In Romney we trust?

Posted: Wednesday, August 15, 2007 4:42 PM by Cathy Finkler

In a new segment, "Hardball" host Chris Matthews gives his take on the day's top five political headlines.

Romney’s blind trust
"The Boston Globe,"Mitt Romney's hometown paper, reports that despite Romney's new pro-life policy stance, he invests personal money in two companies involved with embryonic stem cell research. Romney notes that his money is in a blind trust, but when Ted Kennedy used the "blind-trust defense" in 1994, Romney called it a "ruse." Plain and simple - a trick.

Obama under fire
Next, Mitt Romney is waging new attacks on Barack Obama for saying the U.S. is "just air-raiding villages and killing civilians."

Hugo Chavez- Dictator for life?
Next, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is presenting a plan to change his country's Constitution to allow himself to be reelected indefinitely. He may be a revolutionary, but he sure does love the perks of incumbency.

Brownback bashes Bush
Next, Republican presidential candidate Sam Brownback is slamming President Bush. He told a New Hampshire audience, We've got to walk more humbly and a lot more wisely than the current president. I really believe this next president needs to go in with knowledge on foreign policy, and not learn it on the job."

Rove’s exit interview
Finally, Karl Rove, heading off for the lecture circuit, used his shot on Rush Limbaugh today to attack Bush critics as "elite effete snobs." That sounds like an old bark from Nixon attack dog Spiro Agnew. Remember "nattering nabobs of negativism" and "pussilanimous pussyfooters" and, of course, "effete impudent snobs." I believe our own Pat Buchanan wrote some of those sugar plums.

Romney is such a snake oil salesman.  How can anyone be taken in by his lies?
Romney is a fool.  He is grandstanding to get attention.
sounds familiar somehow....oh yeah, Hillary does that.
Her pretend fight with the white house is straight out of Rove's playbook in 2000.
by the way, chris, I really would love it if you could answer or write here on hardblogger what msnbc's deal  with Hillary.
It's like you guys are all being paid by her campaign the way all of you gush over her and declare her inevitable, ect. ect.
I really wonder about it.  Why the press is so intent on shoving her down our throats.  Why you guys are so enamoured of her, are giving her a free pass, don't notice how she has no policy or substance and that her experience is as much a stawman as her supposed fights with the Bushies.
I am really curious and wish there was a dialog on this subject.  it needs to be debated with the people.
Diane, that is exactly what I've been thinking. Chris, Keith, heck you guys even have Tucker and Pat Buchanan gushing over her. You guys never seem to look deeper at her record or her hypocrisies. When Obama makes a statement that Clinton calls a mistake, you guys are all about saying Obama made a gaffe. Only to find out later that what he said was true, or that Hillary had previously said it herself and now she's flip flopping. You guys know how divisive Hillary is and for some reason you're giving her alot of free passes. Seems weird. You should definitely be digging in more on Clinton's records being kept locked up. Will you? I'm trying to stay a viewer of both Hardball and Countdown, but not if you're gonna continue being Hillary's mouthpieces. I doubt you'll post this, but hopefully somebody there will read it. Let's be a little more objective boys.
I haven't been able to figure out why Matthews constantly goes after Romney, every day he has a piece in which he attacks him. It seems that Matthews either is trying to paint Romney in a negative light hoping to influence the Republican primaries because he views Romney as the greatest threat to the Democrat challenger. Or, he is certain that Romney will win and is already working on beating him in the general election. But it is clear, Matthews has an axe to grind with Romney that he evidently doesn't have with Guilani, McCain, Huckabee or the other Republican candidates.
I trust Ron Paul.
He has always voted his principles.
Can any other candidate meke that claim?
Rove intentionally lost the 2006 elections!   With Bush in place, a relatively harmless Democratic majority would have two years to demonstrate ineffectiveness and to pick up blame for our ills.  If Rove had not done that, the Republicans would be facing all the blame and 2008 would have been a rout!  It’s about keeping the Presidency.
Here's an idea! Whoever gets elected President ought to have the loser as their Vice President.  That would introduce some real bipartisanship into the White House, and keep them honest, wouldn't it?
Chris,
Why go so lightly on the unqaulified candidates running for President.  Most are more qualified to pilot a Boeing 747 than use the Presidency as their first management job.  In today's world you need someone with demonstrated leadership and management experience.  A Senator or Congresseman position is not a healthy prereqisite for the CEO of the United States; Governor, Mayor, High ranking military officer, CEO of Fortune 500.  Like to see some real pressing of seriuos issues with the candidates: How are we $9 trillion in debt; What are you going to do about it?  When are you going to simlify the tax code?  How are you going to defend this nation from terrorists and illegal aliens?  Solve this stuff before we care about gay marriage, trade deficit global warming/freezing, life on Mars, reproductive cycle of bog turtle.  If the serious issues are not addressed we will not have to worry about the small stuff.  Get tougher or we will have to change the name of the show from "Hard Ball" to "Whiffle Ball".
