Who won the debate?

Posted: Thursday, October 02, 2008 11:12 PM by Sam Go

MSNBC hosts reacted instantly on-air to how they thought the debate went. Below are a few highlights:

Chris Matthews
For a while, I thought I was hearing recitation. She was more of a contestant than a candidate. I thought I was watching a spelling bee with some of Gov. Palin’s responses. It was so reciting, so automatic.

She said she wasn’t going to listen to Gwen Ifill tonight. She also said didn't like "the filter of mainstream media," which means she’s not going to do more serious interviews like Katie Couric.

I also thought it was interesting that Sarah Palin wanted to enlarge the constitutional role for the vice president. I've never heard anyone seek an office, and then ask to have its powers increased on their watch. That was extraordinary and requires more exploration for the media.

So, in essence, tonight, what a statement: “I’m not playing by the rules, and when I get elected I want more power in the office than it has had before.” There's not too much humility there.

Pat Buchanan
Sarah Palin was sensational tonight. She not only met expectations, she wiped the floor with Joe Biden. She was personable, young, and exciting. She looked straight to the camera. I didn’t see a foot fault in the whole thing.

Of all the four candidates I’ve watched, she was the most  interesting and attractive of them all. I would take a look at the over-all impression of that hour and a half. Joe Biden was boring and Palin was exciting.

I sat with some Democratic ladies as I was watching, and they were all surprised at how well she did. I think there are conservatives and Republicans breathing a sigh of relief, saying, “Yes, we were nervous.”

I think she has done a sensational job and she had recaptured that magic she had at the convention.

Rachel Maddow
I think Sarah Palin met the lower expectations of not being willing to discuss policy in too much substance or detail. On the higher expectations on personality and poise, I didn’t think she met them. She was certainly very folksy but in a frantic, gimmicky way.

I thought the moment when Joe Biden choked up, the way we’ve seen him do over the years on the Senate floor -- about how he was not sure his children were going to pull through, he was referring to his son being injured in a car accident and losing his daughter awhile back -- she ignored it, and then just talked about John McCain as a maverick. It was a talking point and she used them in a forced, inhuman kind of way. It was as if she was a character instead of someone you might like to spend time with.

She did make news by saying the power of the vice president ought to be expanded. That wouldn't have been a big deal four years ago, but coming out of Vice President Dick Cheney and his legacy, her saying that -- that's news.

She also made a gaffe by calling the top U.S. military commander in Afghanistan McCllelan instead of McKiernan.

I don’t know, the next person that winks at me, I don’t think I’ll be able to take it.

Keith Olbermann
Gov. Sarah Palin did not crash, she did not burn, but she also did not answer the question.

Governor Palin began the debate with a request to keep things informal, asking Senator Biden at the handshake, "Hey, can I call you Joe?" From there, it was a short trip to attempting a connection with working class voters and the proverbial "Joe Six Pack."

But in addition to viewing the actual debate questions as optional, Palin's strategy when things got uncomfortable was to stray into energy no matter what the original topic.

Asked about her greatest  weakness, Governor Palin talked about her strengths and her marriage and her executive skills and the shining city on the hill.

Asked about Afghanistan, she got the name of the commander there wrong, misquoted him, and tried to scold Senator Biden for getting the quotes right.

Asked about Iraq, she got the number of troops there, wrong.

Asked about X, she answered about Y, and on at least one occasion said in advance she would not answer the moderator's question.

The Governor of Alaska did not spontaneously combust, she did not say she'd get back to us...  in that sense, it was a triumph. And possibly, in no **other** sense.

The question tonight: Was it enough?  Was Governor Palin's performance tonight the game-changer that was needed to reverse the downward slide of the Republican ticket?

