On Libby: Republican inconsistency and the true tragedy

Posted: Monday, July 02, 2007 9:53 PM by Sam Go

Chris Matthews, who was taking the day off today, called into the 7 p.m. edition of Hardball to react to the breaking news of Pres. Bush commuting Scooter Libby's 2 1/2 year-prison sentence.

“I’m not surprised,” he told MSNBC’s David Shuster.

“I’ve been saying for weeks I thought the president would pardon him. I didn’t think he would do this ‘three quarters of the way’ pardon which would leave him with a fine to pay and being disbarred.”

For Matthews, Libby was “at the concourse of intelligence, at the concourse of case for war, and apparently also at the concourse of the leaking operation.”

“Libby is in trouble for being part of a team – part of a team whose purpose it was to sell the case for war and to perhaps make sure that someone who was out to debunk the case -- Ambassador Joseph Wilson --  wasn’t credible. So everything he’s been accused of and found guilty of were efforts that were very much a part of the administration’s political purpose.”

“The irony in this case is that the president said he would 'deal with anyone who leaked,' and now his way of dealing with Scooter Libby is to pardon him.”

“For him to say that the penalty is 'excessive' may well be true, but it was the same crime that President Bill Clinton was impeached for by a Republican House of Representatives and in which 50 U.S. senators, Republicans, voted to remove him from office. So Republicans as a party thought perjury and obstruction of justice were sufficient to remove a twice-elected president from office. And now the president is saying that 30 months in prison is an excessive penalty for the same exact crime. It’s inconsistent.”

Matthews considers the human aspects of all this. “He was President Bush's political ally, so I certainly understand that he sympathizes with Scooter Libby and his family. The human aspects of this are totally understandable. And it may well be that Libby has suffered enough already and will suffer in the future... you could argue that the punishment has been exacted without Libby going to prison.”

Matthews thinks this decision wasn’t exactly a proud moment for the White House. “If the president were proud of his decision (and that’s his decision and his right to make it), he would have held something at the Rose Garden.  He would have said it in person and not issued a statement on paper. He wouldn’t have done it on a 4th of July holiday period with everyone out of town. He would have done it with some flourish and some pride.”

But for the Hardball host, the misinformation on the case for war – and that legacy – lives on. “The 25 to 30 percent of the country who believe in the president’s performance are largely conservatives, and they believe in the war. It’s frightening that 40 percent still think that Iraq attacked us on 9/11. Twenty percent of the country still believes there were weapons of mass destruction discovered by our military forces when they went into Iraq."

"The misinformation in this country remains after all these years -- because of the propaganda before we went to war. The results are still in effect. We’re still under a misunderstanding of the nature of why we went to war. That’s the tragedy here.”

Chris Matthews will provide more analysis on 'Today' Tuesday.

How can the Bush-apologist say "Well Clinton did it." so therefore it's o.k., when they think of themselves as being above the democrats.

When Clinton did it, it was wrong..so have honesty to say that Bush is wrong also.
It seems theres a missunderstanding about Bush here and what he does.Bush is just the presadent he is no longer the American presadent. We are Americans not by birth or by living in the U.S. we are Americans because of our constition. That was what seperated us from other nations.Bush has managed to rip that paper to shreds all in the name of natinal security. He scared the crud out of American people to pass every law he wanted and threw our rights away time and time again. He used terror to over throw us.He is the # 1 terrist we should be worring about.
President Bush does not care about the people of America; he cares about his group of people and keeping maximum power over the people and the world.
He has betrayed the people of America by lying about the need to go to war in Iraq.  He did not take care of the poor who were left homeless after Hurricane Katrina.
By commuting Libby's sentence, Bush has revealed to the world that justice is not his main concern; those who violate the law to protect him and his close group of friends will be protected from the consequences.  The rest of us must face the consequences if we do something wrong; why does the President think that he and his friends are above the law?
I find it sad that America's politicians and the people of America have not called for Bush's resignation.  Once it was clear that he lied about the war, he should have been charged with war crimes.  If Nixon was forced out of the Whitehouse, why hasn't Bush been asked to step down?
President Bush has continuously betrayed our trust and continues to weaken this country.  We need honest leadership, not corrupt leadership!
I listen to Consevative Radio frequently as I drive home to hear what they are saying and its fascinating to see so many of their statements and ideas parroted here and in other similar forums.  Its a shame that no matter what you think of this latest situation or your political beliefs that people seem to be losing the ability to think for themselves.
George W. Bush has once again tweaked our laws and our Constitution for his own dark interests, as well as those of his partner-in-crime, Dick Cheney, and our own Congress has stood absolutely still and let him get away with it.  How far will the representatives of the American people let this madman go, who so frighteningly resembles Adolph Hitler?  Maybe it’s time voters sweep out our Congress and start from scratch, before Bush does more tweaking and decides that the American people will no longer have the right to vote.
Wow - first time I've viewed a blog - what a bunch of polarized views.

