Elizabeth Edwards vs. Ann Coulter

The wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards called into MSNBC’s “Hardball” on Tuesday to confront Ann Coulter on her personal attacks on her husband and family.

Coulter, the controversial conservative commentator, appeared on an outdoor set with host Chris Matthews -- and also with dozens of supporters and detractors waiting to ask questions. But there was another person waiting to pose a question to Coulter: Elizabeth Edwards.

According to an Edwards campaign aide, Elizabeth Edwards wanted to call into the show when she heard that Coulter would be taking questions, and she called a Hardball producer to get the phone number needed to dial into the show. The result is the exchange below  (click here to watch the video):

Chris Matthews: You know who's on the line? Somebody to respond to what you said Edwards yesterday morning -- Elizabeth Edwards. She wanted to call in today we said she could. Elizabeth Edwards go on the line you're on the line with Ann Coulter

Elizabeth Edwards: Hello, Chris.

Matthews: You wanna say something directly to the person who's with me?

Edwards: I'm calling you … in the South when someone does something that displeases us, we wanna ask them politely to stop doing it. Uh - I'd like to ask Ann Coulter -- if she wants to debate on issues, on positions -- we certainly disagree with nearly everything she said on your show today -- but uh it's quite another matter for these personal attacks that the things she has said over the years not just about John but about other candidates. It lowers our political dialogue precisely at the time that we need to raise it. So I want to use the opportunity … to ask her politely stop the personal attacks.

Ann Coulter: OK, so I made a joke -- let's see six months ago -- and as you point out they've been raising money off of it for six months since then.

Matthews: This is yesterday morning, what you said about him.

Coulter: I didn't say anything about him actually either time.

Edwards: Ann, you know that's not true. And once more its been going on for sometime.

Coulter: I don't mind you trying to raise money. I mean it's better this than giving $50,000 speeches to the poor.

Edwards: I'm asking you.

Coulter: Just to use my name on the Web pages…

Edwards: I'm asking you politely…

Coulter: … but as for a debate with me, um yeah, sure. Yeah, we'll have a debate

Edwards: I'm asking you politely to stop personal attacks.

Coulter: How bout you stop raising money on the Web page then?

Edwards: It didn't start it did not...

Coulter: No you don't have cause I don't mind

Edwards: It did not start with that you had a column a number of years ago

Coulter: OK, great the wife of a presidential candidate is calling in asking me to stop speaking...

Matthews: Let her finish the point...

Coulter: You're asking me to stop speaking, stop writing columns, stop writing your books.

Matthews: OK, Ann. Please.

Coulter: OK

Edwards: You wrote a column a couple years ago which made fun of the moment of Charlie Dean's death, and suggested that my husband had a bumper sticker on the back of his car that said ask me about my dead son. This is not legitimate political dialogue.

Coulter: That's now three years ago --

Edwards: It debases political dialogue. It drives people away from the process. We can't have a debate about issues if you're using this kind of language.

Coulter: Yeah why isn't John Edwards making this call?

Matthews: Well do you want to respond and we'll end this conversation?

Edwards: I haven't talked to John about this call.

Coulter: This is just another attempt for –

Edwards: I'm making this call as a mother. I'm the mother of that boy who died. My children participate -- these young people behind you are the age of my children. You're asking them to participate in a dialogue that's based on hatefulness and ugliness instead of on the issues and I don't think that's serving them or this country very well.

 [Applause from the crowd]

Matthews: Thank you very much Elizabeth Edwards. (Turning to Coulter) Do you want to -- you have all the time in the world to respond.

Coulter: I think we heard all we need to hear. The wife of a presidential candidate is asking me to stop speaking. No.

Ann Colter is drinking the kool-aid
how can Chris Matthews give Ms. Coulter a platford to spew her twisted views on Iraq.  Tell her that most Americans do not buy her, or Rush's,  twisting of the FACTS.
Coulter is great.  She's so funny.  If it wasn't for her uncanny sense of irony, she'd just be a loony old chick.  She's not serious, after all, is she?  And what's with the black cocktail dress?
WHY Chris WHY? Ann Coulter is ridiculous. Putting her on your show somewhat legitimizes her. She just is outrageous for outrageousness sake. This is embarrassing to watch.