I keep getting lost in Mrs.  Palin's answers to the questions.  She usually did not answer the question asked and then rambled all over the place.
She answers question more like she is running for Miss America not for Vice President.  I am a women and can not take her seriously.
It is frightening just to think for a minute that...if Palin is the VP and McCain dies...the country will be on her hands...Yes she is charming, charismatic, and she loves to wink to the camera. What about answering the questions?
Sarah Palin was sensational tonight. She was representive of America. She connected with the American people. If she can do that well after 5 weeks on the national political scene, I can only image how far she can take this country in the next 4 years with McCain.  I just wish the bias MSNBC and CNN networks didn't slant their views toward the democrats to satisfy their own agenda.  Just read the comments of Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow....really, did they actually watch the debate?????
No bias there in MSNBC's question:  Can Gov. Palin reverse the "downward slide" of the Republicans?  Palin not only met expectations but exceeded them.  Once Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann finish spooning with Obama, maybe we can get to some serious journalism.
Politics aside (yeah, right)but did anyone besides my wife and I notice that Senator Biden referred to people from Bosnia as "Bosniaks?"  It cracked us up.  It was the high point of the entire campaign.
I feel Biden brought much more fact to the table. I believe Palin was heavily coached, case in point, when Biden talked in great length about the housing downfall & the bailout bill & it went back to her, she couldn't talk about that. She quickly turned the subject to energy, one of her supposed fortes. She skirted around the issues that matter to our country at this time, but seemed to hit her stride when foreign policy came up. It appeared she was coached. She is nothing but a pretty face & a puppet for the Republican party. If I was on the fence about who I was going to vote for, she just blew it for the Republican party. She displayed her inexperience in many ways.
With Palin (read Palin's HANDLERS) deciding that she did not have to answer the moderator's questions, there are two major problems with this tack:
1.  This is a bald-faced admission that Palin probably won't know the answers to many questions, so therefore the  plan is to ignore any "inconvenient" questions.
2.  This approach reflects a continuation of the Bush administration's arrogance--basically saying "we don't have to answer your questions if we don't want to".  A moderator or any journalist in a sense represents ALL of us Americans who do not get the chance to ask questions of these candidates in person.  A politician who flat-out refuses to answer reasonable questions is thereby choosing to ignore US!  They should only do so at their own political peril!
Gwen Ifill really did a poor job as a moderator. It was her job to keep Palin on task, and had she, nuance and thoughtfulness would have won out over blatant appeals to obscure notions of American exceptionalism (since when is a good thing?) and "maverickness."

Biden won hands down as a wonk, but Palin probably appealed to "mainstream America" because the Obama campaign made a decision, apparently, to avoid any attack or response to attack, likely because of gender. This, combined w/ Ifill's failure to duly moderate, allowed Palin to get away with a pretty nasty yet fluffy performance that moves me, at least, from the "pity" side of the meter to the "yuck."

Ifill should have anticipated and responded more strongly to her evasion, although perhaps her hands were tied by the recent "controversy" over her book. Too bad.
to H. Hulick in Texas: Obama has ties to criminals - George Bush is a criminal!!!  And I bet you voted for him.  He gave this country and it's wealth to his family and friends around the world and Mccain promises more of the same.  He and his cupie doll - wink, wink, "darn right" and "high five to all the third graders!"

On several different questions it seemed as though Sarah Palin started to answer the question she was asked and as she answered it seemed something triggered an almost robotic finish to the answer that she had been taught by campaign surragates. Not to mention the fact that many of the questions were totally ignored by her and she then asked and answered her own question that were better suited to her. Biden won.
I really expected Palin to paint Biden as a DC slicky tonight, and am surprised that it was Biden who came across as the "real Joe". The part where he teared up was a beautiful moment for him. But Palin completely shanked it with her non-response. What a self-absorbed witch, she was too busy on her unblinking mission to acknowledge the truth and pain in Biden's answer.

LOVED that she ignored the Achille's Heel question -- she's probably still trying to figure out if Achilles Heel is the PM of Spain, Greece or Turkey. Moron!

