In the dog days of summer, a horserace heats up

Posted: Tuesday, August 14, 2007 4:34 PM by Hardball

In a new segment, "Hardball" host Chris Matthews gives his take on the day's top headlines.

Hillary Clinton – all sealed up?
Hillary Clinton is running for president based on her service and experience in the Clinton White House. But how can we judge it if we don't have access to the records? Hillary has successfully sealed off millions of pages from her time in the White House, denying reporters and historians’ information about meetings she held and attended. After eight years of a secretive Bush administration, will voters go for a candidate who won't put her cards on the table?

Elizabeth Edwards attacks again
Elizabeth Edwards goes on the attack again, this time targeting Barack Obama. In an interview with the Progressive Magazine, Elizabeth referred to Obama as "holier-than-thou" when it comes to the war and went after the lack of guts in the Clinton health care plan and the 15 million people left out of the Obama health care plan.

New poll favors Giuliani
Plus, a new CBS poll out today shows Rudy Giuliani with a 20-point lead over number two Fred Thompson, who is down 7 points. The poll also shows that 46 percent of Americans believe the Iraq war is creating more terrorists; just 18 percent believe it's eliminating them.

Michelle Obama fights back
And finally, Michelle Obama again sharply condemned discussion of whether or not Barack Obama is "black enough," a question raised by the National Association of Black Journalists last week. Michelle said, "We are messing with the heads of our children by raising the question."

If "46% of Americans believe the Iraq war is creating more terrorists," why did everyone have such a hard time with Ron Paul's statement during the CNN Republican debate that we were attacked on 9/11 partially because of our constant self-serving involvement in Middle Eastern affairs?

Paul understands the danger of an intervensionist, pre-emptive war mindset, could out-debate the rest of the field on economics, is focused on strengthening the US at home, and is concerned first and foremost with individual liberty and obedience to the Constitution. Why is this man not getting more respect?

Chris, get him on Hardball and ask him some tough questions!
Chris, you underestimate Fred Thompson's virtues. First, he is taller than Ronald Reagan ..... no small accomplishment. Second, he has saggier jowls than either Bob Dole or Richard Nixon. Next, he knows as little about foreign policy as did Gerald Ford. Also, he sounds more like a talk-show host than any other Republican candidate. Last but not least, he'll rely on the same old Pentagon bureaucrats more than both Bushes did.
Skin Color should in no way have anything to do with our choice in the election.  There are a lot of idiots among us, and I would hope they come to their senses when it comes time to vote.  In view of the horrible failure the curent administration has shown us we can't afford another failure.
I'm not a fan of "Rudy" quite the opposite but I'm not suprised that the moral right overlooks his many inconsistancies.  Remember all the surveys done 4 years ago, Liberal Mass. had lower divorce, abortion etc. rates compared to the Bible belt states. Who was it made Desperate Housewives popular, the red states. Mr.G is a bully, which seems to be an admirable quality to too many people. Unfortunately they seem to equate it with strength. God help us all!
Chris, it's just one more reason i won't vote for Hillary.

I wish YOU and other tv hosts, would stop saying she's so "inevitable".
She leads in polls of DEMOCRATIC voters.
Not in the national polls. And i retain hope that the dem primary voters will realize she is not going to win the national election, and nominate someone else (ANYONE ELSE!).

All you have to do is look at any of the "comments" section on any article about her to see how far the negatives outweigh the positives.
Why don't you point that out on your show?

