A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

Posted: Friday, December 29, 2006 3:31 PM by Jen Brown

By Lt. Colonel Rick Francona

Saddam Hussein’s rule affected virtually everyone in Iraq.  Everyone has a story.  Here’s mine:

In 1995 and 1996, I was involved in the CIA’s covert operations to overthrow Saddam Hussein, operating from several Middle East countries bordering Iraq, as well as inside the Kurdish-controlled area of Iraq itself.  One of these operations was to support of the Iraq National Accord (INA) under Dr. Iyad Alawi.  One of Alawi’s key colleagues was a retired Iraqi military officer, General Muhammad Abdullah Al-Shahwani.  Al-Shawani had relocated outside Iraq, but his three sons were serving in the Iraqi Army Republican Guard.

General Al-Shahwani was in contact with his sons and others in the Iraqi military; together they planned a coup to overthrow Saddam Hussein.  By mid-1996, we believed that a coup had a chance of success.  We began the infiltration of Iraqi agents we had recruited and trained to support the coup attempt.

Unfortunately, one of the agents was detected inside Iraq.  Under severe interrogation, he revealed what information he knew and the whole operation was compromised.  Iraqi security officials arrested virtually everyone involved in the coup attempt; most were executed.

As part of the team working directly with Al-Shahwani, I spent a lot of time at his home.  I was with the general and his wife when word came that their three sons had been arrested.  I was with them when one of their sons was allowed to make a phone call to his mother just prior to his execution.

I told Mrs. Al-Shahwani that someday Saddam would pay for his crimes.  Finally, that day is here.

