SOTU: Reactions From Statuary Hall

By Andrew Noyes, National Journal's Beltway Blogroll

Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., On Iraq:

”Either we get out of Iraq or we do what people have been asking for a long time. New leadership and a new strategy. We have new leadership, we have a new strategy. The last thing I think we want is for Congress to micromanage the war. We have one commander in chief.”

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn. On Economy & Immigration:

"I appreciated that the president talked about the economy first—that he brought attention to the issue of spending. This is an administration that has spent too much. I’m concerned that he wants comprehensive immigration reform because I don’t agree with him on that. I think you secure the borders first, then you address your visa issues and your employer issues, but you do it one step at a time.”

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., On Being ‘Underwhelmed:’

"I’m underwhelmed. He didn’t really say anything new. We want some answers. I’m not convinced that he has his arms around [the war]. I left kind of disappointed that we didn’t really hear a president who could convince us that he really was in charge of this war.”

Not a surprising reaction from Blackburn, to all but sidestep the Iraq issue. I remember her laughing about a war-related question Chris Matthews asked her on Hardball a while back. To Chris' credit, he called her on it, noting "it's a war, it's not funny!"
I'm underwhelmed too. For the second straight year, not one word about New Orleans/Katrina. Every day the Watergate disaster and this disaster become more alike.
Does securing our borders mirror the issues in Iraq? Why don't we just do what other countries do with unwanted foreign intruders, make them leave?
Interesting reactions. I don't understand Congressman Shay's reaction? "Either we get out of Iraq or we do what people have been asking for a long time." Isn't that what people have been asking for? To get out of Iraq?
The president was never in control of the war because if he was he would have taken one look at the history of the middle east and realized it would end in civil war, what is happening now. He's taken the issues between the shiet and the sunnis and created a global war between Islam and the rest of the world. He's done exactly what Bin Laden wanted to happen.
Why keep talking about Katrina? When allthe money sent there is only wasted by the people who keep complaining! America has bigger fish to "fry" and we can not keep dwelling on this, for nothing will ever get done.
“He didn’t really say anything new”... yup, I agree. The thing that bothers me is that he said he was going to balance the budget and made no mention of how much the war in Iraq is costing this country. He would have to kill everything in government except the Iraq war in order to balance the budge! He has good speech writers, but let's not forget the last six years. He will twist words and deceive the public. Shame on us if we allow ourselves be fooled again by this man and his handlers. (Karl Rove)
what the hell happened to family values and the social conservatives. Did they get ANYTHING in the entire speech? Abortion, gone. Activist judges, gone. Gay marriage, gone. That's the sleeper shocker of this speech, the utter cleansing of anything that would appeal to the family values crowd. They have truly become the crazy aunt in the attic, to be hidden at all costs.
If you can't take care of your own backyard, you can hardly be expected to take care of the rest of the block that is the world Stephen. That's why Katrina keeps coming up.
I think we need to stop talking about how going into Iraq was a mistake. We're already in there, now we need to make the best of the situation, and try to get out. It's interesting to hear both sides talk about cooperating with each other, I think we've heard both sides use this line before.
SOTU I havn't heard anyone on air mention the 92,000 extra troops Mr. Bush wants. Where does he think he is going to get 92,000 more volunteers for his misguided war, let alone a civilian defense force to volunteer to be put in harms way. I almost thought he was going to ask to have the draft reinstated.
When Bush again morphed sectarian Iraqi's with terrorists, he finished by stating the need to support or troops. Another Karl Rove twist, by making thoughs who didn't stand up and cheer this were against the troops
I think we must move on and try to find a way out the Iraq mess. I think Iraq's destiny is now on how the Iraqis solve their problems. Let's provide them with everything needed to rebuild their nation, but they must take care of their own safety and security, gradually as it may be.
Let's face the facts the President got his war and and he doesn't want to look like a loser in the eyes of his dad and family. The next President will have to get us out of Iraq.
I think the most interesting part of the state of the union speech was when Mr. Cheney popped a pill in his mouth in the background. We watched on tivo and replayed it several times. Could things get any more bazaar?
I agree with Rep. Waters; I was disappointed. All this president seems to know is "stay the course" and continue to escalate a "War of choice". Based on information now on record; he refuses to listen to congress, the Generals in the field; and refuses to listen to the American People. To me his speech was still pure PR Rhetoric, designed to allow him to continue his dangerous escalation of the Iraq War. Also, I forgot -- he is still trying to link 9/11 with Iraq; and pushing more fear & terror illusions; which are attempts at brainwashing the listeners. He is clearly the WORST president in my lifetime. He needs to be impeached.
Bush is the worst president ever. Impeachment is too good for him. He needs to be tried for crimes against humanity. Dick Cheney aka Dr. Death should be forced to share the same prison cell with the little Texas Oil Pimp...
We are classified as one undivided nation, yet congress and politicians are extremely divided. Amusing to me.
