A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

Posted: Friday, December 29, 2006 3:31 PM by Jen Brown

By Lt. Colonel Rick Francona

Saddam Hussein’s rule affected virtually everyone in Iraq.  Everyone has a story.  Here’s mine:

In 1995 and 1996, I was involved in the CIA’s covert operations to overthrow Saddam Hussein, operating from several Middle East countries bordering Iraq, as well as inside the Kurdish-controlled area of Iraq itself.  One of these operations was to support of the Iraq National Accord (INA) under Dr. Iyad Alawi.  One of Alawi’s key colleagues was a retired Iraqi military officer, General Muhammad Abdullah Al-Shahwani.  Al-Shawani had relocated outside Iraq, but his three sons were serving in the Iraqi Army Republican Guard.

General Al-Shahwani was in contact with his sons and others in the Iraqi military; together they planned a coup to overthrow Saddam Hussein.  By mid-1996, we believed that a coup had a chance of success.  We began the infiltration of Iraqi agents we had recruited and trained to support the coup attempt.

Unfortunately, one of the agents was detected inside Iraq.  Under severe interrogation, he revealed what information he knew and the whole operation was compromised.  Iraqi security officials arrested virtually everyone involved in the coup attempt; most were executed.

As part of the team working directly with Al-Shahwani, I spent a lot of time at his home.  I was with the general and his wife when word came that their three sons had been arrested.  I was with them when one of their sons was allowed to make a phone call to his mother just prior to his execution.

I told Mrs. Al-Shahwani that someday Saddam would pay for his crimes.  Finally, that day is here.

The United States has evolved from an isolationist society opposed to involvement in foreign conflicts during the early 1900's to one that feels obliged to intervene in conflicts around the globe. The cold war has ended, we know communism is an ideology that doesn't work, and the new enemy is radical Islam. The war on terror will be necessary to fight for many years but we have other battles to be fought at home including a broken health care system, poverty, education and immigration. It makes me angry that my hard-earned tax dollars are paying to build the economies of foreign countries when I can barely afford to live. Also, my son is on his way to serve this country for people who neither understand or appreciate freedom or democracy.
It is about time he will pay for what he did. 26 years of years of killings and mass executions and now he pays? What took us so long?
Yes, his day has arrived. God Bless President Bush.
George W Bush has surpassed Adam and Eve and become Jesus himself on earth. To invade another country without just means and further occupy that country and ultimately place death on that country's elected leader. The free world is not safe when Pontious Pilot is the President of the United States. The country is heading in the wrong direction and racism has expanded in each American's living room.
To rid the world of a tyrant is a desirable thing, but we did not go into Iraq for that purpose. We went in to destroy the weapons of mass destruction. After the death of Saadam, what will our troops have to endure because we are in the wrong war, at the wrong time, and for the wrong reason. Yes, according to the Presidents latest statements the oil in Iraq is still on his mind and of course: "It must not fall into enemy hands or they will be able to blackmail us. Bah Humbug.
On the other hand, regarding the artical by the CIA guy, people that form a coup usually get punished.... I think same would be true in USA.
Saddam would not wait to execute anyone. He has killed anyone in his way.So he should be hanged as soon as possible. George Bush is not going to hang him. His own country is.
Who is going to pay for the deaths of the innocent civilians due to Operation Iraqi Freedom? Colonel, you are a delusional American, and an example of why other people hate us. Saddam was a dictator, but the circumstances in Iraq were far better under his rule than they are today. Anyone involved in your operation must have known the risks involved, unlike the average citizen of Bagdad who is exposed to violence today.
I have no sympathy for Saddam. He is as bas as a person can get. But, I don't even have a grain of trust in Bush and those republicans who give a new reason every day (still changing as we speak) to attack Iraq. The fact is that the social stucture in Iraq is run by religious thugs like Al-Sadr. To govern them and keep the country together, it will always take a bigger thug like Saddam and his brutal tactics. Once he is gone, we are now seeing the fighting that looks like street killings by rival gangs. If given a choice between and a secular but brutal Saddam and crazy religious fanatics like Al-Sadr (who are more brutal than Saddam),I choose the former than latter. Saddam was a lesser threat to world peace than the religious nuts that we are dealing with at this time!!!!
