From the archives: Hilary Rosen on Nancy Pelosi

Posted: Wednesday, January 03, 2007 11:41 PM by Jen Brown

Editor's note: On Oct. 23, Hilary Rosen wrote about Rep. Nancy Pelosi, and the effect she would have on national politics if elected speaker of the House.  Today, with Nancy Pelosi about to make history by becoming the first female speaker, we wanted to post Rosen's thoughts from October our new blog....

By Hilary Rosen on Oct. 23, 2006

No Bush bashing today. I am going to learn from my leader, soon-to-be-Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi. It is time to look forward, not backward.

Much has been written lately about the tough lady leader who has pushed the Democrats into unity over the past year.  But not enough has been written about the heart of the person who will bear a huge responsibility for restoring the optimism of a divided nation.

I’ve known Nancy Pelosi for almost 25 years, since I worked for then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein of San Francisco.  She was a dear friend of Dianne’s and an even closer friend of former Reps. Phil and Sala Burton who she followed into Congress.  Sala took Phil’s seat after he died.  Phil was a thunderous, brilliant lion who, though I learned so much from him, scared me.  Sala was a brave, intuitive woman who treated me like a beloved granddaughter. And though I know she treated many the same way, I worshipped her.  Nancy did too.  No one was a better friend than Nancy to the Burton family when Phil and then Sala were sick.  And when Sala was dying, she anointed Nancy to be her successor.  I was caught between my loyalty to the growing cadre of AIDS activists who wanted openly gay supervisor Harry Britt to win the seat and my loyalty to the Burton machine.  Nancy was very kind and never pressured me.  And when she won, she showed grace and friendship instead of resentment.

She worked hard for the people of San Francisco.  She was as aggressive as any member of Congress to represent the broad array of interests in her district.  But I will never forget her doggedness in those early days of the AIDS crisis when few people were listening, much less using their precious chits with the Appropriations Committee to begin funding critical research and care for people with AIDS.  Since then I have worked with her on issues as diverse as housing, economic development and artist’s rights.  She consistently brings a personal touch and a legislator’s skill to the table.  Those who see her simply as an unwavering liberal have never clashed with her.  She has progressive views for sure but she is practical and hard nosed when a broader coalition of views is needed to win.

I think those who hope or expect Speaker Pelosi to falter under the pressure, or fail to show the strength required of a new speaker when the majority changes hands, are going to be sorely disappointed.

Looking at the way she has campaigned for the past few months on behalf of House Democrats gives the country a glimpse of this formidable leader who will soon be the most powerful elected woman in US history.

She doesn’t waste her time complaining about how things are.  She encourages people to believe that it can be different.  And I dare say I am starting to feel the optimism she exudes.  Not for the election - I’ve been optimistic about the election for a long time.  Rather I am hopeful a balance in the country is about to be righted.  Other perspectives and progressive values will finally see the light of day again.

For those who haven’t heard what Pelosi has been saying about her fist 100 hours in office, here goes:

Day One: Put new rules in place to “break the link between lobbyists and legislation.”  I’ve had my doubts about the merits of spending time on this issue, but given the past year with Jack Abramoff, Tom Delay and the K Street project, a corrupt project developed to enrich republican lobbyists and increase republican campaign contributions; I am convinced that this issue must be addressed.

Day Two: “Enact all the recommendations made by the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.” Doesn’t this seem so obvious?

Time remaining until 100 hours: “Raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour; cut the interest rate on student loans in half; allow the government to negotiate directly with the pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices for Medicare patients; broaden the types of stem cell research allowed with federal funds, etc.”  These are issues that affect people’s lives rather than issues that give red meat to a right wing base.    She committed to  “Pay as you go, meaning no increasing the deficit, whether the issue is middle class tax relief, health care or some other priority.”  I am confident that we will finally be hearing about our lives being discussed on the floor of the House by someone who actually cares about them.

Throughout her time in the House, Nancy Pelosi has been able to connect with the human needs of Members of Congress and mesh them with the political needs of the Democratic caucus.  She jokes about the skills learned herding her family of five kids and an independent minded husband.  What she doesn’t say is how those kids (they aren’t kids anymore) revere their mother – there is no more meaningful personal testament.   So when the Republican attempts at caricaturizing Pelosi as either a dragon lady or a foolish liberal fail, Americans will be left with a woman who will be more than ready to bear the weight of our expectations on her small strong shoulders.