Biden hit it out of the ballpark tonight.
Gobama!
It is hard to imagine the reason McCain picked Palin as a running mate. She seems very proud of her record in Alaska - but is currently under investigation about abusing her power there - and now she wants to be VP -- and EXPAND the power of that office? Does she really think the American people are crazy?
Gov Palin  has obviously been "tutored" on debate - and has been given canned answers, which she was unable to give in a clear manner. The two things she DID make clear were (1) she wasn't going to answer anything she didn't want to answer, and (2) she wants to become VP and expand the power of that office.
She comes across to me as someone who will do "whatever it take" ( as she said several times) to get what she wants. I truly believe she is a dangerous person.
I thought Palin was great she did what nobody expected and i think she caught Biden off guard. Palin went out throwing punches and Biden was trying to block himself but clearly Palin stood her ground and showed that she can run with the best of them. i think MSNBC needs to give Palin recognition and congratulate her instead of the endless slamming of her. Show some credit where its due, if u know Biden lost than just admit it. oh and Biden well i just didnt think he won and i was also very bored when he was talking, i only wanted to hear Palin. i think hearing palin talk tonite i will now decide to vote for mccain/palin
I feel that Senator Biden won the debate. I think Gov. Palin sounded too scripted and rehearsed. Many people may feel she won only because she didn't make any mistakes. I can understand that, but its not hard to clear the bar when its been set that low.
I have been watching MSNBC after the debate. I keep hearing what a good job she (gov. palin) did.  I beg to deffer.  She did not answer one question.  Instead she resorted to her script that she was schooled, not unlike the current "no child left behind" doctine which our children and grandchildran are subjected to from this administration. Taught to memorize, not to think!
Palin was clearly reading off the script. She was coached to talk about energy(since her state has a lot of oil) if she was not sure about an issue and she did it all night.McCain, the self proclaimed maverick, is a 30yr Washington insider who voted 90% with Bush and is responsible for helping get us into this mess of an economy and foreign policy. We cannot stand four more years of bashing the middle class, enough.
Palin in just to cute for me...the winking...the down home talk...etc. I think I want someone with a little more dignity for my veepee. Also, if I hear again about her extensive experieance I will gag.
Joe Biden was amazing--not too condescending, but wrong, wrong, wrong. Sarah won hands down. She's only been on the national scene for 5 weeks and did an amazing job. She's intelligent and shows great character. She's not afraid to talk straight and tell you what she thinks. Biden is same ole same ole.
The Palin Wink will be like the Gore Sigh.

Silly and unprofessional.
Very interesting range of answers here!
Biden proved himself to me tonight, he made me proud to be an Obama / Biden supporter! I, too, am entirely sick and tired of Palin thinking ALL of America wants to be treated and/or referred to as Joe Sixpack or a Hockey Mom. Her world view is so, so, very limited. And when the bar that she needs to clear is "Don't Mess Up Too Badly" well, you're not in the same league as the real players. Her responses were canned and practiced bullet points. "McCain and I will fight for you" what is this, a community college debate for commuter representative? She's all shape, no substance. All rhetoric, no material. In a few weeks, when Obama and Biden win the election, Sassy Sarah will go back to her job as governor of the least populated state in the country.

And here's a final word: Mavericks are fine in the movies, but they don't make good leaders. I don't want a maverick speaking for me to the rest of the world, I want an intelligent, learned, capable statesman.
I think we all; the media, analysts, campaign handlers and yes, we the audience set the bar so low for Palin, that she did in fact appear to have outperformed our expectations.  But is that where we are as a nation? Is that what a candidate for Vice President of the United States is measured on - simply to show up and recite from a over prepared and over coached script?  Come on, people, what ever happend to the concept of the "brightest and the best" of us ascending to public office.  There is too much as risk to even consider that Sarah Palin could assume the office of the Presidency, or even that of a political appointee.  There is nothing there there.
Does it surprise anyone that the MSNBC folks have posted 42 pro Biden comments and 10 pro Palin comments? Hmmmmmm? Believe me kiddies, there are plenty of comments for both to equally divide  if there was not an agenda.  And the execs can't figure out why there ratings continue to drop?
Wake up people, if it was a Biden-Palin ticket, there would be no question of who would win. It isn't about the past administration, it's about the future and these two have it down. Unfortunately, the two running for President don't have a clue.
Well, I am not from the United States but I find your elections fascinating and most entertaining - to say the least. I have been a fan of Pat Buchanan in the past but his purblind partisan support for the moral and cerebral inanity called Sarah Palin is something I find as confusing as it is astounding. While, I would support 100% the values Palin claims she supports - the minute she opens her brash and boastful mouth the incongruities abound. You know she is as alse as the silly winks she keeps giving to the camera. She is a nasty and foolish braggart that desperately needs to be sent back to the backwoods of Alaska as soon as possible. She has no respect for anything other than her unqualified belief in herself. She does all true conservatives a monumental diservice and she made Joe Biden, whom I have many issues with, look like a gentleman. May God help America that the day has come when such a grade-A, blue ribbon, genuine 'Made in America' mental and moral vacuum can make it on to the national stage as a serious contender for the office of Vice President of a once proud and powerful nation. I suppose this is what comes from following political correctness right through to its logical conclusion: disaster!
Palin clearly won! She's so down to earth and honest that most of you don't recognize honesty when you see or hear it. I guess you have been democrats too long.
Senator Joe Biden won the debate hands down.

Tell me who is General McClellan?

