Better late than never: Sen. Watson responds

Posted: Wednesday, February 20, 2008 6:55 PM by Elizabeth Chuck

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, "Hardball" host Chris Matthews grilled Obama supporter Sen. Kirk Watson, D-Texas, on what Obama had accomplished while in the Senate. Watson was unable to respond during MSNBC's post-primary coverage that night, but he posted a response on his Web site on Wednesday. "Had I not lost my mind, here are the accomplishments I would have mentioned," Watson writes in his response, and then highlights some of Obama's feats.

So where is the list of Hillary Clinton's legislative accomplishments after 7 years in the Senate?
Chris,
Senator Obama has been in the US Senate for 1.5 years, Senator Clinton for 7.5 years. I continually hear about the experience she has - can you ask a Clinton supporter what she's pushed through the Senate during that time period - i can't recall anything. Play hardball on both sides....
Here's a suggestion for Chris Matthews. Do some research  and report on all the legislation Obama has sponsored that has become law. Then compare that with Clinton's legislative accomplishments. If you care about these candidates' records then show your viewers what these records are.
Chris,
Hardball! You threw 3 97 mph fastballs past this guy. He never got the bat off his shoulder, walked back to the dugout and said what the hell was that!
Now how about asking the Clinton people what makes her "ready on day one".  What has she done in 12 years to change any policy, inspire any action.  It's hardball, but lets play fair!
Ok Chris .. you gave Claire McCaskill an opportunity and 60 seconds to tell you of all Obama's accomplishments.. It was so easy to see that comming.. I am tired of all the holyer than thou Obamabots and the surrogates trying to plant the seed that the election is over.. The only thing that counts is the delegates and there just isnt a world of difference at this point.. Furthermore neither one will have enough to have the winninng amount..  And mr. Obama and his minions dont seem to like that , hence the push and shot across the the bow of the DNC  threatening mutiny.. It is simple if no one hits the number then the delegates decide.. Thats called politics and obama knows it.. He puts it in the mouths of his babes and tries to keept his hands clean.. He is a good politician.
Mr. Matthews won stump the chump last night.  I know Mr. Matthews already knew the guy didn't have a clue.  Let me tell you what would of been my response.  I don't care, I know the things he has worked on.  What is more important to me is he is not part of the Washington establishment.  More and more bills he sponsors corners him into he What he can't and can stand for.  It is just the way it works.    If he had three terms in the senate he would lose that my support and my vote.

Has anyone ever wonder that in this great country we always have to think just a experienced polictician can become President. Obama is the closest we can get.

Well..one could only wander how the young lady would have responded to such rudeness by Chris.  It's obvious that you're a Clinton supporter (I support neither candidate).  The list of legislative accomplishments has been extensively published across the internet...and in Congress.  It would have been much more fitting for you to ask about Hillary's accomplishments, since it is theoretically zero...unless you want to name a few post offices.

Also I would love to point to the fact that Mr. Obama has as much, if not more "experience" then Ms. Clinton.  Just because my wife is married to a dentist, doesn't make her a dentist.  Her 1 piece of legislature that she attempted to get off the ground during HER 1st term, was sadly rejected.  Being a stay at home mother in the white house, and she still couldn't accomplish anything.

Sad sad sad, I guess the media is about as redneck as we would claim America to be...just want another white person...any white person, in the White House.
Chris Matthews,

I watch your show and Countdown almost every night and find them very informative.  However, although your question to Sen. Kirk Watson was totally appropriate, I think you pushed it too hard by repeating it.  But much more importantly I believe you, and essentially all the other press, do not force Hillary and/or her supporters to specifically identify  her "experience and accomplishments".  For example, you let the woman representative from Ohio supporting Hillary say things like "the great things Hillary has done for health care for children" and other similar comments, but you DID NOT ask the representatve essentially the same question you asked Sen. Watson, to identify SPECIFICALLY what those supposed acchivements were.  Hillary may very well have them, but the point is you should have asked the representative!  To repeat myself, the press, as well as the Clinton campaign, have done little or nothing to clearly delinate her experience and accomplishments.
Last night on the alleged "Hardball" show we saw one of the most biased interviews by a host that I have witnessed during this political campaign.  Chris Matthews seems to be so happy that he caught an Obama supporter off guard by asking him to name Obama's legislative accomplishments, but it is a shame to see someone like Matthews who probably calls himself a journalist behave in such a biased manner.