Dear Ms. Hilary Rosen, Very interesting and informative article. Thanks.
You go Nancy!!!!!! I'll be suporting you all the way... It's is time to take our country back from the RIGHT WING-NUTS! Carol Orsini
I seldom comment on these things, but I am filled with hope to know we finally have someone able and willing to fight for the common folks again...reading this brought a tear of relief to my eye .....praying for your continued strength, Nancy
Too Funny! You are praising a woman who does not even believe that we are in a war against terrorism. How does she plan to fight it? She belongs to a party that ITSELF does not believe in what they stand for. Why do you think they call themselves "progressive" (trying to hide from the term "liberal") and why do you think they went out and recruited conservative democrats to run in the mid-term election. This all proves that they still realize that they cannot put forward their true colors, without the majority of America running from them. The GOP did not lose because of Democratic ideas and policies, they lost because they did not live up to their own.
I tell you- we long to -see a better day- We're just waiting for someone to -LEAD THE WAY--- EXCERPTS FROM A SONG by E. R. LeBlanc Congratulations Nancy -From the Heart-ERL
It's about time the Democrats can have a say. This prior congress, guided by the administration, has ignored the Democrats and the entire nation for long enough. Nancy Pelosi will be a breath of fresh air. I hope she lives up to her reputation and her prommises and doesn't play party politics to excess. She'll have to, to a certain degree, and we all know that. We'd be idiots to not admit it. But, the degree that the prior congress and administration has played the game and sacrificed our young men and women in Iraq and recklessly spent millions of dollars we don't have, & ruined our credibility worldwide is shameless and unforgiveable. Anything would be better than that. Of course, Mr Bush is now asking and expecting the Democrats to work with him. I didn't see him doing that at all over the last 6 years, because he didn't have do. There has been no accountability. It's time for the Democrats to stand up and show us what they can do. Go Nancy!!!
What does Nancy Pelosi plan to do about rape in the military? Until women in America's armed forces receive justice for the sexual assaults that are perpetrated upon them by fellow service members there will be no equality for women in the United States. The sexual exploitation of women in the armed forces must stop.
So "they" the democrats got what they wanted!! Yet not one can tell us just what they want!! Very scary that our well being, literally is now in these liberals hands, I shall hold them accountable..
Vincent, is that all you can come up with? Terra-terra-terra! LIBERAL! Much as you dislike her and know nothing about her and other progressives (which stands for people who think progressively on new ways of solving problems), you will witness the actual GOOD she does, when compared to the complete lack of integrity and and concern for the other 99% displayed by the outgoing GOP.
To quote an earlier writer, we're in "a war against terrorism" and we're going to raise the minimum wage? For whom? You mean there are that many people who are impacted by it? Besides teenagers, secondary wage-earners and retirees? "Bi-partisan" = let's discuss and I'm sure you'll see it my way. Let's get ready for investigations and hearings so we can bash someone. I hope I'm wrong.
Maybe we are spending so much of our time and effort fighting the "war against terrorism" that we forgot how to govern the country. Maybe if we did a better job of governing the country we would not need to spend so much time fighting the terrorist. Maybe, just maybe the United States would be admired again. Go Nancy!!!!!
Nancy Pelosi is truly a godsend for Republicans! After America observes her in action as leader of the House for two years, seeing a true liberal in action, the Republicans will take back the Congress and retain the White House in 2008!
Thank God we have finally grown up to elect an intelligent and capable woman to this High Office. Now we need to elect Hilary Clinton as President of the United States of America. Believe me, she would do a much better job that Bush or any other Republican president. It seems to be that Republicans have a tendency to always put our country in massive Debts and Deficits. It is always the Democrats who always leave a Surplus once in Power. Am I the only one that has noticed this? If so, it is time Americans wake up and smell the coffee!! Our great great grandchildren will not be able to pay off this massive debt that President Bush and his Republicans have put our beloved country in. It seems that no one wants to face this issue. Republican presidents always give the Rich a big Tax Break and ignore the Poor and Middle Class. May God help the Democratics to renew the horrible international image this President and his corrupt and inept Republican party has given our country. Our Nation and People need to be united once and for all. It is high time.
Regardless of political party every woman should rejoice in her election to House Speaker. As to having solutions to the problems which have been hanging over us for the past several years...give them time to get started. You may be surprised at what can be accomplished. Now I have hope that will happen. At least it will not be more of the same.
I have so thankful to the Almighty that Americans have realised that Women have as much capability as men or possibly more. Nancy Pelosi will bring back the respect and admiration our beloved country once had. God willing, Hilary Clinton as our New President, will regain the International immage that we once had. President Bush and his Republican did tremendous damage to our image abroad. Thank you Americans for bringing some sense of Unity to our once divided country. Now the Poor and Middle Class will be given a decent opportunity to progress and survive instead of only the Rich. God bless America and its peoples!!!
