Matthews: Getting into Pennsylvania

Posted: Tuesday, March 11, 2008 5:29 PM by Cathy Finkler

Pennsylvania holds its presidential primary on April 22.  That’s six weeks from now.   That’s a long time to talk about something on Hardball.  I want to get beyond the polls and the short-hand of James Carville’s line that “Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and Alabama in between.”

One thing I’ve started to do is get an e-mail relationship going with the local Democratic leaders around the state. I sent out this note to the all the county chairs.  “How’s this presidential race look to you?  I know it’s a long way ‘til April 22 but I’m checking around with the party people, especially with the “Hardball” watchers.”

Here’s what I received in return.  I think it really adds to what we know about the contest right now.

 **********************************************************************
“At this point Hillary Clinton would appear to be ahead. The race will be decided in the southeast suburbs. Philadelphia and Allegheny (includes Pittsburgh) along with the four southeast counties account for 65 % of the Democratic primary turnout statewide.”

“Conventional wisdom is that this is a state where Democratic primaries have been won by women but not by African-American candidates.  But there has never been a well-financed high profile African-American candidate in a statewide Democratic primary.”

“Pennsylvania will be pivotal in November.   If the Democratic primary becomes negative and divisive, it may become very difficult to carry in November.   We can only hope that the candidates will keep it above board.”

“The Obama campaign is opening a county office this weekend and the Clinton campaign may send a major player soon.  I’ve spent since January watching you guys on MSNBC. Now I get to watch as you cover Pennsylvania.”

“The overwhelming feeling among activists, our national convention delegates, and the rank and file in the neighborhoods as we circulated nominating petitions, is strong support for both candidates, even if they have a personal preference.  Ideally, they’ll both be on the ticket, in either order. The biggest fear is that they’ll dirty each other up and make it easier for the Republican.  But there is an extraordinary excitement and commitment right now to be unified after the convention.”

“Just incredible!   On Wednesday, I received over forty phone calls and close to that again today from people wanting to get involved.  On Thursday, the Monroe County Voter Registration Office had 200 people come in to change their registration.”

“The presidential race promises to be one of the most, if not the most, exciting ever.  We are working hard to put a Democrat in the White House.

“Our issues are as follows:
   1. Universal health care
   2. The Iraq war – no more Colonialism!
   3. We need to strengthen our Social Security
   4. Improve Medicare and Medicaid
   5. Many of our elderly are living on so little income.

“We have two excellent people running for President.  Either would make a great President.”

“Remember to vote.”

“As you would imagine there is a lot of excitement among Democrats.  I believe the Lehigh Valley will be a microcosm of the rest of the state.   We have a great mix of urban, suburban, rural, union, small business, major industry, young and old.”

“The next few weeks will be like nothing I have ever seen. Should be fun.”

“Our registrations are way up.  Lines are forming for Republicans and independents to change their registration to be able to vote in the April 22nd Democratic primary and the county party is hustling to get locations for rallies, policy speeches and dinners.”

“Although there is a 1.5 to 1 Republican edge in total registrations, the mood of the electorate has changed and new Democratic registrations far exceed Republican registrations, with over 1,000 newly-registered Democrats already this year.”

“Both campaigns are in the process of opening offices here at the moment.  I think we’ll be the 6-week version of Iowa and New Hampshire!”

“We’re happy our “Late Primary” will actually mean something.”

“This election is becoming a double-edged sword. The local Democratic Party is attracting new people and many of them are Republican converts. My biggest complaint about politics stems from the fact that too many people are content to watch from the sidelines. To see so many new faces and so much excitement, I cannot help but be pleased. Conversely, the longer this primary process drags on, the tougher it will be to heal the wounds heading into the fall. It is my opinion that the DNC is missing the big picture with respect to the super delegates. Instead of being proactive and addressing it now, they are hoping the problem resolves itself.”

**********************************************************************

These are on-the-ground perspectives on the Democratic race for president in Pennsylvania.  They tell me that Hillary Clinton is clearly ahead but that voters are hugely excited to hear from both candidates.  This could be the most pivotal battle in Pennsylvania since Gettysburg!

