SOTU: Clinton -- 'The jury is out'

Posted: Tuesday, January 23, 2007 11:30 PM by Hardball

CHRIS MATTHEWS, NBC ANCHOR:  We are joined right now by the junior senator from New York, Senator Hillary Clinton.  And she’s, of course, the Democratic candidate—or a Democratic candidate for president.

Senator Clinton, let me ask you about the president tonight.  Do you think he is sincere when he calls for bipartisan action on a number of these issues?

SEN. HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON (D), NEW YORK:  Well, I think the jury is out, Chris.  I’m not quite sure.

We have since years of experience that suggests that that is not their favored means of getting anything done.  But I’m open to it.  And I think all of the Democrats are.  He mentioned a few issues, like energy independence and health care, where we are eager to work towards some kind of bipartisan result.

So, let’s see what happens.  I mean, the proof is in the pudding.  We will see whether his speech tonight is followed up by any specific actions and the kind of outreach that should be undertaken.

MATTHEWS:  Back when you were working so hard on health care, back in the ‘90s, in the early ‘90s...

(LAUGHTER)

MATTHEWS:  ... and—and you really thought you could get a—some

kind of compromise at the end, I believe, and the word came from the ideologues on the right, kill this baby in its bassinet, do not let them get a compromise health care bill that they can get credit for.

Do you still feel the sting of that strategy on the other side?

CLINTON:  You know, I really don’t.

I regret that we have lost all this time, in trying to deal with a problem that affects our economy, that undermines our productivity, and makes us less competitive than we would be otherwise.  So, I think we have really missed the opportunity to take care of the problem that health care financing poses.

But, you know, I’m a realist.  And I get up every today and try to figure out what we are going to get done today to move the ball forward.  So, I’m ready to, you know, work with anybody.  I’m not interested in scoring partisan or ideological points on some imaginary board in the sky.  Let’s try to get something done.

I have too many people I represent right now, Chris, who are struggling because they don’t have health care.  We have got more than 46 million Americans, nine million children.  You know, let’s put down the ideological battleground and once again try to find some common ground.

KEITH OLBERMANN, NBC ANCHOR:  Senator, when we spoke this morning, I asked you what might be said in this speech that would get you to stand up and cheer and applaud for the president.  You mentioned health care.  He discussed health care.

You suggested he should reach out to the Democrats and actually go for genuine bipartisanship.  There were words to that effect.  As you point out, how sincere they are will—will only be told by time.  A real energy policy—there were hints at an energy policy.

But the last point that you made—or the first point you actually made was that he—a changing of the mind on troop escalation would have been the thing that would have easily brought you to your feet.  We did not get that.  Iraq did not come in until well over 3,000 words had been spoken in the speech.

In a—in a backwards kind of way, and in an unexpected kind of way, did the president not spend enough time talking about Iraq tonight?

CLINTON:  Well, actually, Keith, I think he made his whole defense of Iraq, because he started by linking it to the war on terror, which all of us support.  And I have been, you know, adamant that we have to be more effective and smarter in going after the bad guys who are after us.

And he certainly tried to once again summon the Congress and the country to see his version of reality.

I don’t think it’s going to sell.  I think that a majority of Democrats

and a sizable number of Republicans are turning against this policy of escalation, not because we don’t want to fight the war on terror—in fact, we want to fight it smarter and better—but because it is only a slice of a strategy.

Where is the internationalization of this problem, the regional conference, the reaching-out to the neighbors?  Where is the continual pressure on the Iraqi government to deal with the political and economic problems they face?

You know, when I returned from Iraq and Afghanistan a week ago, I said, look, I’m against this troop escalation.  Let’s see if we can’t put some pressure on the Iraqi government to start doing the things all of us know need to be done, in order for there to be some kind of political resolution, since we know there is no military solution.

MATTHEWS:  What do you think, Senator, of the fact that the president has decided to go down to Williamsburg in a week or so and actually join the House Democrats.

(LAUGHTER)

MATTHEWS:  You are laughing.

OK, this is a personal question.  Would you accept an invitation if the

Republicans invited you to their retreat?

CLINTON:  Absolutely, in a New York minute, Chris.  I think it’s a great invitation.  I’m glad the president accepted.

You know, some of these things may be ritualistic.  You know that.  You have been in this town a lot longer than I have.  But I think it also does at least show respect for the process.  We need to get back to working with each other and, you know, pursuing some common means toward getting results for our constituents and our country.

So, I’m glad that the president was invited.  And I’m delighted that he is going.

MATTHEWS:  Do you think you can retail those Republicans into voting for you?

