Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., On Energy:

"He raised the bar even beyond what some folks like us thought was possible. The reality is that we have to end our dependence on foreign oil. It’s a security threat and the president recognizes that. This is very, very good news. Now we have to convert it to reality.”

Rep. Hilda Solis, D-Calif., On Iraq:

"The president would have talked about many of the things he spoke about five years ago. The buildup to the war and the 20,000 troops he’s going to send was new. I know the public is strongly against that and a lot in the Hispanic community are against that notion. I think he needs to do a lot more rethinking and talk to all of us.”

Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., On Sacrifice:

"The speech was flat. It didn’t have a sense of vision or where we’re going as a nation, as a people. He didn’t ask the American people to sacrifice, to give up anything. The only people giving up something are the young men and young women serving in Iraq.”z

A 20% reduction in gasoline consumption over the next 10 years is certainly a doable goal. Great savings could be gained if the nation's trucking company's convert to used vegatable oil(ever seen Mythbusters?) Of course, Bush will be long gone by 2017.
I agree with the flat speech. His tone was flat as well. People are saying "this is his best speech since September 20th 2001." That might be true. However, I don't think it was particularly a good speech. It seemed to be regurgitated positions that I hear so often, along with the "I need to cooperate with the majority, so fine, I'll throw these policies out there to make Dems happy" position. The only part of his speech I liked was in his first couple of lines, the acknowledgment of Nancy Pelosi
Vietnam War Slogan: "Give Peace A Chance" Bush Iraq War Slogan: "Give War A Chance"
Your correspondant analysing both Bush and Webb's speach, (Matthews referred to him as one with the scalpel) critiqued Webb's rebuttal in regards to his point about wages not keeping up with cost of living and jobs going overseas as inaccurate. Stating IT jobs are coming in. My wages have been stagant for years, so maybe he needs to leave the creature comforts of MSNBC. As for IT jobs coming in to replace the outsourcing, come on. I live in Jersey, an IT hub, and let me tell you, for every IT job that comes in, the American companies do the patriotic thing they always do. They think of themselves and bring in an Indian from Banglagore. Iraq is not the threat to the U.S., nor is the Middle East. What will bring down this country in years to come is Corporate America and their greed. The real enemy is within. P.S. Did you check out Cheney giving one of his buddies a wink when Bush went on about energy and oil independence as if to say don't you worry about a thing, we got ya covered. Probably some oil crony.
this was nothing but a rehash...words... except him sliding in the "surge"! he insists on keeping up the argument that iraq is full of terrorists and that is why we are there, he did slip in the "this isn't where we were then but it is where we are now"! he will not admit that iraq had nothing to do with terrorism until AFTER he invaded, notice i say "HE" invaded! also, the entire room applauded like he was great, can you say twofaced, not what they are all saying in the media and he did go in with what, a 34% approval rating? if i got a 34% approval rating at my job i would be fired! he listens to the people 0% of the time, i will say he has excellent speech writers.. who else could write such an eloquent speech full of b.s. all i can say is 2008... HURRY UP AND GET HERE
Ditto to the above. It was almost like Schuster had to invent something inaccurate about Webb's speech. Everyone knows jobs are being completely out-sourced. Even worse, the IT jobs Schuster mentions are being filled by foreigners who get educated in our schools because our own children are too dumb to attend graduate level programs. How sad this country is becoming. Second, the goals presented are a scratch on the surface to what is really needed. This is republican strategy. Say you will do something. Then, don't do it. Then, when things aren't working blame Democrats. Then, when Democrats have to fix the mess by raising taxes, blame them again for that. Time to buck up, accept blame, and fix your own mess. Oh wait...that is what an adult would do.
"give War a Chance" was also a book by PJ O'Rourke that proved rather prophetic with what it said about America's role as the world's "policeman".
The concept that we can power the nation's automobiles using recycled vegetable oil and biodiesel is nice but unrealistic. Everyone not already on a french fry only diet would have to switch to deep fried everything in order to power the truck fleets with recycled veggie oil, and biodiesel is, at best, an adjunct to, not a replacement for, petroleum. We can't afford to repurpose the millions of acres it would take to grow the crops necessary to replace petroleum with biodiesel; we also have, it is reported, a need for the food currently grown on that land. What we need to do is to align ourselves with the Kyoto Protocol, pursue hydrogen fuelcell technology with the same passion that we pursued the race to the moon in the 1960s, and bite the bullet by taking another serious look at nuclear electricy generation technology.
