Both Coulter and Edwards win by fighting

Posted: Wednesday, June 27, 2007 11:41 PM by Sam Go

by David Shuster, Hardball correspondent

It was dramatic, confrontational, and the newest chapter in a bitter political feud that began four years ago.

  • In November 2003, Ann Coulter wrote a column attacking John Edwards  and accusing him of using his son’s death for political gain.  Coulter wrote: “If you want points for not using your son’s death politically, don’t you have to take down all those ‘Ask me about my son’s death in a horrific car accident’ bumper stickers?” The shocking comments ignited a political fire storm.
  • Earlier this year, Coulter continued to target Edwards when she used a derogatory word to describe him at a conservative political conference.
Coulter at CPAC conference, on Edwards: "I was going to have a few comments on the other democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards, but it turns out that you have to go into rehab if you use the word faggot, so I’m kind of at an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards, so I think I’ll just conclude here and take your questions."
  • On Monday,  Coulter stepped up the attacks on Edwards again while plugging her latest book. On GMA this week: "I wouldn’t insult gays by comparing them to John Edwards. Now, that would be mean. But about the same time, you know, Bill Maher was not joking and saying he wished Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack. "So I’ve learned my lesson. If I’m gonna say anything about John Edwards in the future, I’ll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot."
The Edwards campaign immediately cashed in on the controversy by featuring it on their Web site in a fundraising appeal.

While the campaign was raising money, Elizabeth Edwards decided to confront Coulter herself on Tuesday's "Hardball." Every major blog and Web site that covers politics and covers the news has featured the video of that phone call—from The Drudge Report, Huffingtonpost, TV Newser. And the downloads keep coming on YouTube.

So how did the Ann Coulter-Elizabeth Edwards confrontation happen?

Before Tuesday’s Hardball appearance, MSNBC and MSNBC.com promoted that viewer comments and questions would be part of the program.

According to Hardball executive producer Tammy Haddad, “The Edwards campaign called to ask if it was possible that Elizabeth could talk to Ann Coulter live on the air.  And we told them yes.”

In turn, Haddad had a conversation with Coulter. “I talked to Ann before the show and told her we had gotten a call from the Edwards campaign and that Elizabeth might call in and she was fine with it,” she says.

In the third block of the show, Elizabeth Edwards was patched in. This morning, the confrontation got more air time on the Today Show. On the show, Chris weighed in, saying “In human terms, Elizabeth Edwards has won this round.”

A history of provoking... or is it marketing?
Coulter has a lengthy record of provoking critics and making new enemies—all of which fuels her notoriety and book sales.

Shortly after 9/11, she referred to the Muslim world and said,  “We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity.”

While covering the 2004 Democratic convention for USA Today,  Coulter began one article with “here at the spawn of satan convention in Boston...”

Last year, Coulter attacked the  9/11 widows known as the Jersey girls, saying “These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them.... I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands’ deaths so much.”

A boost to the Edwards campaign as well
But the attention is just what the Edwards campaign was hoping for, according to MSNBC political analyst Pat Buchanan. “You want to get into fights with people who are terribly unpopular with the constituency you are after," says Buchanan. "People will say, ‘Good, the Edwards are going after Ann Coulter, she really deserves it, good for them.  They are standing up to the beast,’ as it were.”

The Edwards campaign is raising more money off of Coulter. Today, the campaign added another fundraising appeal on their Web site featuring clips from Coulter’s appearance on Hardball.

Coulter, though, is also benefiting from the confrontation.  Over the last day, sales of her latest book are way up.

Elizabeth, as well as the entire Edwards campaign, has won every round against Coulter. Coulter's disgracful actions are no longer accepted by a majority of Americans - so much so that we dig in our pockets to support someone or a group she attacks. Overwhelming support branched out for the gay community after continual attacks from Coulter - and now the same has happened for the Edwards campaign. When will Ann learn?
Why should we care what Bill Maher, Ann Coulter or any of a number of these people think?  Ann said what she did to sell books, Elizabeth Edwards did what she did to draw more attention to a floundering political campaign, who really cares about either??
Watching that clip of Ms Coulter made me think of the famous exchange between Joseph Welch and Senator McCarthy:

"Until this moment, Senator, I think I never gauged your cruelty or recklessness...."

Followed by

"Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator.... You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

It appears that Ms Coulter is a worthy successor to the late senator and his defamatory mode of operation. The difference, 53 years later, is that in 1954 the American people were sickened by this kind of behavior, whereas now it passes for a form of entertainment. It would appear that in providing a forum for unconscionable behavior, Hardball is to political discourse what the WWE is to real sports.
Ann Coulter and the rest of her kind are the reason why this country is so messed up and no one is willing to work together.  Just keep the hate coming on and then ask for forgiveness on Sunday, then start it up on Monday again.  It is no wonder other nations laugh at us.
"The Edwards campaign is raising more money off of Coulter. Today, the campaign added another fundraising appeal on their Web site featuring clips from Coulter’s appearance on Hardball.

"Coulter, though, is also benefiting from the confrontation.  Over the last day, sales of her latest book are way up."