She is a horrid human period
Good Grief Chris, why on earth would you have a hate-mongering woman like that on your show and not make even a lame attempt to correct her when she makes statements that are obviously downright lies?  Call her on advocating knocking off the 15 year olds in Iraq, "who might become terrorists..." because they are not American...so their lives don't matter....and the fact that we were the ones that upended their lives and allowed them to be coerced by Al Queda slip by.  Good Grief.....
I would like to publicly commend Chris Matthews for putting up with Ann Coulter and her mob of pseudo-Christian morons. She is typically rude, illogical, dogmatic and defensive (i.e. O'Reilly, Limbaugh). I have more respect for Paris Hilton than Ann Coulter. They're both vapid, clueless idiots; atleast Paris doesn't come on Hardball and espouse her political views! Keep up the good work, Chris!
Coulter makes a living out of hate. Baseless lies about anyone she decides to harass. Enough of the hate. I'm tired of it and so are a majority of the people in this country. All its used for is to cover up the lack of real dialogue on issues facing this country. Keep em divided keep em scared is the current trend. Doesn't do any thing to fix the problems just makes them worse. My mother had it right when she told me that woman needs her mouth washed out with lye soap.
Just hearing her makes me go liberal - ok joking she is really (coulter) a weird individual.  Independent an probably vote demo based on what im seeing.  It is scary that the people behind her as I watch the show that there are this many people that have no more clue about hussin being involved then this lady talks.  To bad she is such a hateful person, nice how she talks to Mrs Edwards. I will not vote for anyone coulter backs.
While I think Coulter is sharp and right on in her political dialogue, I agree with Mrs. Edwards that she should stop the personal attacks. It's the same advice O'Reilly gave to Donald Trump.
I am a militant conservative and I am frequently embarassed by how uncouth she is. A lot of what she says is just outrageous
Unfortunately, Ignacio, she IS serious, and usually bending legitimate facts and numbers to suit her purpose.  She's been debunked more than once, and I liken her to Paris Hilton...all fluff, no filler, not newsworthy.
Ann is a little out there but I get a kick out of people that hate her for the jokes he makes on the left.  Just think if the right got as offended at everything that was said about them.
Annie is free to say whatever she likes. Did anyone notice, however, that she wasn't free, or wasn't able, to defend the validity of her personal attacks?

She never even attempted to justify her misanthropy.
I turned the show off after the Elizabeth Edwards phone call.  I am not sure why anybody would buy an Ann Coulter book and put one nickel into her pockets.  I think it says a lot about our society, unfortunately.
Does anybody else feel they need a shower after listening to the female version of Adolf Hitler?
Too bad she was born 70 years too soon, they needed
a few more polished liars for the Gestapo.
One can only hope for serious misfortune & poor
health for this golddigging sicko.
WHile I know you love a  good lively debate, Chris, I cannot understand why you would give a hatemonger like Ann Coulter air time on your show.  As Elizabeth Edwards pointed out, she spends most of her time on personal attacks and slurs on others, without debating the facts.  She HAS brought the political debate down to a new low.

Even the idiot George Bush and his poisonous colleagues Cheney and Rove do not get as low as Ann Coulter. When she is not on the personal attack front, her attempts as discussing the "issues" are usually to spew extremist viewpoints supported by obscure factoids, most taken out of context and usually wrong.  Her most frequent comments are "If you let me finish my sentence" (although she feels free to interrupt everybody), and "Read my book"...
I think Ann thinks she's "hot", and she needs to stop playing with her hair. Could that be nervousness? No! she doesn't have a nervous bone in her body!
Who appointed this woman to be a political pundit? The only talent she apparently has is to appeal to the lowest common denominator in the popular culture. The fact that the mainstream media continue to let her spout her lies, slander, etc. (Aren't those words the titles of her books??) speaks volumes on how journalism has gone downhill in this country. And by the way, at least Paris Hilton went to jail for her crimes--when is this woman going to pay her debt to society for fraudulently using an address to vote??
I would compare Ann Coulter to a Paris Hilton. There is no value in what she says and she is merely sensationalizing for the cameras!
The right does get overly offended at anything that challenges their tyranny. Ann is no different.  She should not be given a platform to speak, but what does one expect from a media owned by the same people that financed the Nazis?
She is a professional agitator. If Ann would stop personally attacking people, She would have no career and no notoriety. I know a lot of conservatives that find her repulsive.
What makes Ann Coulter such an expert? What are HER creditantials? Obviously, she has made a great deal of money with her caustic remarks, but where has she paid HER dues? Is she such an intellectual that people actually put credence in her remarks?
Mann coulter is the total Al Quaida supporter.  She/It has no guts, no brains and I really would wonder about the morons that support her/him.
ann coulter is so yesterday.stuff like this just alienates her from the mainstream more and more.of course  she is so needy she always has to be " controversial".
Why did you bother with her?  She offers nothing toward solving any outstanding problems, is a big mouth and parades around like Paris Hilton.  When will you have Dick Lugar on your show?
This woman does not say anything except hateful things. She does not deserve a platform on your show.
Hello, Ann Coulter was clearly blind-sided by Mr. Matthews. Period! Is that fair? Ms. Coulter reacted in a very composed manner, deflecting the outrageous and unrelenting accusations/misperceptions by Mrs. Edwards (and in a related manner... by Mr. Matthews). It's really unfair that Mr. Matthews obviously took an unacceptably supportive stance for Mrs. Edwards; it seemed he just could not contain his original intent to "grill" Ann Coulter. Ann Coulter made her point that her detractors continue to use her brilliant written body of work OUT-OF-CONTEXT! Ms. Coulter has a superb sense of humor and uses it to make her points which include, among the many, that hypocrisy and lack of honesty are so engrained among "those" who fail to understand her sincere and well-researched writngs and that "those"  then offer only the most irrelevant, disconnected and unresearched arguements in response to Ann Coulter's brilliant statements. Please Ann Coulter, always continue to press on with your perfect ability to never allow anyone to "talk-over" you. Please always persist in presenting your exceptionally enlightened viewpoint. Thank you.
I think the problem is that Coulter's "jokes" aren't even remotely funny.  She says that she wishes John Edwards would be killed in a terrorist attack and you, for some reason, think that's funny?

