You never know who you'll meet at the Correspondents Dinner

Posted: Wednesday, March 28, 2007 4:29 PM by Hardball

Tonight is the Radio-TV Correspondents Dinner, the big Washington annual event where I met my wife Kathleen twenty nine years ago.

It was 1978.  I was a mid-level staffer at the White House.  Kathy was a producer at WJLA-TV.  We were introduced by Ann Edwards of the White House staff and have been together since.

Kathleen and I are bringing as our guest tonight Darrell Hammond of Saturday Night Live.   Darrell is an uncanny mimic.  He can do the very soul of Bill Clinton.  He brings Cheney onto the stage better than Cheney does.  And he does me.  If he’s as good at doing me as he is at doing those other guys, then he’s great!!!  I can’t tell because I can’t imagine what I’m like.  Can you imagine what you’re like?

Anyway, it’s a big night in DC.  It’s that dinner that William Hurt and Holly Hunter attended together in “Broadcast News.”  Most important to us, it’s where Kathy and I got together for good.

Congratulations for being with your wife for so long. I have been with my wife for almost as long, but it's because she works at our marriage. Me, all I've done is follow Frank's advice -- Frank Sinatra -- which he got from his father. "I have trouble with women," Frank said, "You've been married to the same woman for forty years. What should I do?" Frank's father said, "Don't talk, don't listen." Hello to Darrell -- he's the best.
I also liked the story of the first meeting of you and your wife. My husband, a union member, and I watch Hardball nightly and wanted to let you know that the term "Social Darwinism" is not totally foreign to us. I think perhaps Barach Obama has a better understanding of union members than that of you and your guests.
Chris I just started watching your show and I think it is great. The fact that you shared some very personal, positve insight on your relationship was great. I am also proud of you for losing the weight and I too, know it is an ongoing effort but you seemed to have mastered it. It is nice you have someone in your corner and I wish you much more success in the future. P.S. Daryll's impression of you is right on but he needs to now wear smaller clothes to really emulate you.

Congratulations. Watch you every night we can. Every time you speak about your wife the love is apparent.

Chris Matthews: Congratulations on your long and happy marriage. My uncle had the secret to a happy marriage and said it saved him years of misery. It was just two words - "Yes dear."
congrats on the long term marriage.i met my wife on a blind date in 1969 and got married in 1972.will be 35 years for us on june 4th this year. it seems couples like you and your wife and me and my wife are dinosaurs....no body wants to work at a marriage anymore.the tough times hit and its time to split.
Good for you Mary, I also come from a Union family and myself and my sons know "Social Darwinism". Chris, they really do allow Union families to send their children to college. Congratulations to you and your wife.
I enjoy Hardball very much Chris but the very Idea of the Correspondents dinner makes me uncomfortable. I don't want the press to be friends or even friendly to those in power. That goes for which ever party is in power. I want the press to be the hot breath of the people breathing constantly on the necks those elected to do the peoples business. If you people all socialize together then I am suspect.
Hammond gets you to the letter. All that is needed to say is HA!
I attended the White House Press Photographers affair around 1967-68 where Hubert Humphrey was the guest speaker. Is this the same event, only with a new name, that Chris attended the other night? If we're to be out to dinner, then we DVR Hardball so as not to miss anything. Chris, you are awesome! Don't hold back.
Hammond has got you to a t.Only thing to say is HA!
Congratulations to you and Kathleen. Hope y'all had a good time at the dinner! I had a drink or two here on the beach....to your health. Salud!
If you feel deterred because of the terrible amount of time it involves to find what you are searching for, relax because you\'re one step closer to your goal.