Chris,First to let you know, I supported Obama and the ideas he had for this country i love. But after the latest new of his pastor it is very hard to think that Obama never heard any of this statments made by him.Obama is very smart but not smart enough and to think that he could just say that i do not agree with him, Obama is thinking that all Americians are dumb.he listen to this for more then 20 years. I am sure there are some things that he agrees with and if there is only 1. he has NO right to run this country.I think that this pushed back any progress the black movement had 10 years, and that is to bad.I know this is not the views of all blacks in america, only a few but it brings all down,He should not only appoligize to america he should appoligize to his own people.for the lies he is trying to sell now. I am very disapointed in him.
I believe that the future primaries will dictate who will become the democratic nominee. Unfortunatly we democrates have let independents  vote in our primaries, many of whom will be voting for McCain in the final. At lease in Pa. it'll be a real Democratic primary.
My wife and I watch you every evening and keep looking for you to question how we can best restore the international image of this Country so soured by the current inadequate Administration.  Clinton appears best qualified to do this but only lately have you been fair to her in your comments. We say this having lived and worked overseas and have been distressed to see our high image shattered by deceit.
I can’t understand how so many people, young and older, can support the Obama Campaign with so very little detail about how we’ll be changed for the better and brought together as a nation.  His lack of experience and the skimpy information on these changes worry me a lot.
I feel he is only picking up votes from the African Americans, the young, those who long to be young again, and some Non-Africa Americans that think voting against him confirms some sort of a racial bias. I for one am very tired of this “guilt complex” of many Non- African Americans seem to suffering with and its  affect on their ability to make unbiased decisions.
I am sincerely amazed that you included comments by people who are saying Hillary is ahead in Pennsylvania.  Your show is so anti-Hillary and pro-Obama that I have stopped watching it.
I truely believe that Hillary will shine in PA...
She will show us what she is about, and where her
priorities are.....
PA will be a stepping stone for her....rightfully
so, because she is the only candidate that will know
how to carry us through this terrible economy, and
come out 'on top' again.....AND WITH HILLARY >>>>>
WE WILL
I said from the beginning with all the canidates  Hilary as president and Obama as vice president. a winning combination. Her political experiance and his common sense.
Obama is now a liability!  |

Well, he did it.

He opened his mouth and admitted that for the past 20 years he didn't have a clue that his pastor and church were preaching victim mentality messages and spewing toxins from the pulpit.

If he's that oblivious and stupid than he shouldn't run for office. His "explanation" was like a virtual shot to his political head...

p.s. I'm voting for the Clinton-Edwards team to recapture and restore national dignity!
I think that the media is failing to emphasize to its audience the true reason for Hillary Clinton's recent big states wins which came in open primaries. The Pennsylvania contest will eliminate the "Rush Limbaugh" factor in which the right wing nuts have followed their leader and deliberately tried to create chaos in the selection of the Democratic Party nominee. Democrats should NEVER allow Independents or Republicans to choose their Presidential nominee.

The media has also failed miserably in dissecting just when and how Hillary Clinton who had no security clearance while First Lady acquired the "experience" that has been central to her campaign to date.

