Bill Richardson is magic

Posted: Thursday, April 26, 2007 8:12 PM by Hardball

(By MSNBC's Tucker Carlson)

Best question of the night: "How do hedge funds make America a better place?" Brian Williams asked that question of both Hillary Clinton and John Edwards. The correct answer is: They don’t. Yet both candidates dodged it. In other words, John Edwards is running an entire presidential campaign against corporate greed and on behalf of the disenfranchised working man, and he can’t even bring himself to criticize hedge funds, the very symbol of parasitic capitalism run amok. Come on.

Best answer of the night: “Yes.” That was Joe Biden’s monosyllabic response when Brian Williams asked him if, in the event he’s elected president, he’d be able to control his compulsive talking. You could see the strain on Biden’s face as he struggled to keep his tongue under control. But he did it, maybe for the first time, and for that he deserves credit.

Least believable moment: “Why do Republicans seem so eager to run against you?” Williams asked Hillary Clinton.  “Because I’ve stood up for what I believe in,” she answered. In other words, I’m so principled, so steadfast in my views, that my intellectual integrity intimidates my opponents. Ha! Even Clinton’s friends concede she’s politically malleable. Can she really believe this? Maybe she does. People’s capacity for self-deception is endless.

Most revealing moment: John Edwards admitted (by not raising his hand) that he has never had a gun of any kind in his house. And he claims to be a Southerner?

Most amusing moment: Bill Richardson pledging to get us out of Iraq “with diplomacy” on his very first day in office. On his second day, Richardson promised to solve the energy crisis. Bill Richardson is magic.

I am glad to see that Edwards doesn't own a gun, but I had the same reaction to Richardson's one diplomatic solution.
6 minutes left, any big finales?
Don't forget that on the fourth day Richardson would rest... is he trying to win over those southern evangelicals by trying to parallel himself to the story of creation?? It really would take a deity to do what he has outlined for his first few days! I basically agree with every word mentioned in the post and had some literal 'lol' moments reading it.
Great man you are.
Is Obama at his best when confronted or attacked?
Hey..What about the "old man in the corner"..Gravel from alaska?? He seems out of control, and going off the edge on some things..But i like him.. P.S. Obama is so,lifeless..I think he was built up by the republican hype machine..Just answer the question "B"!!!
It would have been nice to hear from everyone, not just the so called Top Three or Four. Very disappointing.
Tucker again comes to the rescue of his republican masters. The republicans hate Bill Clinton and transfer that hate to Hillary. She stands by her husband and forgives him, the republicans pounce. Where is their understanding of the sanctity of marraige , or is this just BS they talk to mask thier hatred of Gays
If you have armed security people can you claim to never have had a gun in your house? Send me a few fully armed FBI guys and you can have my guns.
How can it be that Senator Clinton hasn't lived with a gun in her house, but has lived with the armed Secret Service for the last fifteen years?
These guys (and gal) are dwarfs. They are caught up in the failings and flailings of a doomed presidency. Give me somebody with an eye to the future. Where was Al Gore?
This was the most pathetic line up of "Democrats" ever put together at one time in the history of democratic debates.
The Charlotte Observer ran a Washington Post article Monday about Edwards' work as a consultant for a hedge fund. It's employees are a big part of his support.
The real problems will come when some large hedge funds start blowing up. Then people will be saying "why didn't we regulate them more" Most of the hedge funds are playing the momentum game - high risk, high reward. Yet, look what happened when the dollar dropped only 3 cents against the yen. The stock market dropped 400 points in one day. Much of global liquidity is based on the carry trade(Japan's interest rate is at one-half percent.
Why are we having a televised debate a year and a half before the election. I agree that Joe Biden's answer was the best of the evening. I think I will lose it if I have to hear that haughty, condescending, "I'm so far above all of you I don't know why I even bother to waste my breath talking to you" voice of Hillary's for another year and a half, and perish the thought of having her as president. It literally makes me ill.
Considering Edwards has had small children for most of his adult life, the only thing that 'revealed' to me is he's a careful parent. I am NOT saying it's not possible to have both guns and children safely in the same house -- my father was a nationally-ranked rifleman in his day, and I grew up around guns -- but it's a reasonable concern, and a choice I think most of us can understand.
Suzanne, that's why Edwards was tossed that question. I'm pretty sure Edwards knew it was intended to be hostile, because he used the time to point out the ways in which the one he consulted on was regulated and what its specific goals were, rather than taking on the broader question, which is a pity. Because the broader answer is simply that in many if not most cases, unregulated and unchecked, they're a REALLY bad thing. However, if there's one candidate who's consistently proven his commitment to economic parity and equal opportunity, I think Edwards definitely is that candidate. Still, he could have used that question much more effectively.
Go Bill Richardson! He may not do it all on day 1 or 2, but he can get the job done for the public-interest.