A real game of hardball gives both sides a chance to bat.  And an objective journalist would have simply asked the Clinton supporter on the show last night to answer the SAME question: "Ms. Clinton Supporter, can you name just one of Hillary Clinton's legislative accomplishments?"  My guess is you would have heard the same silence from the Clinton supporter that you heard from the Obama supporter because the biggest farce in this campaign is that Hillary Clinton is believed to be so "experienced".

An even bigger farce is the notion that Clinton is a health care specialist.  Doesn't anyone other than me remember the last time Hillary Clinton tried to come up with a health care plan for the country?  She was just the co-president back then.  Given her past failures which include supporting the disastrous NAFTA bill and voting to give President Bush the power to get us into the Iraq morass, should we turn the country over to Hillary?  I sure HOPE not!

Play some fair hardball in the future, Chris Matthews!   I have liked your show before last night.  But if you can't be fair and balanced go work at Fox where biased interviews are the norm, not the exception.
Chris,

I watch your show often, primarily because you for the most part hold both side to the same heat of hardball.  I must say that the topic of Michelle Obama shocks me.  Why would you ask what she meant when it is perfectly clear if you continue the her phrase ...BECAUSE...  Lets get back to giving them both the hardball rather than promoting  ratings.  Now if it keeps you on TV I could deal with it a little longer as long as you sincerely corrected the record after all the fun.
I find it quite interesting that in these days, in this time, everybody proclaims that we have seen huge voter turnouts...it's true. But are we Americans so stupid that we can't choose the best candidate? If Hillary Clinton's "Legislative Accomplishments" are so much greater than Obamas, does that really matter to the voting public? Clearly, as the polls would indicate, it doesn't. So, perhaps, after reading this message, Chris Mathews can insult the American people for being stupid enough to vote for Obama over Clinton...clearly, he doesn't have the "Legislative Accomplishments" under his belt and the voters have spoken emphatically in the numbers...and the words are "Who cares!"
I understand Chris playing hardball when he's on hardball!! Maybe Chris has cracked under pressure from the unkind comments he made about Hillary before, so now he goes after Obama! Chris you never asked the other person to tell us what Hillary has accomplished and then you could not answer Keith's question about what has congress done! You are beginning to look like an Obama hater, not a free news person!!
Chris,

I have been watching your show lately because of the enthusiasm and zeal you bring to your coverage of this election season.  It did bother me however, to turn on the TV tonight to see see you misquote Michele Obama to her disadvantage, you had her saying and you repeated it at least 3 times -- "for the first time in my adult lifetime i am proud of my country," WHEN WHAT SHE ACTUALLY SAID WAS "for the first time ... i am really proud of my country."  Really is a key word here.  She could have been proud many times, but now the pride has surged to a more intense degree, and so she uses the adjective "really."  I like you and your show, but I would like it even more if you didn't misquote or distort quotes or facts just to make a better story.  This viewer for one, does not appreciate it.
Chris,
If you say Michelle Obama's speech in Madison, WI on Monday, Feb 18, 2008 at about 3:13pm, you would hear Mrs. Obama say(if it hasn't been changed but you can read her lips) she says "really proud". This would also be important to hear and see when attacking her for the speech in Milwaukee.
I am glad you brought Senator McCaskill to set the record straight today. I was not sure if the intent behind that line of questioning was to demonstrate that Obama had no record or to demonstrate that his supporters do not know the details of his record.

On your (or Scarborough's) comment this morning about having to choose between a year out of school Dr. or the experienced Dr., I would choose the straight out of school Dr. if he demonstrated real talent in during practical training as opposed to the experienced Dr. who made mistakes when tough decisions were called for in their career.
A Hardball fan, I found Matthews' attack of Sen. Watson last night offensive. As Keith pointed out on air, the program was NOT Hardball and Matthews came across as mean spirited and nasty. He behaved like a school yard bully. A real turnoff!  It has made me rethink my viewing habits.
Chris Matthews conduct in this interview was reprehensible.  As a member of the military to see the conduct, aggression, and complete lack of respect by Mr. Matthews in "interviewing" a U.S. Senator, makes me question at times why I and others fight for freedom of speech.  If he was a prosecuting attorney trying to get a conviction against a violent criminal, then it would have been acceptable; but as we all know it was an elected official who serves our nation.  Mr. Matthews tactic in questioning the Senator were abhorent and bring great shame on himself and more specifically on NBC for not taking any action.  My action will be to boycott NBC and it's affiliates for the forseeable future.
It was a classic case of Chris Matthews bullying an unsophisticated state Senator to show how tough he is, a cowardly tactic he usually reserves for women.  Sucker punching someone invited on his show and then trying to make it an issue the next day.  Not great journalism.