Finally, as we approach the 5th year anniversary of the immoral invasion of Iraq, programs like HARDBALL should be doing more to educate the electorate that the war is indeed an economic issue. Hillary Clinton voted for a war that has jeopardized the economic future of our children and grandchildren.  The Iraq war has lasted longer than WW II and Hillary Clinton has yet to apologize.  This alone is indicative of why she does not deserve to be the Democratic nominee.
I think we Decocrats have a "lesser of two evils" battle on our hands. After Barack's pastor has been "outed" so to speak. I've narrowed it down to Hillary. I wanted to give him a chance, but I don't think he can talk his way out of this one. I think the American people won't be able to look past the close association with such a radical idealist. The things that his Pastor said scared people into re-thinking if we are ready for Barack Obama. I say not yet. I feel America is like a child that just got themselves into serious trouble. We need a mother to fix our country's proverbial boo-boos. We americans are loosing the election no matter what the outcome. I wish that movie "Dave" could be a reality. Maybee MSNBC could coin a new reality show " Americas Next President". Imagine that . A fair, evenly funded, special intrest free competition where Americans can choose the most qualified ,honorable,  and respected person to lead the free world. Think about it there could be a temp agency owner in Smallville, USA that could lead this country to a whole new level of prosperity, patriotism, and phiscal responsibility. American would once again be a model of Democracy and leadership that the world would look up to. Hmmm.
Has everyone FORGOTTEN that Obama's mother was WHITE.  He would be the last individual on earth to create division among races. Also please don't forget his speech of Unity among races at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
May the best woman win.  God Bless America!
Chris,
Seems like you been mostly playing softball this campaign season with your teammate, Keith O.
Here's a hardball question for ya. How can someone know another person for 20 years, respect someone eough to have them marry you and baptise your kids, be a "spiritual advisor, claim to have a deep rooted personal relationship - aka - "an old uncle" and attend many, many sermons and most likely innumerable personal conversations AND not know what this person strongly supports and/or believes in......a suprise?
Chris - drop the softball and pick up the pebble - throw a hard high one - see if Obama takes it yard or whiffs......?
The fact that Obama did not come clean on Rezko and now this ministers racist and hateful American comments will sink any chance Obama had in PA. These and any other yet unknown bombshells will haunt him in the fall.

Unless Hilliary gets the nomination I unfortunately see the return of moderate and conservative Democrats going to McCain in the fall. Obama and CNBC will most likely say it is a race issue but I have to say the more people find out about him, he might be the one with a race issue. In fact most people I know are getting sick and tired hearing about race.

Not every one agrees with his viewpoints and that does not make someone a racist. CNBC and Obama supporters need to get a life.

GO HILLIARY
I really enjoy your show, Chris! (most of the time!)  I'm proud of you for being agains the war on Iraq!   Please show some of the "Winter Soldier" stories.  These are true stories that people need to hear!  Thank you for listening.
Due to the issues that came out about Obama's church, i believe that Hillary will win in Pennsylvania.  It is way too late for Obama to distance himself from the preacher.  I think we have seen the truth that is Obama, ..DIdnt Obama's wife also profess to "not be proud of America" too? Too many things make me believe that he and his friends and family are not friends of THE USA.  GO HILLARY
I am from the one minority that Hillary has not mentioned yet. As an American Indian, what can she do for us, given that a majority of our people have much in common with the third world?
David Bositis of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a black think tank, says Clinton probably lost more black support than she gained among whites when supporters such as her husband began dropping subtle race cards into the debate; they neglect to mention that balck activist everywhere were calling each other to tell them a "brother" was a serious candidate and began to threaten super-delegates.

No matter how you call the race card, Obama's campaign has repeatedly said it will do what it must for the vote.

That is the reputation they project on the Clinton Campaign.

There is nothing right about this campaign. Two groups which normally align and work cooperatively are used to divide. And a white man walks away.

Race issues + gender issues = white males prevail again.

What can Pennsylvannia tell us that is not that reality?

When considering the media being easy on a candidate, let's consider that they regularly take her word for how much "experience" she has and that she is ready to become commander-in-chief.  I watch CNN, MSNBC and Fox almost continuously, recording one while watching another live, and have seen that when her inaccuracies are mentioned, it is just in passing and just skimed upon while reporting as fact that she is more experienced.  Time in office as a Senator and as First Lady do not necessarily equate to higher readiness.  Do your jobs and expose her false, or at the very least, exaggerated experience claims.
The good people of Pennsylvania have a pivotal role in the outcome of the Presidental candidate. I'm rather surpised by the response in the sense of what is important the important issues were stated. None of which addressed the current economic crisis we all face? I belive George Sr. got the message. "It's the economy stupid"
The canidate that best provides a inspiration that all Americans can participate with family wage jobs will succeed. Learning from the past to build to the future. The question now to the voters in Pennsylvania is which canidate will do what is needed to retool our nation and Pennsylvania?
This country is in a huge mess and all the issues we face wether its the war, health care, social security, medicare, energy, or immigration has been a mis-guided rip off of all our American values under the watch of the Republican party.
Do we as Democrates tollerate from either canidate the ditry trick play book that we expect from the Republican operatives?
I believe the poeple of Pennsylvania and the rest of the nation are sick and tired of this form of politics.
We need debate about the issues that face our great nation. We need solutions and leadership to set a direction that will give all of us a sense of being stakeholders in the future of our great nation.
When canidates speak of experience we all have had that and I for one havent liked the results.
Dont give me more of the same, give me solutions, give me hope that this can change, give me back a government for the people not at the people....
Its your choice folks of Pennsylvania, center stage, get out the VOTE... Lets take back our nation

