Highlights of Michael Moore on Hardball Plaza

Posted: Monday, July 23, 2007 11:23 PM by Hardball

On Monday, we played Hardball with the toughest kid on the block, Michael Moore. The Oscar-winning filmmaker Mabout the '08 presidential field and his documentary "Sicko," which highlighted criticism of American health care.

On Feingold wanting to censure the president
CHRIS MATTHEWS:  (U.S. Senator) Russ Feingold wants to censure the president, the vice president and other administration officials for the way in which they talked us into war in Iraq.  What do you make of it?  Where do you stand on that kind of thing?

MICHAEL MOORE:  Good idea.  I think it‘s something, though, that actually, they should be lucky just to get censured.  Personally, I‘d like to see a perp walk coming out of the West Wing of the White House.

MATTHEWS:  Do you think they‘re guilty of war crimes?

MOORE:  Absolutely.

MATTHEWS:  Name them.

MOORE:  Lying to go to war.  Start with that one.  Making up something, tricking up the evidence for war in order to take us into a war that‘s cost us over 3,600 soldiers‘ lives and countless Iraqi lives.  History will not be kind to Mr. Bush for what he's done.

Presidential candidate with the best health plan
AUDIENCE MEMBER:  Hi.  My name Karen McCullen (ph), and I‘m from Philadelphia.  My question is, which presidential candidate do you think has the best health care plan so far?

MOORE:  Well, I would say probably Dennis Kucinich has the best plan in terms of—because he supports HR 676, which is the John Conyers bill that‘s before Congress now to create a National Health Insurance Act.  And so the others so far haven‘t supported it, and it‘s one thing I think people can do is insist that the presidential candidates get behind HR 676, the U.S. National Health Insurance Act.  And I think that would be a good indication of whether or not they truly support universal health care for everyone and remove profit from our health care system.

Moore offers Americans health care advice
MATTHEWS:  There‘s probably a half-million people watching right now at different times today.  And I want you to give them advice.

MOORE:  Yes.

MATTHEWS:  If they‘re right now having a problem with their HMO, and they‘re not getting treatment for something they think is important, is it best to call their congressperson?  What do they do to make sure the kind of thing that happened in your movie happens to them?

MOORE:  Actually, what I tell people is, if you‘re having trouble right now with your insurance company, and they won‘t pay for something, go ahead and use my name, just say...

MATTHEWS:  Say, Michael Moore has been talking to me?

MOORE:  Say that I‘m coming, that you have talked to me personally.  You have my permission to do that.   In fact, at the end of this week, on my Web site, I‘m going have a little like “Sicko” insurance card you can download, print it out, laminate it, and take it in and say that you‘re now part of my team, and that we‘re going to put you on the DVD if you don‘t help my child.

And, so, I give blanket permission to anybody who wants to do that.  Carry your “Sicko” card with you.  And, actually, I got this idea because a number of people have already gone ahead and done it.

MATTHEWS:  The guy did it in the movie.

MOORE:  He did it in the movie.

MATTHEWS:  Yes.  Without your permission.

MOORE:  And he just said, "Michael Moore is coming. " I never met the guy...  the guy just went ahead and said, Michael Moore is doing this film.  And like a week later, the insurance company said, OK, we will pay for your daughter‘s ear operation.

MATTHEWS:  God, there‘s nothing like a little blackmail.

(LAUGHTER)

On criticism from '08 hopeful Mike Huckabee
MATTHEWS:  You have earned yourself an enemy.  This is Huckabee, the former governor, Mike Huckabee.  He‘s running for president.

MOORE:  He‘s the guy that lost all that weight.

MATTHEWS:  He‘s decided to come after you.  He said “Frankly,”—don‘t you love it when politicians say that?  Like other times they‘re not being frank, right?  “Frankly, Michael Moore is an example of why the health care system costs so much in this country.  He clearly is one of the reasons that we have a very expensive system.  I know that from my own personal experience.”