As Chris likes to quote movies, the journalistic style here more resembles the Robert Duvall character in "The Natural" who sums up his twisted motives by admitting he never played the game, but justifies his despicable actions as "making the game more interesting by breaking the likes (of his subjects of attack)."

Obama is not running on his long list of legislative accomplishments -- any more than Carter was and you know it. I am not sure what motivated the episode, turned off by the sloppy southerners looks or feelings that you are somehow superior to an inferior, but all that was reflected was a lack of class on your side.  At the very least put a warning label on your invitation next time

Wake up, Chris, it is not tough nor good journalism.  Just Cheap shots. You are better than that, or can be, we have seen it.
why no clip of Chris using Osama Bin Laden to represent Obama for a 'story' he presented? Chris seems quick to jump on others missteps and mistakes but 0 coverage on his. Plus no one allowed to comment on it.
I believe the Senator from Texas just got caught off guard.  It's like he walked into a burger joint & the waiter said may I offer you some frog legs & caviar...just plain old confusion...He thought he coming on to say some nice words about Barack's win in WI & the possibility in TX on a campaign wrap-up show...Instead he walked into the 'Congressional Hearing' that IS Chris Matthews....That was a bait & switch...Hardball comes on 7pm(est)& it has it's own theme music and everything Chris....But I think that's the funniest thing I've seen on your show since I started watching...I support Obama & could go through a laundry list of his accomplishments...however I have had a brain freeze or two in my lifetime as well...Give the guy a break :-)
Matthews forgot he wasn't on Hardball. I think it was clear that Sen. Watson was ambushed. He was on to answer questions about Obama's big win that had just occurred moments before. Watson didn't go on to examined why he personally supported Obama. Matthews antics of late are getting wierd. He keeps quoting Michelle Obama wrong. She said "For the first time in my adult life, I am REALLY proud of my country." Matthews keeps leaving the "really" part out of it because it puts it more in context and context is evil in the world of talking heads. Matthews also showed a picture of Osama bin Laden the other day when he was referring to Obama. I am a fan, but you know, I can't really tell you a lot about Obama's Senate accomplishments either, but not knowing his Senate accomplishments is far better than knowing of bad legislation like the Iraq war resolution. I am a veteran and a teacher, and I have been proud of, and under Bush, embarrassed by this country. Regardless if some may think me unpatriotic, for the first time in my adult life I am REALLY proud of this country. A REALLY proud white man in Texas that was raised by people that thought the N word was good for negating people and punchlines. I am really proud of my country. Matthews, Take a lesson from Russert, be a pro all of the time.
MSNBC is obviously not interested in any real debate on the truth here..I posted several facts to show the record of Both obama and Clinton. However you do not seem to want to show another side to the story.... gosh I thought one sided reporting was the exclusive job of Fox.. guess not
Lay off the poor guy. In this same broadcast I heard Tim Russert mention the three most contentious Democrat conventions in history: 1963, 1976, and 1980. He must have read the teleprompter wrong, mistaking 1968 for 1963. Or else there was a typo. No matter what, Tim should have known better because I did. So lay off the poor guy from Texas. He doesn't get paid the big bucks.
As short as your show was tonight, I was privilaged to watch your questioning of Sen. Watson. The look on his face was priceless, but it reminded me of another interview.  Who was that, now, hmm. Oh, I remember; it was you on the Daily Show promoting your book. And Jon was hardballing you about the content of the book and you had that same look. In fact, I was surprised at the pain in your voice when you said, something like this: "Geez, Jon, I thought you were my friend."
I really do like your show, but sometimes you go over the top.  Were you bribed by the Clinton campaign so that they would allow MSNBC to hold future debates? Just a question.
Dear Mr. Matthews,
I was once an exclusive CNN fan, but have since enjoyed following the election coverage on your network and have gained a great deal of respect for you and your colleagues.

I was, however, disappointed in your banter with Texas Senator Kirk Watson.  I agree, as does he, that he could not summon the information that many of us (die hards) know by heart.
What I was wondering is why you refrained from asking Clinton supporter Rep. Tubbs Jones the same question.