The race is getting more intense and muddier everyday, it's exciting and sad at the same time.
I am a 68 year old military retired, democrat and, based on my knowledge of the Clinton's abilities, feel confident that Hillary will get the nomination by Clinton/superdelagate gamesmanship.
I support Obama but am sure he will get lost in the wake of the egocentric manipulation machine with which he competes.  All I can do is wish him luck and maybe kick in a couple of bucks..  Several people I've talked to have said they may sit this one out.  Not a good thing to do considering our country's present condition.
Democratic Party will not be able to 'unify' the country or work together with Republicans, if they cannot 'unify' themselves and agree on a presidential candidate that runs counter to the 'majority' of primary voters.  If the 'super-delegates' have to decide and the decision is counter to the popular vote, then the term 'liberal fascism' bears another look as the candidate decision really will have come from top down.  Fascism works top down not bottom up, do it seems.
After years as a registered Republican in Lancaster County, this year I have changed my registration to Democrat.  Why?  John McCain is not the candidate for the Republican party.  His views on the Iraq war is more Bush rhetoric.  His view on taxes is waffle-waffle.  His immigration position is waffle-waffle.  He admitted his lack of knowledge on the economy.  I respect him as an American patriot.  And finally, there seems to be little to vote for here in the PA primary on the Republican side.
I will probably vote for Clinton.  Why?  She is the lesser of two evils and probably a more known quantity.  Obama likes to sit on the fence and doesn't seem to sure about anything.  His "present" vote in the Illinois congress supports his fence position.  He is a great orator, but definitely not the conviction needed for a president.  His recent position on Jeremiah Wright pushed me over the edge for Clinton.
Obama needs to resign. He may actually cause the Dems to lose the race, as unbelievable as this seems. He cannot distance himself from a church he has been a member of for so long. He endorses Rev. Wright as his spiritual mentor in his book, rather than explain the radical ideas of his church. He will be perceived as anti-American.
Geez do you think the media is in love with Obama - my gosh on Friday night when these clips of Rev Wright were shown, within an hour he had appeared on every major network with his lame denial.  I really can't buy his explanation as he had had conversations with Rev Wright re distancing himself from him during the election so if that is the case he HAD to know that this was a big problem.  Also his wife's remark re being proud of America for the first time in her life leads one to believe there is an undercurrent of anti Americanism there.  That may be all well and good for Chicago politics but to have this couple as President and First Lady makes my skin crawl.
HI Chris,
I respect you! I always watch your show and it's not baised in any current media-metrics. You've got the most credible show. And above all I admire your out-of-the-box and fair life philosophy.
You teach me a lot.
Thanks for listening.