He‘s identifying with you.Huckabee, who lost more than 110 pounds and became an avid runner after he was diagnosed with diabetes.  Your response sir?

MOORE:  First of all, there‘s nothing worse than a reformed smoker or twinkie eater.  They all become scolds don't they?

MATTHEWS:  I agree with you that attitude.  Don‘t preach, do.  But he‘s knocking you.  He‘s saying you‘re overweight.

MOORE:  He said I was over weight?

MATTHEWS:  I think that was the implication here.  Isn‘t that—to be honest, you talk about France, and I was just over there a while ago.  I was over in Italy for the pope‘s funeral.  I have to tell you, one of the amazing things about continental Europe, the people all look great.  Everybody is in good shape.  Is it because they walk a lot?  Is it because they don‘t eat the junk we eat.

MOORE:  You were there.  You notice they smoke more than we do.  They drink a lot.

MATTHEWS:  Why do they look so good?  Why are they so thin?  I thought it was walking.

MOORE:  Partly yes, it is that.  I was halfway through making this film and I said to myself, look, "Mike, there‘s something hypocritical here about your making a health care and you‘re not taking care of your own health."  So near the end of the film, I started going for a walk every day, started eating these things that are called fruits and vegetables.

In three months, I lost 30 pounds.  I read this book... and so now I‘m on the good path.  If you want to avoid this broken health care system, one of the ways to do that is to take better care of yourself.

A challenge to candidates
MATTHEWS:  Michael, you‘ve got a challenge I hear.  You told me during the break [you have a challenge[ with these guys running for president.

MOORE:  We‘re going to challenge each of the presidential candidates to take the Senator Sherrod Brown pledge.  He‘s the senator form Ohio.  And he‘s the only senator who has said that he will not take his government financed health care—he will not use it until every single American is covered with health insurance.

So I would like each of the presidential candidates to take that same pledge that Senator Sherrod Brown—

MATTHEWS:  Where will you administer this oath?  Where‘s this going to happen?  They‘re not going to do it, of course.

MOORE:  You don‘t think so?

MATTHEWS:  No, because they expect to lose—most of them—and they expect to serve in the Congress for the rest of their lives, and they need the health insurance.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE:  Ron Paul already did it.

MATTHEWS:  Ron Paul‘s leaving the Congress.

Final words on being "extreme"
AUDIENCE MEMBER:  Hi, Mr. Moore.  My name is Nicole Irwin.  I‘m from Kentucky.  Many people view you as an extremist.  And because they are so focused on this radical perception, it seems like they focus more on you than the issue.  Do you feel like this is a problem.  And if so, how do you fix it?

MOORE:  Yes, I‘ve always wondered why some people feel that way, because I have made there or four films.  I made a film because I didn‘t like the fact that General Motors was laying off so many people in my home town.  I made another film about school shootings because I didn‘t think school shootings were a good idea.

Then I made a film—and I said on the Oscar stage at the beginning of the war that we‘re being led to war for fictitious reasons.  That upset a lot of people, but I told the truth.  And now I‘m saying that I think all Americans should be able to see a doctor and not have to worry about paying for it.

What in any of those things sounds radical or extremist?  It‘s an odd thing.  I know a lot of Republicans and conservatives feel this way.  But I really want to reach out to them.  I do in this film, as you saw.

MATTHEWS:  I think you‘re tougher on the Republicans than the Democrats.  I think you give the Democrats a free ride in that movie. Because a lot of guys, back when Hillary tried to pass that health care, it was a Democrat that got in the way of the whole thing.

MOORE:  Look, the Republicans do take more money.  They do. They are more in bed with corporate America.

MATTHEWS:  By the way, the Democrats gave president his majority on the war, you know.  People like Hillary and Biden and Edwards, they all voted for the war authorization.  They play ball.

MOORE:  Everyone knows that.  Democrats running for president who voted for the war are going to have a very difficult time getting through the primary.