It's pretty clear who's NOT benefiting, and that's the GOP. Go Ann, go! You and Bush together can cripple the Republican party for a couple of elections.

People like Ann Coulter just wants to keep both partys fighting it out on every issues. This stops the partys trying to work with one another. This is what this blond does very well... and for the young adults being their behind Ann is being brain wash with the right wing tackteches. And yes Ann Coulter works for & with the right wing machine.
Why is it that when a Conservative Republican makes a comment that makes a liberal mad it is broadcast across the Nation as hate speech but when a liberal makes a comment as in the case of bill maher "wishing Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack", it is dismissed as a joke. If the comment is so bad and in the words of john edwards wife "HATE SPEECH" why is it being used on her husbands website to get money for his campaign.
It is people like Ms. Coulter that drive the citizens of this country out of the election booths.  If this is political discourse then why bother, most might say.  And it works too.  Look and the percentage of voters and buy how much Republican candidates win by.  Truth is most only get elected by 30 - 36% of ALL elegible voters.  It is a brilliant tactic and it has been working for the GOP and radical right for years. Just keep poisioning the system and drive all but the very die hard voters away and you will have an advantage.
As usual, the Edwards' and some of your readers don't get it.

First, Ms. Coulter is NOT a politician. Her language may not be appropriate for a polical candidate, but the voters would determine that, right?

Second, Ms. Coulter's "hateful" speech could easily be countered with reasoned responses. However, the Edwards' have none and utilize a bait-and-switch tactic to change completely the topic of debate.

Third, I think it's human nature to become more vitriolic in speech when the other party is disengenuous, overly ambitious or just plain stupid. I think Ms. Coulter could be more convincing without her "hurtful" speech, but then we all can't be Ronald Reagan, can we?

Finally, for those who think that parties always have to work together, get real. There comes a time when values and principles cannot be compromised. That's where the intelligent individual actually listens to what is actually being said, filters out the rhetoric, and aligns himself with one or the other.
Ann Coulter appears to be a shallow minded person.  She has no intellectual subject to say so she resorts to disgraceful comments to gain attention.  This is so sickening...I would hope that Americans are smarter than what Ann portrays them to be.  People should not support this kind of behavior.  I applaud Elizabeth Edwards for speaking up.  She sets a good example to all of us. If we all speak up and say enough is enough, then and only then will these nonsense, unintellectual people like Ann be stopped.
Ann Coulter is a shining example of what's wrong with America.  She thinks she can say whatever she wants, and believes that she's right.  For someone who has written numerous book, I was appalled by her inability to defend her comments and the use of her language.  I don't know what is convincing about her saying that "we should invade the Muslim world, kill their leaders, and convert them Christianity."  Thanks for fueling the hate in this dangerous world Ms. Coulter.
Edwards supporters should relax.  Much of the vitriol Ann Coulter spews in her effort to sell books actually hurts the candidates she alledges to favor.  I don't think she cares as long as she sells more books. Meanwhile, the Edwardes image benefits by from the smear their real opponents suffer from being associated with Coulter in voters minds.
As far as I can tell, Ann calls them like she sees them.  The Edwards' are hypocrites of the 1st degree and she points it out in a raw way that the libs are uncomfortable with.   (unless they do it themselves of course)

Hate speech is "much more" predominate from the left as is proved over and over agian.  Or, do you not see what comes out of the entertainment world, the main stream media and, worst of all, the colleges and universities?  If you don't see, pull you head out.....of the sand.
After hearing Ann Coulter's trash talking mouth, I'm ashamed to say I'm a Republican.  I pray that every presidential candidate, be they Dem or GOP, stands up, on air, through the media, and denounces this woman and tells her to shut her big fat mouth and leave the Edwards alone!
Coulter is a journalist who uses exaggeration and hyperbole to get her point across.  Just like Michael Moore and Bill Maher.  Those who accuse Coulter forget the relentless campaign of hate directed against Mr Bush, and also the way that Senator Edwards used the death of his son to manipulate Senator Kerry - in his own words.
Ann Coulter is a reckless, small-minded individual.  I cannot believe the GOP has any interest in Ms. Coulter representing them in any form or fashion.  I applaud Mrs. Edwards to standing up to the Ms. Coulter and exposing her as the bully she has been over the years.
Though I agree with most of Couter's ideology, I found her 'brushing off' of Edwards' request to be a bit of a cop-out. Like most bullies, she avoided the request before her, trying to turn the issue around in her favor, while not really approaching the topic at hand. Edwards asked 'stop the personal attacks' and Couter replied with rhetoric about the Edwards' fundraising tactics.

While one could argure that there is some ethical issues with the Edwards' fundraising tactics, it's not that much different from Couter using such publicity to sell books?

Edwards' had the ball in her court at that moment, and could have retorted by calling Couter a hypocrite, and challenged her intentions for the various 'personal attacks'. But in the long run, Edwards' 'kill them with kindness' strategy was successful, as I feel she came out as the better person in this conflict.