Samuel
Hillary Clinton has demonstrated time and again that she has no integrity, which in my opinion is very important to be a successful inspiring president. She will lose to John Mc Cain handily at any cost. The elections will be similar to that of 2000 and 2004.  Well, America just following the greed of oil companies and big corporations have spawned the seeds of hatred throughout the world. No one can deny it. Proclaiming that publicly do not make one non-patriotic. Patriotism is not preaching falsehood and not blind nationalism. Obama is a better candidate in all the respects. He has ideas, he inspires people, he can bridge gaps across the political and racial lines. The pastor controversy will help him more than hurt him because now no one will believe that he is a muslim!!!
I was enthused with Obama at the beginning.  I was disappointed with the negative campaigning that happened in Ohio.  To attack Clinton is a mistake.  First, it undermines his message of change.  Second, he stayed at that church for 20 years and it was he that took the donations from M R.  He should defend himself but not attack.  By the way, was he at the service when these videos were taken?  Sometimes people miss certain sermons?  I hope he still believes in change.
I have found the media in the US biased towards Obama.
Why is that? Obama's song of change is going stale. When you look at his record as a senator it is weak.
He surrounds himself with a racist preacher and a wife who by her Freudian slip seems to echo the preacher's view of hatred for USA. Why are people (Obama & wife)running for election in a country they hate? Perhaps he should run in Africa where his father is from and the demographics are acceptable for the Obama family.
i have to admit i was thrown off by Obama's ministers comments.  I felt he threw down the ultimate race card.  Let's see if Obama has what it takes to work this sticky one.
Why do Mrs. Clinton's supporters think that beating Mr. Obama in certain states makes her the more viable Candidate?  When those are democrat versus democrat primary votes and have absolutely nothing to do with his ability to take on Sen. McCain in a general election when most of the democrats who may have voted for her would then most likely be voting for Mr. Obama against Sen. McCain?  I just don't under stand how that argument holds water?  Am I really that dense (which I concede is entirely possible) or are they?
It's sad for the democrats that they couldn't come up with a canidate with presidential qualifications.   Hillary with her crooked deals all of her adult life climaxing when Billy boy's assistant shot himself in the back and his computer got destroyed. Her goal is to rule US and Bill be secretary of UN.
What About Hillary lieing about her experience 1-that she started the   children health program 2 that she help with the peace program in Ireland 3- that she had some thing to do with the Bosa  result all theses things she lied according to senator Orin Hatch an also the man who won the nobel peace prize  an the comedian Sinbad if she lied about this what will she lie about as president?
Those who support Hillary Clinton don't even realize that they say "the Clintons" when they talk about what experience she has. Along with all the good done in their years in office, there were lots of bad too! It isn't fair that Obama has to fight against both Bill & Hillary (and Chelsea also) in this contest, so it is admirable that he continues to win despite his flaws and shortcomings being exposed. Now people won't vote for him because of his pastor's ranting but I will because he has shown that he is a leader not a follower. At least he is owning up to his mistakes, whereas Clinton won't address matters that are requested of her (like her tax statements). It is easy to put blinders on in this election, but if you looked at the candidates on balance, you'd see the Clintons have had more questionable dealings with shady characters in their time than Obama (just ask that Hsu fellow).
All three candidates had friends that had a bad choice of words and made nasty remarks, we should focus on what was said or not said by the candidate.
I am so sad to see what the democrat primary has sunk to. I was so excited when the primary season began. I wasn't sure Obama, whom I support, had a chance. When he began to gain support I was sure we were turning a corner in this country. Now I realize that the Clinton campaign is bound to come out the winner in this because they are so good at down and dirty politcs. I had forgotten just how awful the Clinton's can be until this campaign reminded me. I have decided that I will not vote for Hillary Clinton under any circumstances. Because I had forgotten how the Clinton's are, I would have had no problem voting for her earlier on. Just to let you know I am a middle aged  white women who is ashamed that the first viable woman candidate for president is so unworthy.
This race has always called attention to race and gender divides in this country but now it is focusing on the racial divide within the African- American community- younger versus older.  American must understand that the worst struggles of the African American community weren't that long ago and many African Americans who lived through them carry those scars and express them in their church communities.  Senator Obama is trying to heal that rift and leaving his church would be a step backwards in an effort to bring this country together.  The question is weather Pennsylvanians will see the bigger picture or allow this controversy to define the race.
OBAMA SHOULD DROP OUT OF THE RACE, BECAUSE OF THE ASSOCIATION/RELATIONSHIP WITH SUCH A HATE-MONGER AS REV,. WRIGHT,.  THE NEW REVEREND OF HIS CHURCH IS THE SAME TYPE OF ARROGANT HYPOCRITE THAT WRIGHT IS.
OBAMA IS NOT TRUTHFUL WITH THE PUBLIC-- HE INSTEAD SIDE-STEPS THE ISSUES AND ASSOCIATIONS HE HAS WITH ALL OF THESE PEOPLE.  THIS SHOWS THE TRUE LACK OF JUDGEMENT AND HYPOCRICY THIS TYPICAL POLITICIAN HAS.
FORGET THE IRAQ VOTE AND THE FACT HE COULDNT EVEN VOTE THEN
WHY DIDNT OBAMA DISCREDIT WRIGHT WHEN INTERVIEWED ON TV.  ALL HE DID WAS TIP-TOE AROUND THE ISSUE.