Just more proof that might is right. So you hang Saddam. One less dictator and it will not change a single thing. Not one iota. G. W. Bush is responsible for more Iraqi deaths behind a pack of lies about weapons of mass destruction just so his financial backers can make trillions of dollars off of this war and stealing Iraqi Oil than Saddam ever was. Wonder if he should be on trial for his life? Now I suppose this squeaky clean moderate republican 60 year old will be taken away for making threats against our Neo Nazi president? Would probably not suprise me.
To execute a person when his people can no longer tolerate his existance is not wrong. To kill to save lives is right. Pres Truman OK'd the A-bombs to save lives(Mine was one of them). Many Japanese lived because a military invasion was avoided. ADW, 1st Cavalry, WWII
WOW! I hope all the Dictators of the world take note. Saddam should now be the poster boy for how not to succeed as a Dictator. He was (hopefully he has been hanged by now) brazen and proud of his leadership. What? He was one of the most brutal Dictators in history. Hopefully the last of his kind. Yes, death is the only way for him. It's one of the things he was best at so let it be. Bless all our men and women trying so hard to help and make a difference in this world.
Only history can judge the courage of President George W. Bush to cast the stones that could result in the last years of true freedom and peace we will ever know.If our next president does not have his courage, who knows what hordes will be set free to overrun our beloved homeland.
Deep down everyone in this country knew we had to "remove" a "EVIL" being that he is and soon to be was. This world will be a better place the very second he drops down and swings. Iraq has alot of changing to do and alot of growing to do but will be better for it.
saddam was not tried, convicted or sentenced by the united states, or any citizen of it. This country does not control any portion of their legal system. From what I saw, saddam got the fairest trial possible, considering all the circumstances. Our military made his trial possible by capturing him. I can assure you "Bush Haters", had saddam been brought to trial in the united states, he wouldn't be dying tomorrow, unless another inmate got to him first.
unleash him send him into the mountains of ahfaganistian and pakistan .watch him lead us to bin laden .he is only good for bait.we want the suffering to stop for iraq;is and us and canadian troops .send him free and watch him.
the second i hear that that monster has been HUNG i am going to have a party and celebrate.
Saddam will die, and so will more of our soldiers due to the increase of violence because of his death. War in Iraq won't end now that's for sure. That's why Bush had more troops being sent over there from the 82nd Airborne. He knew that there would be chaos to pay if Saddam became a martyr. Pray for the troops, they are going to need it. And pray for their families for comfort when some of them do not come home.
As a Sunni Muslim I don't support criminals no matter what their intensions are. After all a criminal is a criminal. Islam is such a misunderstood religion because of the Saddam and the Osamas of the world. And sure the reality of all this is because of our wonderful government who had these people on their payroll and when they turned against us then it was time to take them out. That is why I hate politics. We all come to this world without any sins and we all have the right to leave without any sins. The people who don't see this will be punished here on earth and the here after. Islam to some seems curel but it is justice for one's sins. We are not God so yes we are not suppose to judge but we are suppose to punish individuals if they have been found guilty of their sins. It is Islamic law and the Islamic countries have to follow that law. So it is not curel it is the rights given to them. We one is not punished then someone else will become a murderer and a thief if they know they won't be punished for their crimes. To me Saddam is not a martyr but a murderer of people and Islam - if he was a true Muslim and if he had only practiced to be a true Muslim he wouldn't be getting his earthly punishment right now. As for the outcome of what happens after his death in Iraq - I pray to Allash for peace for every humanity and religions in this world. We are here for only a short time and shouldn't be made shorter because someone wants to fill their pockets with gold and will do anything to get it but they are only going to leave behind when they die!!!
I totally believe that Suddam Hussein is getting what he rightfully deserves. And it is his own country that is giving it to him. However, I also totally disagree with the war in Iraq! Those people will never know peace in their nation, no matter how hard we try. Our troops need to be pulled out of Iraq and brought home. Then, let the people of Iraq kill each other, or whatever they want to do. They don't want us there, and most of us (U.S.) don't want us there. Give them what they want!
as i sit here in my home reading these comments i cant help thinking that i have missed something. yes we used Saddam at a time when it was for the good of our country against a country that had taken our people hostage and held them for a long time,a country that had been taken over by radical islamists. war and global protection of our interests sometimes make for strange bedfellows. but when Saddam went too far we withdrew our support and went our separate ways. have we all forgotten the open contempt for any diplomatic solutions that Saddam displayed before we went to war. he himself brought this upon himself and his people.he has only been tried on one shamaful and inhumane act, ask the kurds who we abbandoned after the gulf war, or the survivors of the gas attacks if Saddam should die. Saddam will burn in hell with the other tyrants that have preceded him, if he is guilty of all that he is accused, i have no personal knowledge of these attrocities but a jury ofhis peers have convicted him so let justice be and may GOD have mercy on his soul and show mercy to us all in this time of suffering and sorrow