It is not a funny thing, the taking of a life, for any reason. This was a serious man, orignally pumped up by the US and then let lose as his ego began to match his perverse desires to dominate a epole and country. Tyrants need to die, it brings closure for all of us and in my opinion it will help end this war not hurt it or prolong it. Any leader who is like him, should be brought before the world's courts and stage and have pronouncment made and sentence carried out on behalf of mankind. This is for all of us believe it or not. Justice will be at least tipped a little once this man and his major cronies are hanged.
On a personal note, though I shun George Bush and his big bully like attack on a country that had no direct involvement on our great land and beautiful country. I do see the impending execution as a ending of a legacy of hate. Though losing a life is a sad event, there is no mercy greater and no bigger gift that the people of the Iraqi nation need more than the closing of this chapter of their many years of torment and torture. I think the United States should not have abused the rights of fighting men and women and let nature take its course and end this tyrany of the wrath this person who deserves no name shall eventually get. We could have trained the citizens to form their own democracy and Bush being the pompous war monger that he is should have found another scapegoat but alas we are not able to turn the hands of time and his ignorance that also lead the to the death of many of our brave men and women who died for a cause not of our own, Bush will have the saddest legacy of a president and I am sure his ego will keep uttering the words of Hussien, like he did us a great favor even when NATO said there was nothing. Well maybe they had a 9 volt battery and to Bush thats cause enough to send our troops to die and this is something that bush should keep in his mind, Saddam killed millions and Bush's hands bleed red as well so he is not innocent himself. Sadly apointed by fixed ballots this was done and time can not fix the ills of both these men and history books will not allow us to forget either one of these men. I agree with the punishment and execution of Hussien and I also agree that Bush should be charged with crimes of Human Morality as he has none. His memoir should consist of an apology to all those brave lives he caused the loss of.
I do have a problem with some that think that Saddam was really elected to office. I am very glad that people in the United States have the freedom to condem the United States and have the concept that anything that the United States does is wrong and we are the aggressors and all that we do is take. And I have the freedom to think that they are idiots and I wish that they could have lived under Saddam and his sons. Saddam recieved a trial that was more fair and just than any that was given to his victims. Saddam should be put to death on live television for the whole of Iraq to watch if they so choose.
It's the right that, as leaders in the world, the United States responds to the world around us by "leading" the world to holding criminal and renigade political leaders accountable and responsible for their actions against humanity and their hunger for power that over-shadows their responsibility to the global community within which they live. I agree with that - I agree that he should be held accountable in a humane and just way. WE in the US need to have a collective discussion -a serious one - about what we expect our role to be in the US in light of the Iraqi war. We need to decide what we have as resources when a country behaves as Iraq. Everyone in the global community needs to carve out what we expect our future to be and then uphold it. I'm a democrat but I'm dissappointed in the democrats for highly criticizing the war but not offering an alternative to the sanctions. The sanctions weren't working and hadn't worked for over a decade. He was aloud to run amuck and, in essence, thumb their nose at the US and others. What are we to do? We can't let a renegade national leader jeopardize the world economy by jeopardizing the oil fields and reserves nor can we let a national leader hold us hostage with them. Second to that, we cannot let a national leader cull out a race, or a religion, or any other faction and deem them "expendible" resulting in mass genocide. I hear people say that we can't have a messianic view of our place in the world but neither can we stand by and let atrocities against humanity go unaddressed. Perhaps Saddam's execution will provide some healing to the Iraqi people. Perhaps the healing will help them get past enough of the anger, pain, and hate so that they can possibly move forward in a more cooperative way to carve out a better nation for them all and their future. God willing.