(LAUGHTER)

CLINTON:  Well, I got some of them in New York.  I would like to figure

out if I could get a few more.

MATTHEWS:  I knew you would—hey, by the way, wasn’t that great about Wesley Autrey tonight?  Wasn’t he great?

CLINTON:  I loved it.  We were really thrilled that he was there.  And what a terrific guy he is.  I’m—I’m very proud of him, as a New Yorker.

MATTHEWS:  God, America is proud of the guy.  Humanity is proud of the guy.

CLINTON:  That’s exactly right.

MATTHEWS:  Boy, it’s so great to—great to have you on, Senator.  And

thank you very much, Senator Hillary Clinton of New York.

CLINTON:  Thank you.

If the Democrats (and I am one) want to continue to attack Bush's credibility, they need to find a better mouthpiece than Hillary.
He has the congress where he wants it; at least until the 20,000 additional troops plan plays out. Will our committment to be invested in Iraq 6 months from now change if the government there still can't control the death squads and Al Quada? Probably not in a big way. We're there now and for a long , long time to come--unfortunately.
As they say in Texas, the President was "all foam and no beer". I heard nothing more, except in the area of vague, ominous references to Hizbullah in Lebanon, Shiites in Iran, and Sunni Al-Qaeda in Iraq. I sensed the President was trying to lay the foundation to connect those three dots by a line going through Iran by provoking the Iranian government to react militarily to hostile overtures by the US government. At the end, we all found ourselves where we have found ourselves with this administration for the past 5 years: In trouble. However, one things is for certain: Jim Webb demonstrated to the nation that he is everything that the President is not.
Hillary can't do any worse than what we have right now. I am a Democrate and a proud one at that. I think all us Democrats need to be excited and energized for the 08 race. I personally think a good ticket would be Hillary and Edwards or Hillary and Obama. If Hillary can stick the facts I think she has a good shot. Having a woman for President would be good for this country.
I think that he is sincere when he calls for bipartison action on a number of issues. But is he being realistic? When the Iraq war continues like it does, most of these issues are nice, but not realistic when money continues to flow into a civil war that places are men and women in harm's way.
NOTE: I was not able to post this the first time. Please ignore if you have already received this. I am a Liberal, if not a Democrat necessarily. However, I must say, Mrs. Clinton needs to stand for something and stop playing safe and stiff. She seems to be emerging as a candidate who has all the right moves, and wants to keep everyone happy. By doing so, she runs the danger of being tagged as someone who "knows the price of everything, and value of nothing."
Hillary Clinton just needs to get out of politics. If she DOES end up being President, with the way this administation has emasculated the Bill of Rights, the resulting crusade against her political enemies will make the Night of the Long Knives look like a box social. People will be 'Borked' and 'Vince Fostered' all over the place.
I watch Mrs Clinton state on numerous tv appearances that she would NOT be running for president, and yet here she is!. She voted for the war and yet wants out now. She is a people pleaser and that is it. The last thing that this country needs is another Clinton in the white house. She messed it up the first time she ran the country what makes her think she can get it right this time. Oh that is right it was her husband that sat in the seat but wasn't it her that was running the country while he was playing house with another! God Bless President Bush and God Bless Our Country!
Well, Dick Morris said last night he thinks the Democrats have a 9 out 10 chance of winning the presidency and that Hillary has a 7 out of 10 chance of winning the Democratic nomination. That translates into a 63% chance of Hillary being President. And quite frankly, that number scares the hell out of me.
I have seen a common theme while reading these posts.Hilary Clinton did not run this country, her husband did and did a pretty good job of it.I do not like everything about her,but what is wrong with trying to make people happy,or at least content?Isnt that what we want from our leaders?Do we want them to instead do things that makes us unhappy?God BlessBush indeed...please let him see how he is destroying this country!!!!!
After watching last nights event, I even more excited about the prospect of Hilary Clinton running for President. Of all the women in the world, I cant imagine a better one to take the helm of our nation. Go Hillary!
Hillary is a has-been.
Hillary remains the Dem punching bag du jour. How sad that cheap shots at her pass for substance. Regardless of one's agreement or disagreement with her positions, a woman in government should not be subjected to the personal attacks that Hillary endures. As a woman, I find it disturbing that in the 21st century, America still measures a woman's worth by a different yardstick than a man's.
I do question the troop escalation. Wasn't it not yet even a year ago that we had a troop escalation to over 160,000 and were going to get very tough? Wasn't it not yet a year ago that this escalation failed? Why does he refuse to try any of the suggestions of the Baker Iraq planning Commission? Why is diplomacy such a dirty word to his administration?
