Hard to declare a winner in first debate...but I'll do it anyway

Posted: Tuesday, April 24, 2007 3:59 PM by Hardball

With all eight Democratic candidates on stage, the great and the good along with the second tier, it’s difficult for anyone to shine so brightly that he or she will be regarded as the winner—and the media, at least in the first flush of commentary, seldom declares a victor.  The real challenge—and opportunity—is to go into a debate like this with one or at most two strategic objectives.  Thus, in a 2004 radio debate shortly before the Iowa caucuses John Kerry’s relentless purpose was to nail Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt for proposing to repeal the entire Bush tax cut, including the portion that went to the middle class; Kerry favored repealing only the tax cuts for the top one percent—which Bush being Bush, accounted for the bulk of the money.  Kerry had additional lucky advantage; John Edwards, who had the same position he did, didn’t bother to show up.

All the Democrats are showing up in South Carolina Thursday night.  Will Barack Obama, who gave the first of a series of major policy speeches yesterday—that one on National Security—put substance under the sizzle?  Will John Edwards focus on trying to own health care, perhaps the domestic issue most important to democratic primary voters where he has a specific plan; Hillary Clinton’s is still uncertain and Obama promises to unveil his proposal soon.  Maybe he’ll jump the gun in the debate.  Speaking of guns, will Clinton, arguably positioned now as the establishment candidate in a year of change, commit an act of political bravery by volunteering before she’s asked that of course we ought to ban assault weapons and close the gun show loophole. (Whether she realizes it or not, she’s never going to be the candidate of the NRA.)

In light of the horror at Virginia Tech, I have a strong feeling Brian Williams will press the candidates on gun safety.  Someone like Sen. Clinton could answer the question before being forced to.  Someone like Sen. Obama can’t afford to sound like he’s ducking it if he intends to remain the candidate who doesn’t play politics as usual.  Everyone on that stage will have to take a position; watch to see if it’s real or jello.  Bill Richardson, of course, has a bit of a problem since he recently signed concealed carry in New Mexico.

Each of the second-tier candidates should try to break through with one distinguishing argument.  But it can’t be experience—that was four years ago.  Hillary has plenty, and Edwards and Obama have enough.

Finally, everyone except Sen. Clinton will say that the Iraq war resolution was a mistake.  Can she make do by emphasizing her support for a date for withdrawal—and how will she or any of the other candidates respond if Brian Williams presses on whether they mean all combat troops, or all US forces?  One thing I’m betting she won’t do is attack Obama—that tactic hasn’t worked out very well so far.  The debate is a real chance for Sen. Clinton to refresh her candidacy and let people who worry that she’s too carefully calibrated see her as she really is.  She’s not inevitable anymore, probably never was.  But she could win—the debate and the nomination.

P.S. At the end all the commentators should be required to say who they actually thought won.  I will.