A heartbeat away from the presidency and she think this is the Commanding General in Afghanistan is this man:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_B._McClellan
I was really excited to hear that McCain/Palin supports equal rights for gays and lesbians.  I can't wait for them to sponsor legislation to prohibit discrimination in employment based on sexual orientation.

Wonder what Palin's evangelical "base" thinks about that?
To Steve Rogers:  I was actually impressed that Biden knew that Bosniak refers to Bosnian Muslims and that he knew the distinction.   He scores some extra-credit points on that one.
Sarah was gutsy and stood her ground! Personally I find her very refreshing. Biden is glib and boring.
She may have appeared "Folksy" to people on the east coast, but out on the other Coast, she comes across Real and honest. Frankly it's a nice change from the typical WA elites.
One of the responders wondered, "Why are the message supporting Governor Palin not being posted?" They're there if you look for them. However, there was very little to be said positively about Sarah Palin's performance. It was obvious she had absolutely no grasp of the complexity of the issues and very little knowledge of domestic and foreign policy.
Not to go off topic but have been flippin' channels since the debate and have not heard one apology to Gwen Ifill for doing what i thought was a very fair and admiral job moderating.
Sarah Palin displayed better debating style than Joe Biden. However, she confirmed to the American public that she has no knowledge of the relevant issues which makes her a poor choice for VP. Joe Biden showed he is knowledgable on domestic and foregin issues which makes him the better candidate for VP
I like Palin!  She appeared to be honest and simple-not complicated Washington or East Coast.  I felt that I could relate to her.  Washington and Wallstreet has some dishonest problems.  She spoke to me and I want to work to get American the way it should be; the way our forefathers wanted to see it. Let us not change the vision of our constitution.
Gov. Palin did a fine job. She doesn't speak in circles, she states her points and is clear on her positions. Sen. Biden rambles and his answers are  more typical of a seasoned politician filled with  double talk. It's sad about his family and I didn't think that Gov. Palin was rude or disrepectful towards him at any time during the debate.
Palin reminds me of a student trying to BS a homework assignment. Grade D-
I voted for Bush twice. I am a single male who lost his wife from cancer in 2003. I have a daughter who was a teenager at the time of her mother's death. I almost teared up hearing Biden talk about his family tragedy. It was so cold and selfish for Palin to go right on with her recital without showing any kind of human compassion for this man who lost so much. She showed her lack of sensitivity to us "Joe Six Packs." Her reaction was so not Christian. After she did this, it made her winking at the camera look so phony. She didn't win the debate. I will not vote for McCain. Everybody here know that I am right!
If the McCain camp is really behind their VP candidate, let her go on the news shows (like Meet The Press) like all other political candidates do.  What are they afraid of?  That we will see the truth, and see that the folksy governor is not intelligent enough for the ticket?  Biden won this debate hands down!  But did we expect anything different?
Liberal weenies, wake up, she put it all in prospective, dems= higher taxes, bigger government, defeatist attitude. Rep+ lower taxes, less government and a will to win.
Both candidates were well spoken, just in different ways.  Biden did some lying.  Palin came across to me as believing strongly in what she was saying.  Handled herself well.  People should look at Obama's past (if they can find the truth of it like a school registration record that shows his religion as Muslim) and ask if one with ties to people who hate us should be president.  A big resounding NO NO NO from me.  McCain has always been loyal and giving of himself to the people of this country.  He has my vote.
Sarah Palin is embarassing to Republicans.  The fact is you like her, but then you realize she did not answer the questions.  She was evasive and was totally insensitive to Senator Biden when he became emotional over death of his wife and child.  Then I realized this is a tough woman that can shoot a moose and never blink.  Fact is she is not capable of becoming VP or President.  She should stick to beauty pageants.
Prediction: John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin for the office of US Vice President will backfire on him. Not only will he not be President of the United States, but his political career is over. For good. This isn't a popularity contest. These people carve our futures--and we take their qualifications seriously. He traded fluff for substance--at our expense. He's political toast.
Well of course the Libs are for Biden and the conservs are for Palin. What all of these post show as most interesting is the several commited Republicans that have changed their minds after tonight and how no Democrats have.
PS: I wish that the democratic candidates would at least call out the republican ticket for its lack of imagination: Obama for change, then McCain for change; Obama has no experience; then suddenly a running mate with no experience; Obama wants to change Washington; guess what: Nope, it's McCain/Palin who will do that. I'm not buying a three-legged horse again.
wow! alot of jealous women on this board tonite.