It seems ironic that a supposedly lawfully elected president who invaded a foreign country, held people without benefit of legal counsel or trial, operated above the law without regard for the wishes of his people, and used his nation's army to further his own personal agenda, has now been executed by a supposedly lawfully elected president who invaded a foreign country, held people without benefit of legal counsel or trial, who operated above the law without regard for the wishes of his people, by using his nation's army to further his own personal agenda. Isn't this a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black?
Saddam is a despicable person and hanging was really too good for him. Now lets move on to getting our troops out of Iraq and letting them fix their own country. Don't waste any more US lives in Iraq.
Bush should follow Saddam to the gallows. What about the tens of thousands of lives that have been lost ? Isn't Bush responsible for that due to his personal vendetta against Saddam. Now that Saddam is dead, maybe we can bring our boys home because Bush got what he wanted, and what we really went to war for.
Saddam can't get to Hell fast enough.
Though Saddam was tried for the killings of innocent people for which he should be held accountable, it is wrong to sentence him to death because he was arrested under false pretences. He should be sentenced to life in prison so he too can feel the pain that he has cause others and suffer alone. I do not feel that proper justice was upheld in this case.
I wonder if Saddam and Hitler are drinking tea right about now?
There is an old saying = you live by the sword, you die by the sword.Saddam was a sadistic, cruel man who had no feeling for his fellow man. He tortured and murdered thousands of innocent men, women and children at his personal whim and people are questioning the death sentence imposed on this animal? He was tried by his own countrymen, tried by a court from his own country, and was convicted by his own countrymen - is this not democracy at work?
Husseins rule was based on his pride, not his people. His people judged and executed him. Don't blame Bush for doing something; blame Clinton for doing nothing. Democracy comes with a steep price. Osama will be next.
I think hanging Saddam was to good for him. I would have done just what he didn't want to do. Left him prison and let him rot.He is a murderer and much more. They should have roasted him and peeled his skin off of him while he was alive. Do the worse to him they could. He deserved to suffer the worse fate ever as all murderers, rapist and child melesters should be.
I think that well the world is gonna be under great relief of the saddam execution. We must not forget that he was a powerful man and that don't be fooled I'm sure he has people out there that are trianed just like he was and it will go on for a life time.. This is just the beginning of a new chapter and saddam will be a legend till the end of time whenever that is.
I think that was a cruel (person) but only Good can to judge, and i want that Irak can to star again with yours dreams and yours goals, the best for this strong people
I will not pity a brutal man being EXECUTED. He is not being murdered but EXECUTED!! He had a trial and was found guilty. Could we please spend at least a little of our energy supporting our troops and our president. It's so easy to be an arm chair quarterback after the tough decisions are made. SUPPORT OUR TROOPS,PRESIDENT and our AMAZING COUNTRY!
You gotta love the way they do things over there. You're tried and if convicted, you don't receive years and years of appeals. You're executed! Capital punishment was made with monsters like Saddam Hussein in mind.
well...saddam is dead. he was a bad person and he slaughtered many people. those people all had to have a family. now if your brother or sister, mother father...whatever were ripped away from you and were brutally murdered, what you want to happen??? iono about you but i would surely want that person who took someone, that vital to my existance, away from me(forever) and not to mention made them suffer, i would defintely want him to die. ok that my point homie..peace and love...( this is all coming from a 16 yr old- i know good for me!)
I personally don't believe his execution will solve anything in the region, but, as our stated intention is to have a self-ruling Iraq, we must respect their laws and judgment in the matter. It is their decision to execute Saddam, not ours. We turned him over to their ruling authority, to carry out a sentence their court set. That being said, I personally believe that until their civil war is settled, (don't be fooled, they are definately having an undeclared civil war), we will accomplish next to nothing in the region. You simply cannot try to deal with three seperate factions, who happen to despise each other, whom are all convinced that they are right and everyone else is wrong, and are willing to kill and die for their beliefs, vieing for the top spot. Until they hash it out amongst themselves, there is absolutely no possible way there can be a peaceful co-existance between the Sunnis, the Shiites, and the Kurds. They have been slaughtering each other since Biblical times, and just because the liberals among us are wringing their hands and saying they should play nice, it ain't gonna happen. And, obviously, you can't force them to play nice by pointing a weapon at them, because they they seem to have the nasty habit of shooting back.
The religoius sects have fought for years and will continue to fight amonst themselves, though I have supported Bush for his stand against Huessain it might be time to vacate Iraq and leave the fighting to them, only they can retore peace, rebuild the country and lead their people
Thank you Gary Dulany, well said.
Today is a day of justice and injustice. As much as I am happy for the justice, I am saddened by the position that United States has taken in forcing its views and way of life unto cultures existed hundreds of years before United States formed its culture. Victor Gill, a fellow commentator on this page has put it perfectly logical. People of our nation were mislead in the name of so called "democracy for Iraq" by the Bush administration. Who is Bush to want to change the way of life for Iraqis? If Iraqis wanted a change of lifestyle, believe me, they would have found a way. If they really wanted it!!!!! Yesterday, a man and his 3 year old nephew was hit and killed by a truck only because some cars stopped while the light was green to give them a chance to cross the street while the truck just followed the lights signal to go and did not realize they were crossing the street. If Bush thinks he is the great saviour of Iraqis, he needs to think again. He killed more than 3000 sons and daughters of this great nation of ours and he killed many more than that Iraqi civilians. To Bush and his family, close and distant, I hope that you will always remember with shame what you have done to further your own agendas not related to the people of this great nation of ours nor to the people of Iraq. I am appealing to you, PLEASE NEVER EVER ELECT ANOTHER BUSH OR ITS DESCENDANT INTO ANY OFFICE if you care about our GREAT NATION!!!!