I have always voted Democrat, but if they nominate Hillary.
I will be staying home on election day. And that'll be the first presidential election i missed since i turned 18 in 1989.
When Bill Clinton was in office our economy was the best it could be. I hope that Hillary Clinton gets elected she is a stong women putting up wih all the comments that people say about her. She has got to be stong still married, after all the comments about her husband and the affair when he was in office.
Surely we won't have to worry about it, I seriously doubt any one in USA is stupid enough to vote for hillary
Sen. Clinton is touting her previous "Foreign Policy Accomplishments"; as First Lady (foreign policy was not one of her husband's strengths), and as a senator (voting to authorize the Iraq war). These are not exactly "accomplishments" I would consider positive. Why has she not been called on this?
You are being to hard on Hillary. I'm sure the records will show up the day after the statute of limitations expire, just like the Rose Law Firm records showed up.
As a registered Democrat, Hillary Clinton is the worst idea for president. Bush is secretive and aggressive and hardnosed, but he is stupid. Hillary is all of those things, but is extremely intelligent. And she spends tax money like it's her own and takes a large portion of businees monies to fatten her coffers and in return, leads the Dems in earmarking. We need a president who does none of the above. It is killing our Democracy.
Why won't the media stop questioning the "blackness" of Barack Obama?  I think he eloquently answered this non-issue in a recent debate.  The American people desperately want a President who will deal with the problems of this country. Senator Obama cares about all Americans... Michelle Obama is quite correct to condemn such shallow discussions concerning her husband.
all we ever hear about is Elizabeth Edwards on the attack again , never John Edwards which one is running ???????????
Mrs. Edwards...you just don't get it! Barack Obama knew the Iraq war was a mistake and opposed it from the start.  Your husband voted for and supported the war.  Then when he began running for President, he changed his mind and now apologizes and regrets his vote and previous support.  Americans desperately want a President who will GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME... That is NOT your husband!!! So suck it in Elizabeth...and stop whining and making excuses about John's 3rd place in the polls... By the way, which of you is the real candidate?  Why don't we hear from your husband himself?
What would you expect from her?  How she is leading in the polls is mind-blowing.  She won't give straight answers, provide records of her time in the Whitehouse, or offer her thesis from college days. What is she hiding or running from?  We can't afford 4 more years of deceit, arrogance and dishonesty.
48% believe we are creating terrorists?  Well that tells us the actual percentage of people the Democrats and their media machine, AKA MSNBC, Washingon Post, etc. can fool all of the time.

That this nation is even considering this collection of clowns as candidates for President is shameful....one man who is ignored by the Media but has FAR MORE integrity and principle is Ron Paul of Texas....
Chris, you have to love Michelle Obama. She sticks up for her husband in response to this ridiculous press hype over the, "Is Barack black enough" mularkey. Though Barack was never really raised in a traditional "black" community, Obama turned down high paying jobs out of college to be a community organizer in an impoverished black area.
As for Obama's chances in the primary, I feel he has a great shot. If Gore decides not to run, or Edwards falter, Their supporters may take the "Anybody but Hillary" vote and take Barack.

A Clinton not wanting to have people digging into there past? What news! It was okay for Hillary to use the FBI to get information on others. Just another reason.
Is Elizabeth running for President or John?
Is there a real leader out there???
Why do people ask is Obama black enough, the man is running for President of a country that is suppose to represent the melting pot of Freedom. And by all standards he is a part of that Melting pot. Now the real question is are the other canidates TOO WHITE...
You gotta love those Democrats.  They take full control of Congress, and within 6 months their approval rating is lower than President Bush.  But the real kicker is that they are going to nominate an unelectable person to be the democratic candidate for president.  It doesn't matter who the Republicans nominate - Hillary will never win the election.  What a hoot!
The question regarding Ms. Clinton's sealed records is not whether she will unseal them, rather, it is will the press (Mr. Matthews) make a public stink about it until they get unsealed.  If this were another Bush, I'm quite sure the media would begin a public arm-twisting campaign until someone cried "uncle".  Maybe its time for the Republicans to open an invesitgation against Hillary now so if she gets elected they can have her impeached and removed faster!
Come on folks, do you really think the war has created more terrorists? 9/11 happened well before the war in Iraq. These "buggers" have always been there, and were sucessful the 2nd time in downing the twin towers. That's right people, the 2nd time - go back to the Clinton presidency in the early 90's when the same group tried blowing up the twin towers with a car/truck bomb. Bill what happened in the ensuing years to prevent the 2nd attack. Hillary, weren't you there too? because you tout being involved in the presidency when Bill was in office. Of course, the Democratic congression leader Harry "Cut and Run" Reid provides a pretty good picture  of the main stream Democratic view on the war on terrorism.
Somebody out there please tell me what it means to be "Black Enough" or "Too White"?
"When Bill Clinton was in office our economy was the best it could be."  Wow, are you seriously that naive?  If you think the dot com bubble was the "best" our economy could be, then I would REALLY hate to see your credit card balances.  Living the high life, are you?
Re: Bobby Lurker's message... "I seriously doubt any one in USA is stupid enough to vote for hillary".