A member of the military was planning a coup, and he was caught and executed, and for that you think Hussein deserves to die? Wouldn't most countries that have capital punnishment feel it is proper to execute a member of the military who plots a coup? Hussein is guilty of a lot of terrible things - but I fail to see how execution of someone who was planning a military coup is such an unsepakable crime.
Saddam is nearing his end. Throughout his career(if you can call it that), he was supported by the United States and the West. Especially in dealings against Iran (who has the poor taste to hold Americans hostage). He was a brutal person who interpreted the the intentions of the Americans correctly. We declared those interpretations wrong after the fact. I guess he outlived his usefulness. Goodbye Saddam.
Killing Saddam will solve nothing and will only make him a martyr to the Sunnis. How can we be expected to point the way to a new moral order when we are engaging in the same brutality he practiced? Murder is murder. There is no distinction between methods or reasons. I understand the need for retribution and closure for criminal acts is strong, but statements wishing for another human's death really do not strike me as any different than those from al-Qaeda. It's necessary for humanity to strive toward enlightenment. You may dismiss that as unrealistic but we will never survive the next century believing violence and killing is justified in any circumstance. That is oldthink.
A short drop for man,a healing for mankind..
YOU KNOW . MAY BE IM WRONG FOR SAYING THIS BUT WHAT USE WILL IT PROVE TO SEND HIM TO HIS DEATH,...NOTHING AT ALL. THY SHALL NOT KILL. AND CAUSE HE DID THINGS NOW WE AS A COUNTRY ARE GOING AGINST THE MANY RULEINGS CALLED THE TEN COMMANDMENTS..... STILL IN THE USA WE ARE KILLING EACH EVERY DAY. AND ITS ALL WAYS BLACK ON BLACK OR WHITE VS. WHITE. MAKES NO DIFFRENCE AT ALL. ITS ALL A POWER STRUGGLE IN THIS WORLD . AND LADY LIBERTY HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN THE MIDDLE OF IT ALL!
Execution is far too good for Saddam, why not let him live in jail. Not having any comforts, minimal food and having no idea what is happening in the outside world. At least this way he will not die a martyr as his followers believe he will. executing this man will only bring more bloodshed for innocent people. Upheavel in Iraq is inevitable if he dies.
Saddam's hanging is too good for him. He should be given to the families of the people he caused to be tortured and killed without reason. Good for President Bush for getting Saddam!
Saddam's execution is a bittersweet end to all that has gone on in Iraq as well as what is currently going on in Iraq; the daily slaughter of the Iraqi people at the hands of those who want to control and the daily sacrifice of life from our American young. At this point in time, his execution will serve no useful purpose whatsoever. I say let him live in prison isolation for the rest of his days.
what purpose does it do to put him to death and make a martyre out of him. that only glorifies his followers. the best deed would be to imprison him for life. enough rightousness already. bring the troops home, turn it over to the saudis, let them impose rule for those people who are jsut as happy living in rock hubbles as to walls and floors.
I cannot, for the life of me,understand how anyone can take up cudgels on behalf of Saddam. No one but no one denies that he is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people. That,s it.Period. He is paying for his sins.
Seems to me that Saddam was necessary to run that country of nut cases. Seems as well he invaded Iran because he thought we wanted him to. Hindsight bein' golden, we are NOT capable of doing what seemed natural for him, dealing with the Iraqi mentality. We have no business executing the legal head of state there. Perhaps we would show better sense by just giving HIS country back to him. We'll never be able to run it, but then, this seems to be the goal of our current administration. As long as these poor people are self indulgently doing what muslims are so very good at, killing and murdering, it will remain a no-man's land. A perfect scenario for the oil crowd.
As some of you praise Bush, why dont you go out and find a family that lost a loved one fighting his war...NOT our's....Then hail to Bush..December we lost many and 3000 lifes lost so far is not a reason to praise him and its not a reason to praise Bush for the 10's of thousands of lost Iraqi lives that he caused...sad when you people cant open your eyes and see the blood at your footstep...
god bless america! saddaam's time has finally come to meet his maker.god bless the world -let's ensure that it becomes a better place for all.
