Matthews: An honor to host first main event

Posted: Tuesday, April 17, 2007 6:44 PM by Hardball

Debates put presidential candidates on the same stage. That’s the way voters like to see them, squaring off, testing their wits, competing with ideas. These joint appearances are the main events of every presidential election.

Think of the historic moments in presidential debates -- “There you go again” in 1980, that George W. look when Gore approached him in 2000, that sweat on Nixon’s lip when he watched Kennedy in 1960, that look on Gary Hart's face when Mondale asked, “Where’s the beef?" in 1984.

It's an honor to be moderating the first Republican debate of 2008.

God Bless you Obama
Chris, thanks for pointing out to H. Fineman that Hillary's "retaliate" verbiage should not be considered the "correct" answer simply because Fineman believes it was the politically correct. Fineman and other pundits shouldn't be evaluating the success or failure of a debater simply because they know how to pander the best. Your answer to Fineman was right on: we want thoughtful leaders, not successful panderers.
rudy and john Mcain are old hat Mitt Rommey can bring something new to govt.
Dear Chris, Please ask the panel what they would do differently from George W. Bush-one word response? Hopefully their answers would be "everything".
Since Mit Romney or John McCain will not respond to my emails will you ask them? Ask the candidates how they will protect our border from illegal aliens. Why not give the mexican government incentive to register workers via an employment agency sending 30% of hours worked back to the government, and using 10% to pay for them to learn English, and for a PPO health insurance card. Create jobs, and register workers. Brozens economic law describes a welfare society: What if every city and state goes bankrumpt from continued provision of free health care, education, and services to illegal immigrants. Now they cost over 22K per capita from their host city, state government that didn't invite them. For their children assumed as legal residents because they abuse the amendment written for emancipated slaves. If we deported every illegal alien and saved annual expenses... and fined every business employing them, we could provide "free health care and medicine to all legal citizens over 65 and children who are not covered by parents insurance. Also provide college scholarships to graduating seniors...Think about.it...this is not a humans right issue it is an economic disaster. That will happen if something isn't done now!
Chris, You did the best job of any of the candidates. A+ for you, tonight.