I disagree.  There were enough stupid people to put  Dick Cheney in power twice! oh.. and in case you have not noticed, look at who also is in his second term as president.  He received over 53 million stupid votes!
First of all, I can't believe the people of New York were stupid enough to elect Clinton to the senate.  Surely, the democratic party as a whole, is not going to put her on the ballot for the presidential election.  She is as devious as they come and can't be trusted with control of the country.  The entire list of candidates from the democratic party don't have much to offer either!  All of them are self serving.  What ever happened to the ideal of someone in political office serving the people that they represent?
I wonder who is funding Hillary and Obama? Did Rove get the Republican hacks to do it so the country will have to endure another criminal administration when the Democrats lose? This country need a President with character, intellect and diplomacy who has the best interest of all our citizens as the primary reason for his decision making. Instead we get a herd of flunkies for one special interest or another from both parties. How sad for those of us who expect our democracy to actually work the way our founding father's intended.
Hillary needs to hide her past from the voters because anyone with a single brain cell would realize she will say and do anything to get their vote. When running for Senate she touted her great plan to revitalize the economy of the upstate region of the state. Has anyone seen anyone but Hillary benifit from her election to the senate?Read her web site and you would think the consitution has changed . It state several times that Hillary has passed laws. She can not pass anything but hot air. When running for senate didnt she state" I will NOT run for president" Just more lies to get elected
You know, I just have to laugh at all of you republi-hipocrats.  You all act like Hillary has done something personal to you, like beating your dog!  After backing the worst president in our complete history, you try to spin Hillary as the Anti-Christ incarnate.  Get off your hate box everyone, open your eyes, and take some responsibility for your votes to keep W in power....the truest abuser of civil liberties and political power this nation has ever known.  When 65+% of the nation says republicans have gotten it wrong on: the war, national security, budget deficits, foreign relations, disaster relief, (do I really need to continue???), you really can't dog a person that is trying to make things better.  If you're going to complain about Hillary's decision to classify her documents while in the WH, then start looking around for all of W's missing, classified, and or lost documents on all sorts of topics.

Give all of the candidates a chance to earn their stripes before you just come out and level them off.  You just might learn a little more about the big picture because honestly, there really is no way that HIllary could ever, EVER, do as pitiful a job as W.  All of these candidates deserve a shot at expressing their views and they will over the primary sessions.  After that, one could probably assert that they have an informed idea about each candidate's views and positions.

I'm out...
EVERYBODY.......PLEASE remember that the USA is NOT a democracy......isn't now; never was; never will be.

THIS IS A REPUBLIC ......... anyone remember the Pledge of Allegiance?
All these distractions are a shameful face on our democracy.  We live in a country where black or white shouldn't matter, where running for President should be  choice based on passion and wisdom, not "handlers".  For these people our country should come first ALWAYS.  Instead of laughing at the choices we have for President at this time we should be in mourning that these are our curent "best and brightest".
Notice how all the anti-Hillary letters are from men? Women of America had better get behind a female candidate if they are wise. Angry white men from the south have run this country far too long. We have 10% women senators, supreme court justices, and CEOS. Women's wages are lower and the men in power want women imprisoned if they have an abortion after being raped. What is wrong with this picture? It hasn't been all that long ago that women could not own property and couldn't vote either. Educational opportunities were denied as were occupational opportunities. These inequities still linger today and women should seize this chance to elect a woman President. The powers that be are trying their damdest to demonize and dehumanize Hillary, but if you ladies let it happen it may be your last chance for a long time to come.
Hillary's lack of record works in her favor, with the proper media spin and lack of evidence, she will seem the stronger, more electable candidate. Which works in the Republican favor; while America is ready to elect a minority president (women, black, spanish or otherwise) that first minority president will be a conservative.
If you're going to question whether Obama is black enough, then you should question whether Hillary is woman enough, or whether Edwards is wimp enough.
I find it incredulous that Hillary, or should I really say Shrillary, is saying middle to low income Americans are invisible to Bush. She also includes returning soldiers who are in need of medical care in that group. I ask you, what has she done or accomplished...name me one thing...that we can base electing her president on? She's as phony as a three dollar bill!
Wow to all of this. Hillary is no surprise. She is NOT trustowrthy. AS far as the 48% and the previous comment on that... is it possible that the 48% is right? Look, I tend towards conservative, but is it always the "Other guys" who get disinformation, or could it be the right this time... If you say no then you are in denial.

Finally... People who cry racism in this case are the worst offenders. Do you want the color of skin to be a non issue? It would be nice if all the "colors mixed together to gray" I could care less what color a man is. Sure his heritage has an impact, but it should be a source of pride for each of us where we come from, and a cause for celebration in others. I may or may not agree with Obama's views, But I am glad for his voice. Part of what makes this country so awesome is it's diversity!