Bush has had a lot of cleanup after the Clintons regime. Reestablish that an attack on the U.S. will not be ignored like the the 1st attempt on WTC in the 90s under HILARY &Bill Clinton. As far as Hilary for president how can anyone vote for someone to be in control of the executive branch when she can't even control her own husband. Dems shld put up Monica, definitely a better choice.
My opinion is if you have money, a name, and some advertising, even a moron can be president. George Bush entered a country under false pretenses and has lied to anyone who will listen. The media at first was blaming Al Quida. Then it was insurgents. Now it is sectarian violence. To make it plain, the Middle East does not have democratic governments. Bush invaded a country with no evidence other than a power trip and a ego. The war was over in 3 days! Our military is in the middle of a CIVIL WAR for religious and monetary control of Iraq. I find it odd, we can take an 18 year old kid, train him or her for 6 months and send them to another country to put them in an impossible situation, however we have been hearing for 4 years how we are training an Iraq security, police, and military force to take over. Enough is enough! If you want to put our military to use, then try guarding our own borders. Anybody tired of trying to learn a new language in this country? I will give you sure way out of Iraq, impeach Bush & Chaney as they need to be. Unless you think a private extra marital affair is more important than letting moron run this country.
Give Hillary a chance. Listen to what she has to say. Don't be so quick to judge. Hillary/Webb, Hillary/Obama, Hillary Edwards all excite me. How could anyone not be exciting compared to who we have now. Bush has basically cased a mess that cannot be fixed. Iraq will eventually be ran by Iran. What a horrible horrible mess.
I really wish the media would not show Hillary on the news. Why do they give her so much media coverage? Don't they realize who she is and her past history?
I support our President and his plans 100%! It is so sad and selfish when American's cannot look beyond our country and understand what a global economy means. Reducing the number of troops will prolong the war. Iraq needs trained. Americans are the best to assist with this training. After all we are the land of the free! The regime Iraq has lived under still affects their thinkingand trust. The mindset needs corrected and that requires training. Is it going to take another attack on our country to understand America is hated and targeted? On another note, I'll need to move to Canada if Hillary becomes President! Hillary is an embarrassment to all woman! Cutting funds to Iraq and pulling out does not mean that Iraq will suddenly have the knowledge and training required to effectively run their country and prevent evil! What an embarrassing statement on National TV. Way to go Hillary!
Gee, if Clinton (Bill or Hillary, take your pick) messed things up when he was President, then what exactly has George Junior done while he was in office? What is worse than "messed up"?
In order for someone to get my vote they need to stand up and speak intelligently. After all we enjoy poking fun at President Bush for his stupid mistakes with the english language. Instead, Ms. Clinton is continuing to jump on band wagons. These band wagons appear to be showing our enemies we are a divided country. America is doomed from attacks, and man who will get blamed then...Poor Bush. Have Americans not learned from history that politicians dont mean what they say, the mean what they do? What has Hilary done for us lately, she does have money...what about you? If she is going to be taken seriously she needs to come up with a "real" plan to get us out of Iraq successfully. She needs to stick to in legally also, mandating the president keep troops at the current levels is just ludircious. Congress authorized the war, but can not dictate the armies, only their monies. Shut up and cut funding, that is real...Her statements about pulling out, or withdrawl is not an educated plan. Does any one know what it takes to gracefully bow out of a country? We have fellow Americans who died in that hell hole, and if we dont have a gracefull withdrawl in the face of our enemies, then they died in vain? Unlike prior wars and convflicts we all knew the purpose of the wars. If we leave Iraq, we created a large Jihadist realm. Another grab bag of topics, the Health Plan for America, or should we call any plan dealing with health care, ground hog politics? Meaning the only time we hear about health care is in and around election years. just like the movie, it is the same scene with different actors/actress...give me a break! Congress blames everything on the President, it does takes two to tango - they are all curupt, and I will not vote for a person serving in either office in 2008... I want to give a special thanks to hilary clinton and her husband for running. They finally made a loop hole for allowing multiple years at the white house. We all know, Hilary wore the pants before. (just kidding) thanks,
Over 35 years ago terrorist attacked Federal buildings in Hyattsville, Md. They even attacked the Olympic games. There is a long history of continuing attacks. So now they just kill their own children who are attending weddings in their temples, or when ladies who go shopping. So why does the Congress....preoccupied with self serving purposes( financial, sexual , political) think the terrorist should be left alone? Bash Bush if you must but its the Congess(Dems and GOP)which is broken.