The US may have helped him and sided with him against Iran in the '80s, but when he became a problem to us, as well as his own people, then it was our duty to fix the problem. Leftists apparently don't think problems should be fixed.
I find some of the things stated here to be pretty interesting. and want to say that, 1) President Bush is not to blame for Saddam's execution, The county of Iraq is. We could learn alot from other countries policies. maybe we wouldnt have the problems we have in our own back yard if we did. so lets all applaude the Iraqi government when the execution does happen. do you think he cared when he killed so many people. 2) someone stated that racism is in everyones living room! well racism goes both ways and it wouldnt be in everyone's living room if it wasnt brought up everytime something happens. Maybe if people didnt use the excuse all the time it wouoldnt be that way. Way to go President Bush. I support you and all the troops over there.
Colonel, what's your point? In the United States, treason is punishable by death too . Severe interogation? Now that sounds familiar don't it . Oh they never were tried for the crimes they were accused of, you say? Ask someone in US custody in Cuba or the other secret prisons across the world. When will we learn that the US does not have a very good track record when it comes to regime changes or who we support? Back in the late 80's Bid Laden was actively sponsored by the CIA in his fight against Russia's occupation of Afghanistan. Were you in the CIA then? Anyway, should Hussien die for his crimes? yes he's probably getting what he deserves. But here in the US, we don't have the moral highground.
I am so sick over everyones comments regarding how we (the united states) are the ones that are executing Saddam...he is back in Iraq!! His own country is hanging him, not us. Thy shall not kill, you are right, if you live in America, but he is not a practicing Christian obviously, he does not play by the same rules we do. He deserves to die. No I do not believe he should be put in prison for the rest of his life and let that country that he hurt so bad support him, he does not deserve it. While I am saddened by the soldiers that have been killed, they die with the greatest honor. PROTECTING us. You , your children, your parents. You have to understand that the "news" only airs the bad points of this war, but never the good points of the war. For example, our soldiers handing out school supplies to little girls, that previously were not given the same opportunities as boys. The villages that our soldiers are helping rebuild, the economy that has been boosted. If you are going to criticize the war, you must look at all aspects of the war. It is not fair to judge if you only have half of the information, it just shows ingorance. God Bless America, and rot in hell Saddam.
I suppose we should all be sorry the colonel and his group "failed" in their mission in the mid 90's. The reality seems to be that a solution in Iraq is a long term project. I suspect at least a good part of the "solution" is to promote some sort of willing co-existence between the various religious sects. I have a son who is on a Green Beret team and was off to Afghanistan two weeks after the 9-11 attacks and has served two tours in Iraq. His team may be scheduled to return in the fall of '07 and I am very ambivalent about the effectiveness of that effort. He has told of times when (on the first tour in early '03) his team would go into a school and observed educational materials for elementary aged children advocating the extermination of Jews and Americans. Undoing that sort of indoctrination is a generation away. One of the current difficulities is that where the extremists are concerned, at the end of the day "they" wish you dead simply because you belong to the "wrong" sect. I have to believe this is such a perversion of Islamic faith but that is the current reality. We should also keep in mind (and counters an earlier message) that people are NOT worse off today than under Saddam. In a majority of the country children are in schools where they were not before; roads, bridges and hospitals are functioning which were not before and people are not living under the constant threat of being murdered as they were before. Those positives are a by-product of the work of our military forces and that does not get the play in the mainstream media it should. I apologize for rambling but I have a personal stake in this matter. The republicans have done a poor job of articulating the objective and if the leadership has the courage to admit whether "the objective" can be accomplished or not, I hope they have the courage to save our men and women in the military from symbolic sacrifices.