I was especially intrigued that you didn't "grill" Rep. Tubbs Jones on her claim of Senator Clinton's   "Legislative accomplishments ALL ACROSS THE WORLD."  Attacking that groundless statement seemed right up your alley.
I'm almost your biggest fan!
Much love!
Outstanding Job by Chris Mathews.
Finally, a journalist who asks relevant questions.

I'm a huge fan of Hardball and of Chris Mathews, however, while the question was certainly correct to ask and demand and an answer from the Texas senator, the stridency by which Chris asked was a little off-putting. It was clear that the Senator was unprepared. Chris could have made his point without embarassing him. It was kind of like running up the points at a football game against a clearly inferior team. You win but wind up looking like a jerk.Uncharestically bad form on Chris' part
Chris you were so rude to State Senator, Kirk Watson, on Tuesday night.  You stated tonight on your program that people who were on Hardball knew you were tough.  May I remind you that you were not on Hardball when you went after Mr. Watson.
I love MSNBC but was VERY uncomfortable while watchig the election returns Tuesday night with Chris Matthews and his interview of Sen. Watson. Since Sen. Watson was obviously as a loss for words, why not just move on with the interview?  I know that the show is called "Hardball", but did you just have to keep hitting him in the head with the ball?  I am not familiar with Sen. Watson, but I have been in the hotseat before and I really felt for him.  Perhaps you thought that he should be more informed about his candidate (whom I plan to vote for) but, please.  Perhaps the American public has stooped to the level of enjoying seeing people humiliated on the air, although but I would hope that the mentality of the general public watching your program is mentally above that.
Chris you were so rude to State Senator, Kirk Watson, on Tuesday night.  You stated tonight on your program that people who were on Hardball knew you were tough.  May I remind you that you were not on Hardball when you went after Mr. Watson.
I believe the question you asked the govenor of Wisconsin and the congressman from Texas was a fair question (Name one thing Senator Obama has accomplished during his time in the Senate).  My question is if you are really interested in Senator Obama's accomplishments why would you not ask someone who knows?  Why would you get so much pleasure out of embarrassing these two men?  In my opinion the only thing you accomplished was making yourself look small. Sorry to say you've lost this fan.
I have been a faithful viewer of Hardball, but always with some reservations. Yesterday's sucker punch by Chris Matthew's was a self-promoting, ego driven low blow. He wasn't even appearing on "Suckerball". He was appearing as part of MSNBC coverage as Kieth pointed out.  Some people don't know when they are being a jerk. Some people can't resist the opportunity to be one.Does it really matter if the guy can't recite Obama's legislative record? You can see Matthews slobbering all himself trying to set him up to get the question in.This was about promoting his show not about coverage. Count me among your former viewers.
Last night on MSNBC, Chris Matthews asked a Texas senator (who is an Obama supporter) if he could name one or any accomplishment(s) Obama has as a senator, and the Texas politician could not even come up with an answer. He had no idea, no real knowledge regarding Barack Obama's senate record. I'll bet you could ask any of his supporter's the same question and you would net the same pathetic response. It was truly a brave question by Chris Matthews and an embarrassing response by this senator. It's very sad to see people in America (even elected officials) basing their vote on fancy oratory, and not on the real issues and substance these candidates bring to the table.  Kudos to Chris Matthews for telling it like it is.  I'm sure the Texas senator had time to go back to his office and Google Obama's senate record which according to www.GovTrack.us is as follows:
Statistic: Barack Obama missed 185 of 1098 votes (17%) since Jan 6, 2005 (Extremely Poor relative to peers).
How convenient for Sen. Watson to leave this out of his website response.

The fact that Senator Obama has a thin resume doesn’t bother me.  Abraham Lincoln was only a one-term congressman in the 1840s and he turned out pretty good.  If you value experience in Washington more than anything else, why not elect Senator Byrd as President?
Why do Americans want 'change' so much?

We are sick and tired of this fascist right wing ,question and SPIN exchange,

Why the loaded questions? Why the spin? Why is this a 'Bad' thing.

It is time to move on , past the Bush/Cheney Liar politics.