Look, Scooter Libby committed a crime.  His life is unalterably changed for the worse for the rest of his life.  The public good has been preserved - and all who contemplate perjury should see Scooter as an example of what not to do in front of a Grand Jury.

Sewing and reaping is a universal principal - Libby sewed, he reaped.  Whom among us can say that we reap all that we sew?
the person who prosecuted libby better watch behind his back,he must have gotten cheney really angry and everyone knows  he is the dictator behind bush.what a fiasco, but do have one question? after they leave office ,can they be prosecuted for these crimes?
You know I think it is about time to put the Clinton administration behind us. What ever wrongs that was committed during President Clinton's administration has nothing to do with this travesty. In truth that strategey is nothing more than a cop out.
Well I notice that Bush is spending the July 4th at the Martinsburg Air Guard in a "not for the public" appearance. I guess he wants to lay low for a while after the Libby deal. Were all be better off after Bush is gone and out of office.
To compare Scooter's case to Clinton's case is a bit of a stretch. Clinton's impeachment arose out of a civil case brought by that floozy Paula Jones, and only after she was encouraged and supported by Repubs that were waging all-out war on Clinton.

Scooter's case arose from a crime that was committed but not prosecuted, and is similar to Martha Stewart's. In both cases, if they had simply told the truth, neither one would have been prosecuted, and any punishment would have truly been a slap on the wrist.
Setting aside the Libby Commutation for a moment, the real issue here which is disturbing in an of itself is the very fact that the President has full and unlimited powers of pardon for any and all reasons.
Why?  Presidents of both parties have demonstated amply that they do not have the wisdom to properly use this overly broad grant of power.  Time to seriously debate whether to curtail or remove this power.
Bush not only has the right to pardon, it is a Constitutional right as pointed out in Bill Clinton's statement, "My Reasons for the Pardons", Feb 18, 2001.  Bill Clinton pardoned 395 people of which were not only liars ,but thieves, smugglers, druggies counterfeiters and blackmailers.  And these were full pardons, not just clemency.  While it is not unusual for Presidents to do this, I hope those of you who express concern and sickness about this Presidents veracity, also feel the same way about W. J. Clinton.  If you were intellectually honest, you would.
What will it take for the American people to band together and call for Bush and Cheney's resignations?

Our elected representatives do not have the guts to do this.  The people need to stand up let our voices be heard.

It will take years and years to repair the damage to the United States' reputation and credibility caused by this administration.
Let's be quite honest here.  The same right wing-nuts that say that building a legal framework around our immigration problems is "amnesty" are the ones calling for "amensty" for Libby.  They have no legs to stand on anymore in either issue.

I'm also amazed that when this President was a governor never pardoned a single death row inmate or commuted one death row sentence.  Clearly death is not as excessive a punishment as 30 months in a posh prison.  Another bad decision by the "decider".
Bush supporters are unbelievably hypocritical and CORRUPT.  Their support for corruption throughout the Bush Administration is a chancre on American politics.  Corruption feeds on corruption and BUSH/CHENEY depend on the CORRUPT element they are provided by CORRUPT Americans.  Crooks stand by crooks.  When the CONGRESS gets some cajones with a huge majority of Democrats in the next election, a full house cleaning of the CORRUPT BUSH govt can begin.   WHAT A SHAME AND DISGRACE G. BUSH AND HIS SUPPORTERS BROUGHT TO THE AMERICA PEOPLE.  SHAME !
Does this mean that the next time I'm summoned for jury duty I can refuse because jury verdicts don't matter anymore?
I let out a howl of protest when I learned of the commutation by Bush. He and Cheney were probably frightened of a possible loose-lipped incarcerated Libby. The exposes wouldn't have been pretty.  The Ship-of-State is starting to leak.
Why should anyone be surprised? It is patently clear that there was never any case for a crime committed. It was politics as usual just as it was when Clinton perjured himself. The politicians are all alike. And Chris, why must you continue to question why we went to war? We all know-NOW- that we went to war for the wrong reasons. The Clintons and many others believed that he had weapons of mass distruction based on intelligece which existed prior to Bush taking office.
Bush is a shame on America!!! He constantly lies, cheats and misguides the American people and it is time for him to GO!!Impeach Bush Now!!!! He is bringing this county down. All the good that Clinton did with foriegn relations has been thrown out the window. All the hard work our founding fathers set up thru the constitution is being thrown out the window! Help us Congress...do your job!!!
The biggest winners? Obviously, Scooter Libby and Dick Cheney who will go on smirking and doing his underhanded business. The biggest loser? Fred Thompson, who publicly supported the comutation and can say goodbye to his presidential bid. Watch his poll numbers drop dramatically now.
I spent over 30 years of my life in the military defending this nation. What an outrage for the American people. Bush should be impeached and Cheney(the real person behind all of this)should go to jail.
Sadly, the president's decision to partially pardon Mr. Libby just reinforces what everyone already knows: if you have money and/or power, you get justice.  Everyone else gets screwed.  Thank God this whole group of Constitution bashers will be out of office in 18 months.
The argument that Scooter should be pardoned because no one has been convicted in the main investigation -- whether the outing of Valerie Plame was illegal -- is unbelievable. Fitzgerald himself has said that the obstruction of justice by Libby made it impossible for them to determine whether the leak itself violated the law.