Sick.  Period.
Ann Coulter and others like her are the reason many people not interested in the political process.  For them, this is not about a true political dialogue.  Rather Ann seeks to claim fame for herself.  It would appear that Ann has determined that any press is good press.  It is time for people to start peeling back the layers of people like Ann, their motivation is grab the spotlight not support any true political cause.
Ann Coulter is not stupid.  She is being obnoxious on purpose.  She is not trying to win people to her way of thinking.  Rather, she attempts to whip up fervor among those who already share her point of view.  She does not add to the civil discussion of issues but skillfully manipulates gullible "conservatives" to blindly follow wherever she leads.
This only makes her more arrogant. Attention fuels people like her and the disrespect she shows towards honest democracy is horrible.
I lost my son in an accident three years ago. Nothing hurts like that and I wish no one would ever have to feel that pain. To make a joke out of someone's tragedy like that, even if they are a public figure, is so far beyond decent I don't know how to describe it. Mr. Matthews, why would you have someone on your program that mocks the loss of a child? Mr. Matthews, do you have no shame?
Wow.  She's even worse than I had previously thought.  And for a "shim" that looks like some sort of venomous preying (yes, I know) mantis, folding and unfolding her Darfur-esque limbs, she certainly has a lot to say about other people's physical imperfections.  And middle-aged women really should pass on the mini skirts.  Yikes!
The only thing I can say about Ann Coulter is that you know you've won when they resort to name-calling....
Good for you Mrs. Edwards! You have every right to defend and protect your family and your points are valid. Exchanges like we heard today just show that Ms. Coulter is incapable of backing the ignorant remarks that she makes.
It's like conversations I have with my teenager.  "I'm asking you to stop the personal attacks."  "Oh, you want me to stop talking or writing books?"  Is this what Mrs. Edwards asked?  Mrs. Edwards once again proved how much class, restraint & compassion she has.
Ann Coulter and her hallucinations are dangerous in that there may be people out there that actually think she is telling the truth! I am appauled that she makes light of people who lost loved ones. I would love to see a show that digs into her past and fact checks her so called "truths". She is practically pathological in her rants. Mr. Matthews, why do you let her openly disrespect you and your show? Let her have a dose of her own medicine!
Ann Coulter spews venom...there should be no forum for someone who continually maligns people and accepts no responsibility for her words.
Leo Blair must have the hots for Ann Coulter. Nobody could be that stupid unless they were in love.
The truly amazing thing is the number of people who buy her garbage "hook, line and sinker. I can't begin to imagine what reality looks like to a Coulter follower.
The clearest evidence of America's decline is that many people see nothing wrong with Ann Coulter's constant spewing of venom and personal attacks. In the 60's there was a phrase "the sick society." It appears that society is still here.
Ann Colter is so full of anger and venom that she can't communicate with someone like Mrs. Edwards.  I am disappointed the MSNBC gave her a forum...an hour at that.  My mother would have said that people like Ms. Colter don't have any class, so just ignore them.  I don't believe any Republican candidate/wife would condone her remarks.
Chris--why, why, why---please don't do this again. You are better than this and so is your show.  Let her spew her vitriol on Limbaugh's show.
Aside from displaying her mean spirited hatefulness she consistently refuses or is incapable of answering a direct question.  What is the point of an interview--all we learn is that she is selling a book.  She is pure evil.
You say that she maligns people- This "maligning" is taking place in the realm of truth, it isn't as if she is being dishonest. If these are truths about the people and/or candidates that we should know a considerable amount about before electing, then i think she has every right in the world to give her views.
if her comments had any basis in reality maybe they would be acceptable, but unfortunately they are vitriolic, illogical, and worst of all made up on the spot. Anyone who believes her clearly needs to try getting their news from some where other than "Fox Noise".
WAY TO GO, ELIZABETH EDWARDS!!!  YOU'RE A GREAT MOM! DEFENDING YOUR PRECIOUS SON!
Ann Coulter knows how to sell her brand. Make a few outrageous comments mixed with some personal attacks. In return, she sells a million books and secures a few speaking gigs.
Talk about name calling and double standard speech, Elizabeth Edwards is the queen of misdirection. It seems that Chris and Ms. Edwards conviently forgot about Ms. Edwards little name calling of her neighbor in Chatham County earlier this year. I'm just glad I don't have her as a neighbor because Freedom of speech, no matter how poorly it appears, would be a dead topic in the hypocritcal world of Ms. Edwards. I feel for Ms. Edwards, but please let John speak for himself. He was a capable lawyer years ago hear in North Carolina. Let him fight his own battles.
Elizabeth Edwards is a lady, Ann Coulter you are not.
Evidently when the loser John Edwards said "help is on the way," he meant his wife.  What a loser, that is why he is running third is the democratic nomination.  He is trying to stir up anything to help his campaign, the guy is a loser.  Why doesn't he keep taking advantage of the poor and leave the rest of America alone.  His pathetic act is getting tired