Mr. Moore's positions are unclear.  First, he advocates a health care system that has been shown to be a failure.  Next he wants to take profit out of the system.  The entertainment industry is no different.  People choose to view what they want.  Should the government regulate that industry so Mr. Moore does not profit from his ventures?  It's ironic Mr. Moore takes advantage of capitalism in his industry yet tries to foist the opposite on another?

Do we need to replay all the quotes from Democrats that were also convinced the pre-war intelligence indicated Iraq has WMDs?  Why doesn't Mr. Moore direct his hatred towards these individuals?

This was one of the best hardballs in months!
This affects every American. I am a Canadian living in the states with healthcare for the past 10 years. I've been on both sides of the fence and I can tell you, Micheal Moore speaks the truth. The mass media is not telling the whole truth.
I believe ALL Americans should be given the SAME health care we GIVE our ELECTED officials....period
Men like micheal moore are essential for a free society to remain that way. His films make us ask questions about what our leaders and our government do. Chris matthews is the best journalist in the business at cutting through the political spin and getting to the real issues. Sorry o'reily, hardball is the true spin free zone.
Mister Moore is an American to be proud of.
not too many of those left
I think most people are searching for meaningful, common sense answers to our problems.  Michael Moore's opinions seem rooted in common sense and are fact based.  His many detractors conversely seem to depend on ideology based arguments with few real facts to back up their opinions.  Our country seems to be at a real tipping point (to disaster) caused by ideolgy based thinkers.  Its time to get back to reality.
I loved the segment on Hardball with Michael Moore.  He has a lot of courage to stand up for the American people.  Some Americans are so off base...they actually question Michael as to WHY they should have Universal Health Care, Dental and Vision Care???  That is how far we have been brainwashed.  The average know it all conservative feels everyone should take care of themselves...."Sicko" proves that even if you attempt to take care of yourself...the HMO's and the system works against you.  Wake Up Americans....this wins my support John Conyers Bill HR 676 for Universal Health Care, Vision and Dental for ALL Americans.  Like Michael Moore said.."What would Jesus do?"   We have to learn that taking care of all of us is the best for everyone.  The conservative line of taking care only of yourself is great if you have coverage...but not kind to your fellow man.  If that is Ok with Rep Conservatives..then let them have that system...the rest of us want something complete and for ALL.  I always thought that was what was great about America...the fact that we cared about people...not just profits.  Let's prove it now.  Thank you, Michael Mooore.
This was a great interview.  I think the fundamental issue is getting our politicians and leaders to view health care for all people as a human right - not a benefit you might be lucky enough to get.  Moore made this point in the interview.  I hope that Hardball will continue to have this healthcare dialogue right up to the election and really press each candidate about their views and solutions for our health care crisis in America.
Thanks Michael for standing up for all of us and fighting so hard.  We are with you all the way.  I want you to know that we appreicate your heroism.  Keep on keeping on.  We're with you.
Mr. Moore may come across as one-sided to some, but if you've seen his movies, every frame is the truth.  It has been a travisty for the people in Flint, MI., and nothing has improved.  Mr. Moore was right on the money.  Columbine was a tragedy of immessurable proportion, and yet guns are still readily available.  Why is the NRA more powerful in this country than the loss of human lives?  Why aren't we shaken to our very core to change the gun laws?  The President has helped to make the United States a global laughing stock, and it saddens me to no end, that over 3600 Americans have died.  As Malcolm X said, "We have been hoodwinked, we have been bamboozled."  As far as Iraq is concerned, we were sold a bill of goods.  Sad.  Again, Mr. Moore has been right on.  When I hear people vehimently criticize Mr. Moore, I wonder to myself, "what are they afraid of?"  Thank you, Michael, for your continued diligence.
Michael Moore tells the truth and the Bush administration does not like it. This Administration has committed more crimes than all the crimminals in jail because they have adversly affected all American citizens. I saw Ferenhight 911 and Sicko. I know Sicko is right on the money, which leads me to think there may be more to his other movie than I thought.
I hope Michael Moore sent a wake-up call to the do-nothing Congress, we need major changes in all human care areas and a good starting point is a unified electorate determined to use the ballot box to good ends. I was originaly born in Belgium and I can assure you that the health care system there is quite adequate and covers everyone.
I'm all for universal healthcare, however, we cannot instantly have it! The hospitals, doctors etc. are already overburdened. We waited 8 hours for a heartattack patient to be admitted. Why? Many reasons were given ..all different, depending on who was asked. The solution is on the support staff and there just isn't enough even with our present system let alone the instant addition of 45 million more.
Free Health Care???  The reason why none of the presidential hopefuls will not back universal healthcare is b/c your taxes will be 50-60% of your paycheck!  Tell me one person who was voted into office with an agenda that will raise taxes.  READ MY LIPS come to mind anyone?
Moore shines the light on many of our societal problems with a harsh focus. He's right in so doing. He does a great job! However, many of the problems and the resulting injuries are self inflicted by that same societal group. How many of us have diversified portfolios with an interest in what we purpose to condemn? HMO's, illegal immigration, cheap foreign labor, etc.... What's in your wallet?
Kudos to Michael Moore for his courage in making the films he does.  He brings to our attention the ills of American society to make us all think, and hopefully, act.  Why any average American would be fearful of universal health care is beyond my understanding. Again, great job.  To Chris Matthews:  Keep it coming.  We need more discussions just like this one.
It's a shame that we even have to discuss health care in the weathiest contry on earth. Of course we desperatly neeeeed it.
Michael Moore is bringing US Healthcare into the spotlight and I couldn't be more pleased. Keeping up with health care premiums has stripped away my savings, vacations and has made it hard to even eat. No one that works everyday and contributes to this economy should be forced into poverty by health issues. Thank you Michael Moore for making this movie.
Universal healthcare is simply "the right thing to do." Have Americans forgotten that once familiar guiding value? Thank you, Michael Moore, for reminding us....again!
Hey, I don't have healthcare, but taxes are killing me already. It's either pay for it myself, or pay the government to pay for it for me and for everyone else who can't afford it. I prefer the choice, and since america was founded on the concept of liberty, I think keeping the choice is the right thing to do.
"The reason why none of the presidential hopefuls will not back universal healthcare is b/c your taxes will be 50-60% of your paycheck!"