So, lie and conceal to stall an investigation, then when the investigation stalls, argue that the liar should go free because nothing came of the investigation. Sheesh.
Let's get this straight, it was NOT Libby who leaked the information, but Richard Armitage.  He is the one who should have been thrown under the rug!  I agree with what Bush has done, but feel he should have pardoned him completely!
The WORST PRESIDENT EVER, now is in the running for the MOST CORRUPT ever too. We all know Libby lied to protect Bush and Cheney, now Bush protects his own behind for the rest of his presidency and ultimately probably pardons the liar in Dec. 2008. I just want to thank all the idiots who voted for this incompetent frat boy 7 years ago, when there was a much better Republican alternative.
The Libby commutation violates every principle of American fairness and balance and was obviously done to prevent Scooter from actually telling the truth about the illegal activities of Cheyney and Bush. Anyone who suppports Bush's decision is obviously a corrupt facist at heart.
The President has the right to pardon or commute any citizen's sentence.  That right should be taken seriously. In the past is has not been ( Mr.Clinton' pardon of Mr. Rich and others; The current President's pardon for Iran Contrs figures as examples). In this case the commutation was done not at the end of the Presidency. This episode involved felony convictions by a senior official in the President's inner circle. This should of caused this  President pause to not act. The argument that the sentence was harsh is a spacious one from a President who has reluctant to pardon convicted felon's in Texas when he was Govenor  For an adminsitration incompetent and corrupt ,in my view, this provides a fitting chapter in their legacy.
"Libby's jail sentence is unwarranted when compared to Clinton's You folks just play politics with all this nonsense, and thereby weaken the society's faith in the entire system." The point is, my dear Dee, that conservatives, if they'd had their way WOULD have removed Clinton from office---WOULD have sent him to jail. But NOW---in THIS case, with one of THIER OWN---the rules should be different. It's too "harsh." So get over your double-standards. And for goodness sake, almost 8 years later you people STILL invoke the name of Bill Clinton for every whiny, faux-problem in America. If you hated him as much as you claim, you'd let his name and reputation vanish in the woodwork. But then you'd only have our own ideas and performance to talk about. And we can all plainly see why you wouldn't want that.
The abuse of power is staggering.  They lied to take us to war and when someone suggested the lies weren't true they outed his wife who was working in the service of our country. Then they lied about it.  I agree Libby was the fall guy - as far as I can see Cheney should be serving time - but once again they thumb their noses at the American people.

I have lived through a lot of presidents and some I liked a lot better than others but never have I seen such arrogance and corruption.  Such shame to the nation.
The absolute truth of the matter is Bush 41 had to do what he did, or risk Libby putting all out on the table...everything.  Not to worry, Libby will do a tell all in about 10 years.
This pardon by Bush shows that criminals stick together. Bush says one thing and does whatever.  I will never understand why the American people voted for this guy, twice!
Is anyone really surprised at this?  I would have been surprised if he hadn't given the patterns of his presidential behavior.  Why would Bush let anyone in his administration suffer for having done their jobs?  I, too, would have felt guilty at letting a staffer take the rap for others.

