The Godfather, Part Four

Posted: Wednesday, May 16, 2007 5:58 PM by Hardball

It was the “Hospital scene” from the Godfather. The only things missing were the black Marias and the turned-down fedoras.  There was the target, Attorney General John Ashcroft, lying semi-conscious and vulnerable on the gurney.   Heading toward him weren’t armed hoodlums but operatives Card and Gonzalez armed with the authority of a President.   In the role of saving son, James Comey, the deputy attorney general standing up for Ashcroft.

The Godfather, Part Four... We’re talking about Comey’s sworn account of White House efforts to push their surveillance campaign past a seriously ill Attorney General.

Chris, I want to applaud you for really sticking it to that Georgia Congressman who tried to compare Iraq to Germany and South Korea. You stood up for the truth like you always do. The hair on my neck stood up when you raised your voice because I know you spoke in righteous anger.
This sorry excuse for an executive branch is an unmitigated disgrace.
I didn't see the GOP debate as a blog topic but please place this there if I missed it. I agree with you a large majority of the time Chris, but you're dead wrong in your Rudy idolatry tonight. Ron Paul was the only guy up there who has stood against our wreckless intervention in Iraq from the start (including our first run at it in 1991) and he is the one who's been proved correct. Have you never heard of the blowback to which Dr. Paul was referring? If not, you'll find it mentioned all over the 9/11 commission report and various books by regional experts many of whom used to work for the CIA (Michael Scheuer, head of the bin Laden task force among them). While the '93 WTC attack may not have been for the no fly zone it certainly was for the first gulf war and the estimated 500,000 Iraqi children who are said to have died as a result of our embargo (according to several official British and international studies). The CIA calls this blowback and it has been a known phenomena to just about everyone in intelligence and anyone who bothers to read the 9/11 report, which Rudy apparently hasn't. Dr. Paul was the only one who had the courage to speak his convictions and not back down and you didn't even bother to show his brief response to Rudy's simplistic, ra-ra talking points.
Now the compassionate conservtatives see what they elected to the White House. They are suppose to be religiuos people, but they turn out to be thugs from Texas. They thought that Bill Clinton and his administration was bad. This takes the cake. I don't believe one thing that this administration said or do. They are playing with Americans intelligence, and I hate to say it but some Americans believe them, and shows lack of intelligence. It is all about money and power, and the republican party does not show that they do not care about the American people (matter of fact the people that elected them to office ).
What a sad dysfunctional Government. We claim to be the shining City on the Hill? This president squeaked into office by hock or by crook and THEN tries his best to destroy democratic traditions, embarress the courts, end America's good name in the world, sell out to K Street -- all for what? Republican Rule forever. Corporate imperialism. You would think that George Bush believes he is some kind of Franklin Roosevelt elected for a third term. What hubris! This is no born again Christian. This is a complete barbarian. And now, keep your mitts off Romney, who is a Harvard Law School graduate, wants to fear monger with larger Guantonimo's so that (some wrongly) accused will get NO legal representation whatsoever. We need Bloomberg to head a Third Party, not Hillary or fear mongering Rudy. Competence in Government, not nepotism and buddy-buddism. Welcome back to the blog, Chris, I missed you. Too much softball, celebrity inside MSNBC fluff lately.
How is it these guys stay in power? By the time all this finds the light of day, the "lost emails", etc, they will all be in the private sector. These clowns have done all they can to wreck America and all that it once stood for.
Isn't it obvious by now that the Bush/Cheney Cartel is leading the U.S. into fascism? Of course it's difficult for the average American to realize this when you have the mass media turning a blind eye to the truth, having shallow knowledge of the facts, and simply going after the sound bites of "patriotism" and "fear". The exchange between Mr.Guilianni and Mr.Paul during the debate was a perfect example of the ignorance of the American people. Mr.Guilianni received applause for saying Mr.Paul's "blowback" theory was "absurd". Yet the 911 Commission Report and CIA analysis support Mr.Paul's blowback theory. So the applause Mr.Gulianni received was "patriotic", but based on ignorance. The only optimism I found was that Mr. Paul won the debate based on the Faux News poll (which they dismissed). I enjoy your Hardball show because you tend to press politicians into more then simply sound bites. Keep up the good work. Perhaps interviewing people like Mr. Gravel, Mr. Kucinich, and Mr. Paul the average American will be able to see how this great country is being taken down a destructive path because these men have the "outrageous" courage to speak the truth. They also have the knowledge to support what they say.
My gosh, I was stunned and frightened as I listened to James Comey. I was thinking. this can't be true, yet I just knew he was telling the absolute truth. Alberto Gonzales is the biggest joke ever perpetrated on the American people, yet we are not laughing, because we are becoming more frightened with every passing day. We have no confidence in the justice department. Somebody needs to do something. NOW.
Man, I'm John Doe.
What an apt metaphor! It's funny you should make a "Godfather" comparison with Gonzales, Chris, becuase I read a blog a few hours ago railing about the 'Berto- Fredo connection: http://timcbrowne.blogspot.com/2007/05/arriba.html Come on, when is the President going to wake up and dump this schmuck?
A critical mass seems to be brewing with AG Gonzalez. I can't imagine how he can continue to function effectively knowing that both within the DOJ and externally his credibility is gone. In the spirit of the headline, perhaps we'll have to wait a few years for the colorful story on how the Don (Bush) gives his consigliere (Gonzalez) his kiss that sends him down the river. Can't wait for that Book.
I am glad Gonazlez was not appointed to the supreme court. We have Clarence ,scalia and robetrs who may live a long time another worse character would have been worse than Iraq war.
Chris,it's amazing that a couple of stains can get a President impeached ,but 3500 dead soldiers and up to three quarter of a million dead Iraqis can't get these cowardly Reps in congress to say the word. What happensd to the country I grew up in?
Please keep this up on your web site for as long as possible. The report by David Shuster is by far and away the most detailed and many people as possible should see this. The testimony is so powerful and left me frightened.
Gonzalez needs to go!
The Godfather comparison is great, but then haven't we REALLY stepped into a bad episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE? Future generations -- let's assume for the sake of agrument there will be future generations -- will think historians must have it wrong, it couldn't have been this insane. Let the Eagle Soar!
Illegals can earn their American citizenship by going to fight in Irag for America.