The US people and US Government did not put Saddam to death. The people of Iraq did. "We" didn't hang him, the people of Iraq did. I get a real kick out of some of the "tree huggers" that have replied thus far. Know the facts first.
The men who tried to overthrow Saddam knew what would happen to them if they were captured, and for that very reason they chose to attempt the coup. If an American attempted a coup, they would have a fair trial and a host of free lawyers, and would likely get a few years in prison. It is likely that all of the men in the coup attempt who were captured were summarily executed without a trial. Their families almost certainly also recieved some sort of punishment. It is that same sort of blanket punishment that was the crime that Saddam was tried and executed for. Perhaps with his exit from the world stage of affairs, we can begin to prosecute the rest of the war on the radicals and mass murderers.
Thou shalt not kill, ...unless you tick off the rule makers and power mongers. Then you can rationalize your "absolute" belief system, wash away your "sins" by redefining them and condemn those who believe differently than we do. It is very hard to be tolerant of intolerant religions. Let's support some more government sanctioned killings and show the world how our democracy "forgives those who trespass against us." We are such hypocrites!!
I am glad to see that saddam is getting what he deserves. He's killed thousands of inncent people. I am glad, that we are fighting terriost in thier backyard, instead of in are's.I wish the rules of inqaugement where different though. We have the best men and women soilder's,in the world. With the best weapons, and delivery equipment in the world. I vote we get rid of the camera's, and reporters over in Iraq. They just report on the negtives of the war. And let are world's finest AMERICAN SOLIDERS "Kick some BUTT", and do their jobs, like they are trained to do.And win and end this war in a few days. Instead of just been able to fight with 1 arm tighted behind their backs. And give the citizens of Iraq that desire peace, and to have a democratic government a opportunity to do so. We need a freind in this part of the world promotting peace. Not some towelhead, commy, religous zealant brain washing young children to hate Jews, and Americans. I am tired of the LA gangbanging style of war going on over their, let the soilders do their jobs, with full quick force. Then call out the B-52. And let them end the war quickly. And let us as American citizens be apriecative of all are American soilders fighting to keep peace for us, so where ever we are, we can lay our heads down at night in peace.Because we know they have are backs. God bless America, and the American Soilders.
Some people here need to look outside the US border for information related to World events. First of all I completely agree that he was a tyrant and needed to be dealt with. The Bush family decided to go after him. NOT the US. NOT the UN. Not the International community! How stupid was this decision to allow him to be tried by an IRAQI Court? Was he defeated by the Iraqi's? NO! He was defeated by the Bush family! Which by the way if George Bush Sr. had any balls the more than 2,000 American servicemen and women would NEVER have paid with their lives! He had an opportunity to oust Sadam with little to no bloodshed. Just ask Gen. Schwarzcoff (sp)! It doesn't matter if the people serving on the jury (Judge) are 100% partial. They are an Iraqi court! This will always go down in history as the murder of Sadam by the Bush family! If he had been tried by a TRUE International Court and THEN sentenced to die this would have calmed everything down. Now this just looks like George Bush waved his magic hand and ordered the execution. I honestly believe that many more Americans will lose their lives now because of this stupid decision. This "war" is looking more and more like Vietnam isn't it!
TO THE COL: Obviously your performance was poor because you did not train them well, therefore, you've set them up for failure!!!! What a shame, because you've caused the deaths of many on both sides because of your poor poor performance in training your spies/agents. A lump of coal to you and those who worked with you in training those who were to coup Saddam's regime. Since the Bush have entered the upper politics, Americans found it necessary to hide their nationality abroad in the fear of reprisal from angry foreigners. Good JOB! Thank you for making America the least liked nation in the World(sarcasm if you can understand).
I am simply amazed at some of the comments that have appeared here. Contrary to what has been said, the vast majority of our troops support our efforts in Iraq and believe to pull out now is not the answer. the loss of human life in this war is indeed a sad thing. Our men and women in uniform have sacrificed much and deserve the gratitude of the citizens of the world, but especially the gratitude and respect of the citizens of this great nation. History has shown time and time again that there are some things worth fighting and dying for. Our President has been uup front about the reasons for going into Iraq. Weapons of Mass Destruction was only one of them. He was also up front about the long term commitment that was involved in going into Iraq. For anyone to say that the Iraqis were better off under Saddam than they are now is beyond belief. Whether you think we should have gone to war with Iraq or not is no longer relevent. We are there. Whether or not you think Saddam should be executed is not relevent. He was tried and convicted by an Iraqi court for crimes committed against the Iraqi people. He will be executed according to Iraqi law. It is none of our business. That, under the most difficult of circumstances, the Iraqis were able to conduct this trial and now apparently carry out the verdict is a great victory for them as a nation.
Honestly, these ramblings amuse me to no end! What a quandry is human nature! Thanks to all for posting. Writing history books will never be easy, I see. It is true...Laughter IS the best medicine of all.