HOW DOES TED KENNEDY FEEL NOW ABOUT HIS LACK OF JUDGEMENTNT IN A CANDIDATE.???
OBAMA IS JUST ANOTHER SLICK HYPOCRITE WHO IS FOOLING THE VOTERS.
WAKE UP AMERICA BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sen. Obama made a mistake to suddenly disown his association with his pastor--what does that say about Obama's integrity when he does this?  How much of the Republican elite truly agrees with the radical Evangelical and/or white Christian-separatist agenda?
I'm Catholic and I don't agree with 100% of what my Church teaches--I have my own mind & I think for myself morally & politically.

The pastor's comments don't "scare" me--I understand their context, although I disagree with them. I don't think these ideas will "get us in trouble" as a country.  And I am insulted by a previous comment about our needing a "mommy (Hillary) to fix our boo-boos."   This country needs a dose of reality--many fellow citizens (and other parts of the world) think differently from the so-called mainstream. Sen. Obama is African & Caucasian; corporate & grass-roots; street & Ivy League--that's hard for even hardcore Dems to swallow.  If we can't hear radical(or even misguided) ideas within the party, we lose the understanding to face conflict at home and abroad.

This situation feeds fears that a young Pres. Barack "Hussein" Obama would secretly unleash a radical, non-Western agenda for national security, submit whites to blacks and other dreadful disasters--the Clintons are secretly playing upon those fears, just as the Repubs will in November.  Hillary is saying,"See, he IS the angry black man we all fear (at 3a.m.)!"

When the going gets tough, get tougher. Change takes COURAGE, not just hope.
Hilary needs to drop out of this race before she turns off all the new interest that has been generated by a truely inspirational candidate. Hopefully the superdelegates will see this opportunity to get more people invovled.  If they over rule the people, they will destroy the faith that many people have their ability to make a difference. The Clintons will try anything to get the nomination, even squashing the positive and hopeful spirit that is developing in this country.
Stop the mud slinging! Does anyone remember the time that this country wasted dealing with the Clinton dirty laundry. Hilary is more of the same old politics that many of us are tired of. People will either not vote, or vote Republican if the Democratic party over rules the people.
I started out as a Hillary supporter.  I happen to be in her demographic - a white female over 60 with an income of less than 50K.  The more I see of her ability to compromise principles and win at any cost, the more I am determined NOT to vote for her if she steals this nomination from Obama, who I now support.  I can't describe the disappointment and disgust I feel for the Clinton brand.  I don't think I can stand another 4-8 years of the drama that would provide us.  If she does aquire this nomination by the underhanded activities I now see, I don't plan to vote in November.
OK, Chris how come nobody ever refers to Obama as a white man with a black father ?
Why do you let McCain get away with comparing a possible long term military presence in Iraq with Korea, or Germany, or Japan?  Lutherans were not bombing Methodists in Germany, nor were Shintoists shooting Bhuddists in Japan, and in Korea, there was a line in the sand to defend.  This is an insurgency, neighbor assassinating neighbor.  War has changed since 1957 beginning with the Viet Nam conflict, and occupying forces are killed by people who look the same as the people you are trying to protect.  To compare this conflict with his father's conflicts shows a deep and dangerous misunderstanding of the Iraqi war leading to more "missteps and mistakes" in any future led by McCain.  Please press him on this, or quit calling yourselves "Hardball".