I like you Chris, get with it, Americans are tired of the BS, we are sick of the BS, enough already.
Thank you for one of my favorite moments from the 2008 campaign.  I have asked this question of Obama supporters and 95% of the time, I received the same blank look that you got.  My 12 year old son and 10 year old twin girls know more about the backgrounds and accomplishments of Clinton and Obama than most adults.
Here are some of Sen. Obama's accomplishments...

During the first 8 years of his elected service, Obama sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced

233 regarding health-care reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs

His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These included the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006, the Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act…

Mr. Matthews, I listen to you regularly.  But come on, that's not the right way to get answers.  He should have responded like all politicians.  "It's not my job to read you his resume, I'll leave that for him.  I'm supporting him because he is dynamic and she's not.  He displays himself as approachable and she's not.  And he comes across and believeable and she does not.
Easy response.
Also, just a side note (different subject).  If you're going to keep talking about this issue with Michelle Obama ask the question and do the research, what do the people that don't like what she said look like.  Blacks have been accused for centuries that they were unpatriotic.  That's a euphemism for reverse racism.  I immediately perk up when I hear someone tell me they're a patriot.  That's a code word for one thing only.............
Glad to hear at least a few factual comments on the Senator Obama's shortages.
Watching the “Nation of Sheep” following Obama’s “Yes, we can” slogan, I wonder
what resources the apparent Messiah will use, as the president, to fulfill the loudly chanted desires.
Chris, I read Senator Watson's response to the incident. Granted, he was there to defend his candidate and failed to do so, but we all suffer what is commonly referred to as a "brain lapse" every now and then. Barack Obama's popularity is nearing rock star status, as you showed yourself by counting the number of times people have fainted during his speeches a couple of days back.

Obama is a different sort of candidate for a lot of Americans, and not just because of his race. True, he's also a blank slate due to his brief tenure as Senator. This is why the main criticism directed at him is "lack of experience." But the fact that people want a clear change from the present administration and its policies is helping Obama as much as his personality, and this is overshadowing his lack of Senatorial accomplishments.

It's still a long way until election day. As the furor over whether Obama wins the nomination (or not) dies down, you'll be seeing more folks backing him up, all better prepared for your questions than Watson was last night.
This Senator Watson is exactly what is wrong with the country.  A preacher of hope comes along, the youth get more involved, as do ADULTS - who scream for justice, but have done nothing to become informed on parties, policies, successes. Then they walk away, forgeting to be patriots and part of their own government through the same laziness.
This takes the cake however, my God, the man is a state senator!  Shameful - all of it.
What a friggin' weak next day excuse Senator.  No one believes it. Shameful!
You should leave the political arena.  I just feel so ashamed that too many Americans like you (a lawmaker for cryin' out loud) and the young just are too lazy to work at our patriot duties, be examples of that rather than whiners.
This behavior is what is killing our country.
Senator Watson sounds like Senator Obama. He talks but does not tell us anything. What does Senator Obama plan to do as President and How will he accomplish it?
That would have been real hardball if only the same challenge had been posed to the Clinton supporter as well. I have challenged several Clinton supporters the same way and not one came up with a single valid achievement for her. The only one that was close is that she was elected as a New York Senator without even living in that state-if that is one?
Of course he has his talking points now.  The Obama camaign faxed, emailed, and IM'd him the whole list of votes in for he was "present".
Does it bother anyone that the media and Democrats are being duped by the GOP to get Obama on the ticket?
Watson was like a deer caught in Mathews headlights.

I think CM was a bit of a bully putting Watson on the spot like that.

I've lost my interest in Hard Line after that "it's all about me, Chris Mathews" moment.
Great job, Chris.  This is what we expect of political journalists; tough questions and demanding an answer rather than allowing the spin machines of all political figures to control the debate.
Dear Chris---

Thank you so much for asking about Obama's accomplishments after Hillary has just about lost her bid for President.  I have noticed  before that you do not care for Hillsry.  Just an observation. At this point I will not vote for either canidate.  We had one President that did not know what he was doing, we do not NEED another.
What a Bush League move!  Chis Matthews who can get just about any Obama supporter he wants decides to side swipe this guy on national TV!  This morning I turned on Morning Joe to see Chris Mattews smug face as if he just took down someone really important.  Now that you have ambushed him, I bet that you wouldn't have the conviction to have this guy back on!

This makes me continue to wonder why MSNBC keep this clown around.

For the record, I have been an Edwards supporter and I have not made my mind up yet as to who I will vote for in my primary in May.