I do hope we pressure presidential candidates in advance about how they view the principles of an open government.  How can democracy work if it is closed to its citizens, to public scrutiny?

Is anyone really surprised by this action?  It was as inevitable as the sun coming up in the morning. The only surprise is that Bush tried to maintain a semblance of justice by letting the conviction stand and he will deal with the pardon at a later date.  It shocks me that he has this shred of regard for how his actions are perceived - that is the only surprise here.
I don't get it: Bill Clinton fired all 93 Federal Prosecutors in one fell swoop, without repercussion...and he pardoned over a hundred criminals, many of which assisted him and took the fall for him in the Whitewater scandal, and no one freaked out..and those who said nothing the are crying like babies now...No wonder congressional approval ratings are the lowest in American history. I, for one, will vote more carefully next time.
I think President Bush only went so far as a commutting of Libby's sentence, is so he could test the waters. Given the responses I have seen I would have to say the water is pretty hot. If the President is going to follow thru with a full pardon he should wait untill after the 08 elections.
I don't understand - a President is impeached for the same "crime" that the Republicans now call "not a crime" - even though a jury found Libby guillty!!  Please, no wonder Americans are disgusted with our government - they are all corrupt and amoral.  Vote them all out.
George Bush, Dick Cheney and their cronies have demonstrated, yet again, that they believe they are above the law.  The whole crew should go to jail.
It was only a matter of time before Bush pardoned Libby.  Since he (Libby) was the fall guy for Cheney its always Cheney who calls the shots (no pun intended), and made the pardon decision when Libby was convicted. Cheney and Rove run the political show for Bush. This administration is the worst in the history of the US.
I think this is great news and a start to hopefully being fully exonerated for this supposed crime. To my unlawyered mind freedom of speech means exactly that. We have the right to lie and obstruct investigations by our words.
I find it interesting that so many thoughts I had about the infamous twosome in the white house are also held by others. In particular reference to the dictators of the
30's in Europe. I once thought Nixon was the worst in our country's history but he was benign compared to the present dictators. I don't they should be given honorable discharges in 2008. Impeach them now.
Cheney is a very smart man! He can run the country from the back-ground. It is a shame he hasn't put his talents to use to better our Country, and the American people. He has to be tired at the end of the day, from pulling Bush's strings. God help our people and our country!
Why don't those bunch of whiners in Congress get up the political will to do what needs to be done---impeach Bush and Cheney?  This corrupt, arrogant, and power hungry duo have more than enough evidence against them.  They and their neo-con cronies have done massive damage to this country with the clock still ticking till January, 2009.  Look for these guys to scare the nation with the non-existent terrorist plots and threats during the coming election year.  It worked in 2004 and it is the only way to guarantee more of the same for the next 4 or 8 years.  God forbid!
The Libby Case is political motivated. President Bush is hiding behind his cronies and allowed to do unjustice to the American people. He was put into to office to run this country the best he could. Without influence from other people to judge what is right or wrong.
When our president and his goons are above the law, it's time to start thinking about moving to another country...just keep your fingers crossed that mr. president doesn't invade it.
It will take a generation for the rest of the world to have the respect it once had for America. Your Founding Fathers of the Constitution must be turning in their graves.
You didn't need to be Nostradamus to see this coming. Anyone that has watched Bush and his bunch, knew old Scooter was not going to do any time in prison. What do you expect,  America not only voted this clown into office, you relected him. Next foregone conclusion,  watch how the Republicans  try to shift the blame for their messes onto the Democrats before November 2008.
Just another notch on Bush's "abuse of power" belt. The man really has no idea about consequences....and those that DO don't care. Thank GOD Chris and Keith are keeping the irons in the fire and not letting these sinester characters screw us blindly.
George Bush is the biggest embarrassment to the American    Presidency. Republicans should hide in shame. Your real leaders, rush limbough, slut coulter, and any one else one the fox news network need to put their heads in the sand. Wow this really stinks and makes good Americans like myself bow my head in shame. Please, someone with the appropriate knowhow start the impeachment proceedings as soon as possible, and son't let this Police action in the middle East stop you!!
I just can't understand why we don't impeach the President and Vice-president.  I just can't believe they don't have enuf evidence even with the White House not cooperating with Congress.
I am truly saddened for the state of what used to be the world's leading democracy. This administration's arrogance and intolerance of anyone or anything that gets in the way of their power grabs has completely undermined our Constitution and set a frightening precedent for future administrations to abuse the system and undermine democracy. I can only pray, God help the United States of America...