Death at the hands of anyone, except in self-defense, is wrong by any stretch of the imagination. An eye for an eye has never and will never solve anything. We have no business there and the soldiers know it. They don't even want to be there. Crimes occur due to greed, arrogance or some other ridiculous reason. The (supposedly) richest and smartest nation on earth and we still bask in the love of violence. Pity Saddam? Nah, pity the US for its stupidity that will now rain down on the kids sent into Iraq to defend them and rid them of WMD.
JUDGE NOT THAT YE BE NOT JUDGED even though saddam was a dictator and ran his country for 25 years with a threatening and summary judgment hand its condition now is far worse than it was either under the baath or the king fasil or the british or the ossman pashas or the babylonians orthe assyrians or the raiding turks from central asia. saddam is a child of ww 2 born in 37 like myself our earlies memories were of violence swift executions starving peasants homeless children like ourselves piles of black rubble and massive fire power from ack ack guns and diving planes. in a world remembered as everything black and gray there was no white no color peace was not a part of saddams formative years his hero stalin was and uncle joe killed more innocents than either hitler or the ss or the chinese purges or i believe even trumans decision to drop the bomb. as christ said let him that be without sin cast the first stone. jd
he got what is comming to him after killing all them people but i think it is wrong to kill him on eid
Let's all be a bit honest with ourselves, and admit that we cannot rule Iraq, and nothing but a brutal being can! Saddam Hussein served a purpose both for us and his own country. We can clearly observe, since our occupation in 2003, the country has been turned into a Banana Republic, in which chaos is now the daily norm. Yes, he was brutal, but that is what was needed in such a country in which religious zealots are nuttier than the brutal leaders. WE, the US of A, trained him and put him in power, and overzealous nutters within our own government decided to play Rulers and Gods over Iraq. As a Republican, I have been shocked and amazed over our failures to see the massacre that will now ensue in that poor Banana Republic, if Saddam Hussein is executed. God save us all, for after his execution true chaos will reign in that entire region.
The right to live....the right to free speech....the right to practice whatever religion you wish...the right to do so many things here in our grand country that so many others are not afforded the right to do. A woman in the US...the right to tell her husband "I don't think so"....and if he hits her, the right to press charges and throw his butt in jail. A luxury the woman in Iraq did not have under Saddam's rule. A woman is an equal citizen in the US and not 2nd class like she used to be in Iraq. A man...the right to support his beliefs without fear of having his right hand amputated and tattooed on his head for having an opinion, contaray to a leaders thought. A sentenced many Iraqi man suffered for not having the same beliefs of his leader...a luxury many men exercise on a daily basis. A little girl...dreaming of being a doctor and having a family some day....the dream of every little girl in the US. The dream of finally being able to go to school and getting an education...now a reality for little girls in Iraq. When you think about Saddam being an elected official...Hmmm a Dictator who caused so much pain, agony, tourment, disaray, etc..Do you really think that so many people really wanted to vote for him or was it fear of loss of life that swayed their decision. You will be surprised what people will do to stay alive. Think about what Saddam did before he became dictator...He tortured people, some guilty but the majority of them....innocent people who did not agree with Saddam's Regiem. I am a firm believer that we should not kill people out of malice, however a death sentence, to me, is not malice. (God I love my first amendment right) It is a Government's way of punishing those who commited a crime. For those who quote the beautiful words of the Bible...remember how people were punished back in the time when Jesus walked the earth...stoning. I am not saying that every single crime should be punished by death...on the contaray. However, I do believe that for the crimes that Saddam and his Regiem have inflicted upon the people in the counrty of Iraq deserve nothing less. I realize many lives of our brave men and women have been lost. As a daughter and granddaughter of a Sailor and wife of a Marine, I understand the sacrifice's they are making....not just for their families but for your's and mine as well. They do it without THOUGHT, without COMPLAINT and with every ounce of HONOR, VALOUR, COURAGE, and STRENGTH they possess. I am so proud to say to all those American Soldiers and their families that: I appreciate everything you have done and will continue to do for me and my family. Everyday I say a prayer for their families because with out brave men and women such as them the freedoms, we so cherish everyday, would cease to exist. For instance, the ability for me to sit here and type this opinion statement..under Saddam's rule I probably wouldn't have it posted for 5 minutes before I was tried, convicted and executed.