To sum up...though I agree with Couter's ideology, I don't agree with her strategy. In contrast, I don't agree with Edwards' ideology, but her strategy was appropriate and well timed - it's the age-old conflict between the big-city activist and the true southern belle. In this case, the south wins.
Until the REPUBLICANS call Ann on her behavior, we're left to assume that her comments are what they, the so-called "moral majority", are REALLY thinking. Nicely coifed, but ugly to the bone.
Ann Coulter is the best thing that ever happened to the Democratic party. Everytime she opens her mouth the GOP loses more potential votes. Keep up the hate mongering Ann! You'll get a Democrat in office yet!
Ann Coulter doesn't speak for the Repulican Party.  She's an author and a pundit.  It's political entertainment designed to stir up dialog, make people think and sell books.
Most people miss the irony of all this.
Her post 9/11 comments about the Muslim word are a perfect example of this.  That is what they intend to do to the West (and have tried for the past 1200 years, read your history).
I find it funny that she never can remember her own writings, in HER books, when a journalist brings up a passage from a book of hers.  She always looks like a deer in the headlights.  She can't even remember her own lies.  Instead of actually reading her books, just read Al Franken's instead.  He interprets what she's really saying quite well. And he gives us a big laugh in the process.
The deliberate misrepresentation of Ann Coulter's remarks by the left only serves to make her essential point.  The double standard  used to villify conservatives and thereby promote liberals is so blatant  that it is a bit frightening.  Whether the process is a result of simpleminds in the liberal world or just intellectual dishonesty is becoming irrelevant as the public is increasingly exposed to so much that is not true by the mega-phone for the left wing, todays media elite, that appropriate public policy decisions become less and less likely.
I don't particularly care for Ms. Coulter's verbiage, but I am amazed that most people forget the Hitlerian references to Bush by many of the Democrats and liberals in the nation.  If they know their history, they would know that such a comparison is ludicrous!  I don't recall First Lady Bush confronting people over those statements!  The left can give, but it has a hard time taking!
It apprears to me that since Pres. Bush has made such a mess the republican's party  is now incapable of discussing legitimate political issues. It seems the fall back tactic is to revert to someone who is completely irrelevent, Coulter, and try to pass it off as political discussion.
Thank God, Ann Coulter has the intelligence and inititive it takes to research and make available in print what the liberal folks of this country have in
store for the rest of us.  She isn't shy about speeking out, why should she take the flak without  kicking it back?

Freedom of speech is a right. No one ever notes you have the right not to listen or agree. For most thats a given. That right is for political speech. Most thinks it for an artist to express themselves. Not true, if ya don't like it don't listen.
Ann just LOST MY VOTE. I promise to never purchase one of her books ever again. Anyone that wishes harm to another human being should watch out. What's that saying " what goes around comes around". American rights of free speech is one thing, but to want a person dead without the need to protect your personal body or family. And there is no misinterpetaion of what she said. And to those that praise Ann's comments, let us hope you never have to face the axe of a terror attack.
I want to preface this by saying that although I am a North Carolinian, I am not necessarily camping in John Edward's arena as of yet.  However, I do applaud Elizabeth Edwards for standing up to the likes of Ann Coulter. I have NO respect for someone who makes a living using cynicism, criticism, and mud-slinging. She sat in front of the camera on "Hardball" with a big smirk on her face, which indicated to me she got exactly what she wanted.  And what's with the hair-swinging?  Was she flirting with someone?  In my opinion, Coulter needs to find a REAL job instead of making her money at other people's expenses (sound familiar??).
I argue that Ann is actually a liberal.  What better way to get support for a group than to stand venomosly against it.  The hate speach she generates makes these groups appear as victims and everyone wants to help those that are victimized.  Ann is a true savant at using the system and the literal and linear thinking of most staunch conservatives to help exectute her liberal agenda.
Ann Coultere calls it as she sees it.  She is not interested in being "politically correct".  She was right on the money about the vultures who benefitted from their loved ones's deaths at ground zero and she is right on about Edwards being a big phoney. Every time we have a huge catastrophe the relatives parade and demand retribution and money.  The government is NOT responsible for compensating victims!!!   They thought they were better and more important than any other person that has lost a loved one wrongly.  Zillions of people lose loved ones and are not compensated a dime.  I find it disgusting those relatives were compensated by our tax dollars. And John Edwards uses his son's death to get sympathy. Hurray for Ann Coulter for having a backbone.
Wow!! I too believe that Ms. Coulter could be a bit more refined in her speeches, articles, and defense. I do believe in our right to free speech and she has demonstrated that along with all of you other great people. Whether you agree with Ms. Coulter or the Edwards campaign, isn't it great to see that people are exercising their right to speech? I hope that all you fine people will follow up on your beliefs when it comes time for election.
Ann Coulter is no better than Howard Stern.  She is loud, obnoxious and offensive and is getting exactly what she wants, all attention on her.  We have a mess in the White House and the importance of this upcoming election has been reduced to personal attacks as well as the personal opinions of an idiot.  Ms. Coulter, if you truly have all the answers as you claim to, why not run for office yourself?  Yes, I agree with you, you lack the class, confidence, intelligence and spiritual awarness to win.