Hahaha. Hyperbolize much? Or just plain plumb loco?
To the person who was crying about how much our taxes will be raised if we have universal health care.  We are already paying for it.  Ross Pero pointed out a decade ago that we are already paying Cadillac prices and getting less than Cuban service.  This is how places like Walmart are getting over.  Every time one of their employees goes to the emergency room with no health care coverage, we all pay for it.  Still think that cheap Chinese made T-shirt is still a bargin.
It's the same thing with the illegal immigrant issue.  When the employers don't pay, the rest of us do.  Why not level the playing field and let some of these other people pay thier fair share?
"50-60% of your paycheck"?
Wow!  I'd love to see the data that gave you those numbers.  Otherwise I might think you were inflating the facts in order to frighten us.
If I were to relate all of the horrible experiences my family has had with doctors and hospitals over the years, you'd have me committed to a loony bin as a crackpot, but believe me, I had seen and heard even worse inhumane treatment, or rather lack thereof, of many, many other poor people in my lifetime. It is a miracle that I have NOT lost my mind over the heartless and merciless treatment my family and others have been subjected or kept from receiving over half a CENTURY NOW! Thank you, Michael Moore for daring to care, for daring to challenge the powers that be, the heartless animals who deny the poor medical care all in the name of money and profits!
Michael Moore is the Paul Revere of our generation. I wonder how GWB will be remembered. As a practicing physician, I wish we had medicare for everyone, enough with these crazy quilt HMO plans and the sadistic drug benefits