Up until now I have wondered how the heck this woman could become mayor of even a small town let alone governor and perhaps (God help us) vice president. How could someone so obviously inept and just plain dumb have gotten so far in politics?  Tonight’s debate was the best she has come across publicly since her speech at the republican convention. I believe the reason for this is simple. In both cases she had a well written script in front of her to draw on. The reason she stated early on that she was not going to answer the questions the way they were asked, is because she flat out could not. Even her little cheat sheets couldn’t possibly contain enough info to allow her to do so and without them she is left to think on her feet or draw on her experience. That is why she not only avoided questions and/or gave rhetorical answers but she also recycled the answers she gave without even changing the wording very much at all. Bottom line; the only place this woman could effectively act as president, is in the type of fictional movie scenario Matt Damon alluded to, because then she will have writers to tell her what to do and what to say. That way if she accidentally blows everything to hell, at least the director can just yell “cut.”
Best overlooked line in the debate...goes to Biden when he discussed McCain's health care policies being a "bridge to nowhere"! Odd that it was the one time Palin didn't pivot to her Alaska experience.
I started off watching the debate thinking that Biden would tear Palin apart on her very obvious lack of experience, and her lack of understanding of the real issues. But I was surprised, and pleased, to find that he acted like a gentleman, though he had ample opportunities to correct her mistakes, such as calling General McKiernan "McClellan" over and over again. Senator Biden exceeded MY expectations in that aspect, and certainly lived up to them in every other aspect. I would be beyond proud to call him my Vice President.
On another note, I, like many others, found Governor Palin's behavior and remarks throughout the debate extremely disturbing. Her refusal to answer the questions that were asked, in my opinion, not only indicates her inability to discuss and even understand the issues that matter, but showed a cold arrogance that I believe is a dangerous quality for a VP candidate, someone who could possibly end up as the leader of this country, to have.
I think it is good a woman was chosen to run as a vice presidential candidate but what does gender have to do with ability?  If all that matters is having a woman elected whether she is qualified or not America has the right one in Sarah Palin.  She will continue evade all issues and wink away the world as she did in the debate.
Oh wow.  I just watched this thing called a debate. First and fore most what on earth was Obama thinking in picking this person Joe Biden?  Had Biden been called upon to testify in front of his own judicial committee, he would have fried himself on his plagiarism and comments about Obama not being suitable to lead this country.  Obama should have put this thing to bed by picking a person in Hillary that had rightfully earned a place at this debate.  Really this would be over.    Instead Obama left the door open to McCain to select a woman who has actually done something and earned her own way and not through any appointment or because of who she was married to. True personal grit and empowerment.  Then she proceeds to take Joe Biden to school on Iraq, energy, health care and taxes.  She is a true outsider, I know you have to say she is stupid because she is a republican, this is a standard response since the days of Lincoln, and it seems a bit overused.  On the other hand she left so much information and material on the table about Biden’s and Obama’s record that you have to wonder why she didn’t pull the big guns out, so to speak.  She could have hurled Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd at Biden along with Obama’s trophy earning trough eating dinner table called Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  She also should have collared Biden on his vote in 1973 in voting against the Alaska pipe line. Could you imagine today what our country would be going through had his position won.  Also she should have tagged both Biden and Obama with losing ideas on Iraq.  First Obama would have been out of Iraq prior to the surge (March 2007) so we would have surrendered and had we simultaneously followed Biden’s recommendation we would have broken Iraq into three separate territories, Shiite, Sunnis and Kurds.  Wow there is an idea we are glad didn’t come to pass.  Yikes.  Additionally she should have boxed Biden into a corner on the fact that a tax rebate to 95% of the people is a farce since only 65% of the people actually pay taxes, no real discussion on income re-distribution.  Biden and Obama are clearly a one trick pony continue to discuss how McCain is a three-peat of Bush, the message is one that they need to deliver because they have nothing new it would appear.  Biden is a solid international spokesperson and can serve this country just not as Vice President.  Palin clearly won this debate on so many levels.
very intersting to read the posts and the tones from the different party supporters. There seems to be much nastier overtures from Palin fans to those who write positive statements reagarding Biden and/or Obama. Bottom line Palin herself stated she wasn't going to answer the Moderator's questions (wow, wish I would've had those options)but when the bar is set low it's easy to jump over. Biden was good and did his job but honestly I don't think Gwen Ifell was a very good moderator. She didn't keep the answers to questions asked or do many follow up questions.