Go Obama!!!!!
sen. clinton you have my vote. i hope that you get to the white house please investigated all the oil ceo
i think the clear winner is hillary shes an well experience- obama/just tak and talk no substance. edward a bet ok? we need someone who has lots of expreience otherwise this country is going down the tube like republican didi to this country desarray. hillary has to watch out obama nbec, obama is so critical to hillary plus hes so sarcastic.
If folks are serious at looking at experience - then take a closer look at Bill Richardson. He has the MOST experience and varied experience of them all. Wake up folks and look behind all the retoric and glitter.
Anybody but Hillary. I don't believe anything she says, after her refusal to apologize for her pro-war vote. No matter how brilliantly she may appear to perform in this debate, she can't erase that stain.
I'm rooting for Obama. Its time for some new blood. Isn't anyone else sick of The Bushs and Clintons? Do we really need Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton?
Anybody but Hillary. I don't believe anything she says, after her refusal to apologize for her pro-war vote. No matter how brilliantly she appears to perform in this debate, she can't erase that stain.
To early to care. I'm sick of Obama and edwards already. Maybe it is time for a woman.
Hillary will be impressive in the debate - she always is. She's smart and has a lot of substance and experience.
I think Barack Obama should announce Hillary Clinton as his Vice President. I'm pulling for you Barack.
I agree, the rupublicans didi this country desarray and Edwards is a bet ok. But I don't think Obama is just tak and talk, no substance. He's got substance he's just talking his time to pull his substance out and when he does I think we will all be impressed. And all of that will happen even though hillary, shes an well experience.
Obama has the fresh new voice that needs to be heard by democrats and republicans alike. This election is not about bi-partisan politics, its about getting this country back on track, and Mr. Obama is the man to do that.
The loser will be the American people if any of the Democrat candidates is elected President in 2008.
Kucinich is the logical choice!
Let's put it this way, I am for Hillary and Edwards. The others are playing race cards, Iraq cards and probably with the SWTG or with no cards at all. They (Hill and Eddie) seem to be the most genuine and less crafted of the bunch. They respond with openness and without presuming too much. You can tell they are at least CONCERNED with what is going on, not just 'running for president.'
Go McCain!!! All the democrats are hipocrates!
Obama in '08!
Let's see. Hillary had eight years in the White House to get a national health care plan passed. Yet nothing happened. It's hard for me to concentrate on John Edwards' message about caring for the poor when he is building a $2+ million dollar mansion for his family. Barack Obama has been in the U.S. Senate for, what, two years? The only one I see capable of handling the world in crisis mode, which is what we're in right now, is someone with a bit more experience than 8,4 or 2 years....with the ability to think strategically, manage crises here and abroad, and has the power to negotiate -- Joe Biden.
I don't want to know what the commentators think- I prefer to think for myself. Obama will show his dignity, tact and intelligence in this debate.
Senator Clinton you have my family’s vote and then some! I hope you win, I am really excited for the race and I know you will win; you will be the one on top this time! No recounts for sure!!! Mark, Pa.
The only loser will be the voters who think any of the Democratic candidates will say anything original.
go obama
Watch and listen to Bill Richardson. There's NO ONE among the candidates who has the national and international perspective that he has, and the right values for our country. It's about time we have a courageous politician with a backbone who will speak the truth as he sees it.
We need someone who has real experience. I like Bill Richardson. He has international experience and domestic experience. He will also mobilize the Hispanic vote. He is a Washington outsider, who knows his way around the Beltway.
Obama has experience, 8 years as a legislator. The question is who will appear solid, smart, and not playing to whatever the political wind is a the time. Hillary has declined in my view when I saw she was for whatever was popular at that time (see flag burning admendment)
For me, the winner will be the candidate that finally points out that we can't say we want freedom and a better life for the Iraqi people in one breath, and yet insists "we fight the terrorist over there and not in the U.S.". Is that what we do with people we care about? Use their country to fight our war? Who will step up and point that out finally?
I feel that after reading alot about all of them. That Edwards-president,obama-vice-president. As for Clinton, I don't care for her. And I'm female.
How about an Edwards/Clinton ticket????? Sounds great.
What I wouldn't give for just one candidate who I thought would actually do (I said, do, not talk) something about the huge issues facing this country. I don't see one in this list of usual suspects so I guess it's pick the best of the worst again. Lord help us all.
the first one to give us a list from which they will choose a cabinet will come out on top.
Obama wins the debate, the nomination, and the general election. Watch, wait and see...
I'm from Illinois and once everyone figures out that Senator "pothole" is nothing but a charade, a person who smiles a lot, ignores substantive ideas, and simply uses popular speech to gain media attention, Democrats will look elsewhere. I can't stand Obama...and I'm a liberal Democrat. I can't stand any of them, really, but Richardson looks to me like he could do a good job. But hey..any of them will be better than the crop of the GOP.