Now I hope we can get off the label affixing crap and just think.... Joie to all!
Randal I am saddend being a democrat but have to agree with you.I must also say, though, that it demonstrates that the democrats recognize that this country is not just made up of white, suited, men.
Clinton is a liar. Didn't she say she is not going to run in 2008 many times??????

Like husband like wife!!!
Obama versus Clinton? Didn't you notice that Obama sounds like George Bush. He thinks,he could be a commander in-chief with less than 2 years as senator. Be serious! I don't want anybody as my president who's inexperienced. If you do, go ahead vote for Obama. He's gonna be like Jesse Jacksson, never be nominated for president. I like my chances with Sen. Hillary Clinton, and I hope she'll make history as the first woman to be Commander In-Chief.
If the people of the U.S. have ignorant beliefs about what is happening in this country and throughout the world (i.e.,We are losing in Iraq and creating more terrorists), real leaders will never get elected by the popular vote. Only the candidates that pander to the uninformed and believe the media hype will get the money and have a chance of getting elected. It seems to be a popularity contest based on ignorant and uneducated beliefs. An uninformed public deserves the government that the media is feeding them.

Someone made a comment that the only negative comments were coming from men and that women need to get behind Hillary.  Well, I'm a female liberal Democrat from a liberal city and I DO NOT want Hillary. She's nothing more than George Bush in a skirt...um, pantsuit.  It would be a huge mistake to elect her. I want a female president someday soon, but I'm not voting for just ANY woman...I want the RIGHT woman. And I'm willing to wait.
I would like to comment on the economy topic during the Clinton term as being the best while he was President.  Bill Clinton had nothing to do with the economy during his terms because of the Year 2000 issues.  Companies spent millions of dollars upgrading everything from computers, software, to elevator parts for Year 2000.  This spending fueled the economy for several years during his terms.  Bill Clinton had nothing to do with it the calendar did.
Let's vote all the politicians presently in office out and start over. The war, healthcare, immigration, gas prices and other problems in this country continue to exist. Try something Washington. We are sick of your whining, your $2 haircuts and your constant bickering and criticism of each other's parties. Quit campaigning and start doing something constructive.
I am a life long Democrat who will NOT VOTE FOR HILLARY. If for no other reason than we don't need another 8 polariziing years. We need a consensous maker-a moderate, middle of the road type who's not beholden to either party. Bloomberg has the right idea-maybe Edwards with Obama as vice president. But not Hillary-it'll be GW all over again except from the right. Canada anyone?
1) if Hillary wants to be the anti-Bush she should open her records to the public in a sign of good faith that transparency should and will return to government.

2) I think it's smart for the Edwards campaign to let Elizabeth be their attack dog. I mean who is going to go after a woman who has cancer?

3) Anyone can use a poll to say just about anything. It doesn't make it fact.

4) What I have to ask the National Association of Black Journalists is whether or not Tiger Woods is black enough.
References to the current - or any other - administration are moot in discussing Hillary as president.  She has an 8 year history in the White House that provides more than ample reasons to never cast a vote for her. Please recall Whitewater, Rose Law Firm records, denying the FBI to secure a crime scene in the Whitehouse, and the unlawful accquistion of FBI files, just for openers.  She is self-serving and dishonest - a characteristic I'm sick of in both parties.
HA! All you people are pretty laughable. You're so seduced by the media you'll believe anything they say. A very sad commentary on the intelligence of the electorate. But given that there are fewer people out there actually reading anything intelligent, what should we expect? I for one keep up with EVERYTHING from every angle so I can't blindly follow any ideology. In other words, there's no candidate of an organized party I can support 100%. But is there a candidate open to my ideas and is willing to listen, even change his/her mind? Yes, I believe there is, if he/she doesn't get seduced by the whole process before obtaining office. I for one agree with Hillary when she says, "I don't say everything I'm thinking". Some details of ideas need to be left for the candidate AFTER he/she is elected. There also needs to be a LOT more behind-closed-doors brainstorming and input from people who actually know more about what they're talking about than any politician could ever know, and understandably so. Good presidents have brain trusts: people who have worked out the details and are also willing to scrap with the President and his inner circle in order to get it right. Let's drop the media-generated bias, both extreme right and left wing), and open our minds to new ideas. Give these candidates a chance to elaborate. Quite frankly, the most lucid of all of them is the one person everyone loves to hate: Hilary. Perhaps everyone's just jealus of really smart people, especially women? Hmmm ...