Please. Nancy Pelosi and her liberal politician friends are the exact reason I moved from Ca. to Texas after 20 years of the gilded state. In Ca. the government has deemed itself the nanny of the planet: No smoking laws even in your own home, Auto registration costs so high to guarantee you use mass transit. Home prices so high only Nancy and her millionare freinds can now afford a home. A near non existant elecrical grid and 20 years without a new power plant being allowed to be built. A huge off shore oil reserve that can't be used because the derrick might be in the way of some leftist movie stars view. Add to that a college system that is so costly and P.C. my kids,WASPS, didn't go but children of and illegal emmegrants[yes I said illegal]get acceptance at discounted tuition. Yep she and the dems. made it a great state and now the show is coming to the rest of America. Injoy what you voted for.
She says, "we must work together", but does not tell us how she plans to do this. She represents an extremely small portion of California, and yet some how she hoodwinked enough folks to get elected. We'll see her true colors come out soon. Raise minimum wages and starve the troops! She will MAKE the world like us. Progressives need to embrace the name liberal and stick with the values. If they do that they will never be a majority again. Liberals realize they cannot call themselves what they realy are or show their true colors. Let's see her tackle the illegal immigration invasion. Mexifornia is here!!!
Why do Republicans just smear for the sake of trying to make lies and myths stick? Nancy will do a great job and is a great politician Even if she is a Liberal. I'm Proud to be a Liberal, I believe in smaller government that's fiscally responsible (this used to be a republican thing, but they blew it), higher taxes for the rich, and more tax brakes for the poor. I am a PRO-Choice, Catholic, middle aged upper middle class white heterosexual husband father/grandfather who lives in the South, and believes in separation of church and state (like our founding fathers, not the current republican versions). Man I'm a republican’s politician nightmare! Oh yeah and same sex marriage - fine by me.
Hey, what a great day! We can take the country back from the right wing nuts, as Ms. Orsini opines, and now we can hand it over to the left wing nuts, led by comrade Pelosi. After all, everything should flow from government, right?
Republicans think we're going to hell in a handbasket, and Democrats think all that's wrong will now be righted. Both are wrong.
Good for you, Paul of Winston-Salem. And to Jerry from Chicago, get out of Chicago and you may see how many people are really affected by the low minimum wage, and they aren't all college students! Here's to the women leading us into a new era, and hopefully an era that is more tolerant and accepting of everyone! How much better the world would be if we were all a bit more tolerant!
Good Luck to Mrs Pelosi. I hope we can get ethics reform. I still think she showed a lack of good judgement by passing over Jane Harman. Time will tell if we can have a bipartisan government or will it be politics as usual.
Lets see what happens, most likely the song will remain the same. We need a 3rd party.
I spent the day on the "Hill" watching the swearing-in ceremonies and visiting some of the newly elected. The greatest inspiration was my new state senator, Jim Webb of Virginia. The man already has formatted a "bill" that would allow veterans (those that served since 911) the same educational benefits given to those who served aftere WWII. This is the same benefits that rebuilt this country after the war.Should all newcomers be as exciting as Senator Webb, we will be in for a very interesting new Congress.
Congrats on a new strong women with the right important values on her plate and in her attention. Who cares what party she belongs to ... we seem to have a genuine hard-working person to help the Americans. And we need the cleansing of corruption of Congress and someone to lead the controlling of the president. Obviously the last congress were filled with weak-kneed, corrupted, greedy, fatcats that couldn't control the wild-eyed president who was hell-bend on destroying so much. I truly hope Nancy can fullfil the great words written about her. The Americans need that badly.
Sadly, the majority of right-leaning writers to this post have done nothing but smear "liberals" and bark at the dark. The author of the original article has pointed out Ms. Pelosi's agenda, her stance, and her values. I wonder how that was overlooked. I guess if you lean right anymore you have to act selfishly and name-call anyone who wants to look out for the less fortunate or end corruption or protect our valuable resources, including our planet. Where's the hope gone? Have we become so polarized by the current political environment that we cannot give someone else the benefit of the doubt and hope for brighter days for all of us?
Before a bill becomes a law it has to go between the house and senate and then maybe a Presidential veto. How much of the postering that the democrats are doing will actually make it into law? Minimum wage was submitted last year and shot down by the dems because it was linked to estate tax. Politics as usual except the other side is now in charge.
wonderful thing happened in our gov. dear ms.H Rosen my grandson has a heavy burden from his college ed. i hope this cut in 1/2 affects his loan. i am happy to see this happen to our democratic government. thank you.