All you guys seem to think the democrats are any better than republicans. They are all politicians and will say anything to get elected. Just because Hillary voted for the war does not make her a fool. Kucinich is one of the most ignorant of the group. Obama is probably the better choice even though he is new to the game. The big problem in Washington is that a lot of politicians have been there too long. It is ran by a bunch of old, grey-haired, 1950-60's throwbacks that still have the mindset of that era. you cannot run a country in the 21st Century with the demeanor of the 19th Century. They all need term limits. No one here can tell me that at age 70+, your mind is what it was at age 35. 80% of the people in Washington are past Golden Years. Its bronze for them. We need new, young, whether republican or democrat.
It amazes me that out of all of these candidates that only one has published real views towards change? Thats Edwards. Edwards didnt enev hesitate to acknowledge that he would have to raise taxes to get universal health care. That takes guts, integrity, and common sense, because we all know that none of these other candidates will say anything of substance, just a bunch of fluff if you ask me. Go Edwards!
This for me is a no brainer, question, Clinton or OBama? If you needed protection for any reason, would you rather have a seasoned veteran protecting you and your interests or a rookie? The choice is yours come election day. For me the question is clear, give me that seasoned veteran every time. She has been there before, knows policy, and as for her war stance (apology), damned if she does, damned if she doesn't. To nkm@fidalgo.net if that is all you can see regarding Hilary, you certainly don't understand the importance of the next election. You must lead a shallow life.
If we want the White House we have to have Bill Richardson. Someone with depth & experience that could actually get the independent / GOP voters support. So take a look and listen. I think you'll find substance ... not glitter & repeaters (i.e.; Edwards & Clinton)
Hillary wouldn't even take a stand when her husband was unfaithful how can she be expected to make a stand as president. Bill Richardson will be by choice because of what he has done as governor of NM and his expierence in Washington. Richarson for President in 2008.
My first preference is Al Gore. If he is not coming back, then John Edwards is my second choice.
Hillary's experiance card is a sham.Absent her 6 years in the senate, she's about as qualified as Barbara or Laura Bush. Her war vote is unforgivable as we needed people with guts and conviction to stand up for the lives that were thrown away. The flag burning bill and attempt to replace Obama in the SC speech show what a dishonest panderer she is.Edwards who got rich in the courtroom, couldnt contain himself in the Cheney debate, and may not be any better than Bush in a crisis. We cant afford another Republican supreme court appointment. That leaves Barak Obama(Dodd isnt the type that gets elected POTUS unfortunatly)who is absolutly brilliant, honest and inspires. His experiance is that he is on record predicting the outcome of the war, while an Ill. elected official.Thats the experiance I want.Thats the experiance that alot of sons, daughters.husbands and wives, not to mention our service members needed. We got cowards instead, including Edwards who took Bob Shrum's advice and voted for the war.Kennedy saved the world because he was smart maybe Obama's smarts can get us back on track
It's as simple as ABC. Anyone But Clinton
Hillary will come through and win. Obama 08 is like Gary Hart 84 -- Where's the beef?
Anyone that bristles over a democrat winning the election in 08 need only look at the huge mess we have now with the most arrogant, uninformed decider this country has ever seen. Although far from perfection, the wisdom and depth of several democratic candidates can hardly be contested. As much as many may not like Clinton personally, she has the internal grit, intelligence and ability to tackle the hardest of issues. There are no simple answers to the many multi-faceted problems we have today.
If you vote in another Republican then you deserve what you get. Come on, look at what a mess this country is in!
Obama will be our next president, and you heard it here. He may not have the experience, but neither did Bush, at least he is honest.
Edwards and Omaba '08....That's the Democratic Presidential Ticket right there.
hillary i hope u winn this debate or u win and get the white house- ur the qomna of substance-obama not we need a pres, who has subsstance-been there an dont that.i know clinton ur husband and you is very good in this country uve done that before. democratic is the ebst in this country sray away form republican party- they destroy this country,.
I will campaign for Hilary CLinton, I haven't a clue as to how any woman in America can not realize that we are so much smarter than men. We just need to learn to stick together and root for each other instead of acting like Mean Girls!!! Girls rule, Boys drool, never changes from high school days. '
I'm an Obama Democrat all the way. I don't understand all the people who say he lacks substance. Have you read his books? I honestly don't think that questioning his substance is apt. If you're going to question him, you may have a point with inexperience, but the bunch we have in power now were supposed to have all the experience, and look where that got us? I like Clinton, but she is way too institutionalized and beholden to big money donors. I like the ideas Edwards has, but he came off as way too scripted in 2004, and I'm afraid he will again. Richardson should have ran in 2004. He seems pretty good, but he is just getting overshadowed by the big names. In my opinion, Obama is in a class all by himself. I haven't seen anyone connect with people the way he has since Bobby Kennedy.
There will be one clear choice after tonight's debates. One that will appeal to every American and all of our concerns and issues that affect our daily lives. There is but 1 choice for any kind of common sence solutions to all the problems we face day in and day out.! Clearly, John Edwards!
none of the above would be my choice ! to bad a. baldwin not running, with all his publicity he'd be a shoein for the libs