it should have been a slow death, but he is now gone thank you America for bringing this man to justice, one time he stoped in my country and they would not let him off his plane, so he never put his feet on our blessed island, and i thank our goverment for doing that. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
I am so thankful to be an American!
There are those in our country who believe we "did right" in going into Iraq and "removing" Saddam - but, from what I've observed lately, those same people don't believe we should go into several African countries where warring factions are in the process of killing one another off. Then, there are those in our country who believe we were wrong to go into Iraq and "remove" Saddam - but those same people seem to believe we should go into those African countries and do what is necessary (i.e., "remove the warlords") to bring to those countries the same opportunities we are now attempting to bring to Iraq. Why is it there doesn't seem to be anyone who believes we should go into both Iraq and the African countries and "rearrange their governments", or anyone who thinks we should not have anything to do with the regimes in either Iraq or those African countries?
While I want to say Ding,Dong-the witch is dead, the wicked witch is dead the sunni Muslim is so right-why must religions fight each other-we have so many similar beliefs yet we find ways to always disparage another's beliefs. We have enough problems to solve in the country & others. May God have mercy on his soul because I can find none in mine.
As a country, we have missed a golden opportunity to prove to the world that we are better than those who hate us. We claim to be a "Christian nation," yet we eagerly clamor for the death of one we once supported when it suited us. The terrible truth is that we are really no different than the Islamic extremists. If we were, we would disengage ourselves from this cycle of death and destruction and truly embrace the message of the one we claim gives us our values. I have been convinced for many years that the Conservative Christian Right is as far away from God and Jesus Christ as anyone on this planet can be. I've always thought that thoe who shout the name of God the loudest, do so because they are the furthest from him. How can we celebrate the life of a gentle President and the hanging of a tyrant at the same time? we can because we do not believe, follow or even attempt to live anything close to the kind of truly loving life that jesus showed us. If there truly is a judgement day, we are in big trouble.
So now that the big bad Dictator is dead and we recovered all the weapons of mass destruction and the wasp nest called the Middle East is completely out of control and more then 6,000 people (including 911)are Dead, not counting all the innocent people in Iraq who die every day, what next? How about we start taking care of our own Bush? What a waste of life just so W could finish what Daddy could not!
As Saddam goes so shall we. for we too have sent 3000 Americans to die for what? I think we killed more Americans and innocent Iraqies than Saddam. Maybe we should re-evaluate our moral standards. Our religous right is just as bad as any Islamic radicals. God forgive the Neo Right.
Colonel, I'm finding your story hard to believe. I apologize. However, Saddam the tyrant allowed some Iraqi boy call his mommy before he's executed? Saddam's death means nothing to Americans. Bin Ladens death will be many times sweeter.
For all those doubting the kind of man Saddam Hussein was and whether the right sentence has been handed to him, I ask you to read Mayada, daughter of Iraq by Jean Sasson. This is a story from a young woman who personally knew this man. I sat terrified while reading this book.I felt the average Iraq's terror and helplessness being under such a dictator. Maybe if you read this, you'll more appreciate the Good Ol' USA and what we are doing in Iraq. Pray for your president that God would give him the wisdom needed to end this war! God Bless America, President Bush and our courageous troops everywhere!
Im ashamed to be an american, and why would I say that? only the ones who have left American soil and visited another country besides Mexico or canada will know what I am talking about, and seeing most of these messages tells me there is not a whole lot! Im constantly defending America because of bush-whacked, how much I hate that Idiotic moron is beyond writing it here. he is starting to look more and more like Alfred E. Newman.
I was planning on putting in my two cents and leaving it at that. HOWEVER, after reading the comment from Butch Champan I felt inclined to put in two more cents worth. First of all, our military is VOLUNTARY. No one is forced to enlist. Those who do realize from the start that they will be placed in harm's way, and possibly even killed. Comparing Bush to Hussein is outrageous. You may disagree with the presidents choices but to compare him to a man who was responsible for some of the most brutal and disgusting acts toward human beings since the start of time is truly shocking. The horror stories I've heard and read concerning this monster, hanging him is much too mild of a way to die. You know Mr. Champan, it would be wonderful to live in a world where everyone is good and loving and peaceful. No wars, no fighting, no mass executions. But we don't. We live in a world where people like Hussein torture and murder human beings for the sport of it. Therefore, we need a military willing to give up there lives to rid the world of evil dictators like Suddam Hussein, and also the type of president willing to risk his reputation by sending them there. No military personel is over seas by force. They volunteered their lives to fight for America wherever and whenever they are needed. To suggest Bush go to the gallows for eliminating a evil, demonic dictator from the face of the earth is sickening. However, you should consider your self blessed for living in a country where you can make such statements with no risk of danger to your self or your family.
Thank you Stan Forron, Gainesville FL, David Wolfanger,Richard Nathan in Burbank, CA. For making an intelligent response. I am concerned that a bunch of world leaders don't hold themselves to the same standards that others are held to. Treason is treason even if an outside group or three lettered agency helps. This by far is the best shell game i have ever seen. Wow