Saddam's death is no loss and good riddance. However it should have occurred totally at the hands of his people with NO help from the US. Iraq was not a threat to us. In fact Saddam’s Iraq was a counter balance to Iran and so served our purpose. We armed Saddam for years and treated him as an ally. The Iraqi people know this and know that while he was our friend we were complicit in his crimes and looked the other way while he killed innocent Iraqis. They have also seen the pictures of American officials including Rumsfeld shaking his hand and being his buddy. Makes me wanna puke. No, this is no revolutionary victory of an oppressed people. This is a puppet government of an occupying power carrying out a mutually gratifying task. If the Iraqis had been allowed to hit bottom and have a real revolution of their own then there would be some legitimacy. That legitimacy may not emerge until after they have their civil war. Unless we intend to do that for them as well. Meanwhile Bin Laden, the real enemy, sits safe in Pakistan (our great ally in the War on Terror, Ha!) and prepares to celebrate the death of his enemy Saddam. Saddam's regime, in fact, was precisely the kind of secular Arab government bin Laden abhorred. Oh well, ya kill one, ya give aid and comfort to the other. So it goes. BRING THEM HOME!
So, the world loses another leader that believed in mafia rule( despose of the competitor ). It is a good thing all of us live in the United States or a free country that believes in the right to live life peacefully with limited Harrassment. Saddams rule forced his countrymen to believe that women are not to go out in public or better yet no rights to vote as men do, just to name a few. Saddams rule incarcerated individuals to force involvement in Iraqs armed services which was evident when large military units surrendered wihtout weapons being fired. The United States of America had its own revolution and civil war for some of the same reasons We are liberating the Iragi people. Thank God Some strong leaders of other countries and their soldiers came to our forefathers aid. Where would the world be ? And it is time the Iraqi people stand on their own feet and defend for themselves the rights that they desire in their own hearts. President Bush secure Iraq for its people and bring our boys back quickly. Saddam will have his day with God, his people will see to it.
So, it's out in the open now for all to read; we were messing around (AGAIN) in another country trying to overthrow their government and set up one that we liked better. Hip hip hurray!!! Well, it sure took us a long time to get Saddam out, didn't it? As someone once said, I say to this administration: "Now look at the mess you've made, Ollie!"
Time will tell once again how we as Americans did. WE were not the ones killing our own people as Saddam was. Hope he knows/knew the real God....
What has happened to forgiven. I know he did bad things but he who is not gility, cast the first stone. I'm praying for you Mr. Saddam.
Nobody stops to think back when Saddam threatened then President Bush (not Geo.W) The invasion of Iraq is a personel vendetta, set out at any cost of lives or money by our now delusional President Bush. This whole invasion was to prove a point to Saddam, you will not get away with threatening my father. There will never be an apology from President Bush for the lives lost in Iraq. I watched President Bush all through his years in Texas and it's true what they say, "He's got the hat but he don't have any cattle"
I am from Grenada and America had an intervention into my country in October 1983. They certainly brought freedom to a people that was definitely in need. My whole country was made to remain indoors 24hours a day and all that. We were threatened to be shot on site if in disobedience. If the people of Iraqi was going through the same then i say that Saddam is getting his due otherwise i think his life can be speared.
Though I do support capital punishment, I would hate to be the one to pull the pin on the gallows, if even I could. Horrible crimes were committed and will continue to be lest we love each other as we love ourselves. Lord God bring our troops home safe and sound.
Unfortunately, it won't be remembered as the judgment of the Iraqi people.
seems GWB is getting xtra christmas gift this year
George Bush Jr. does try to do entirely too much. He is a renegade - not an appropriate president for the U.S. country.
Violence in any form - and whether directed at a group, culture, nation or individual - always results in more violence. Brace yourselves...
no more death.... when and where does it end
no more death.... when and where does it end
