Who won the town hall debate?

Posted: Tuesday, October 07, 2008 11:30 PM by Sam Go

MSNBC hosts and commentators reacted on-air following the town hall debate between Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain. Below, are some of the highlights of their responses.

Chris Matthews
This debate had a lot more substance than you could have imagined and not as much of the character attacks that we feared would overtake this debate.

McCain on Obama, brought up taxes and said, “You can’t trust this guy. He lies.” He made the argument that we’ve seen different incarnations of Obama's tax plan, and that Obama was not leveling with voters that the economy is bad.

Barack Obama, meanwhile, talked about lobbyists and the evil thereof, presumably alluding to the Keating Five.  He also made news by going after AIG  and how they spent $400,000 on a luxury retreat in California. Obama now wants them to give the money back to the government, if only from that junket and even wants all their executive fired.

It was interesting too since there were bizarre moments when McCain took a shot at the moderator. When asked who he might consider Secretary of the Treasury, out of nowhere, he said, “Not you, Tom.” We have to figure that one out.

They showed a big difference on health care – on whether it’s a right or a responsibility – and I think Obama got that right. We as a society believe we have a right to health care. He had the right definition and he will win that argument.

And to use a Sherlock Homes term, “the dog didn’t bite.” Of the hour and a half of the debate, the assignment that McCain’s running mate has been carrying out for the past four days – associating Obama with Bill Ayers, 26 years later -- we saw none of that. It tells us that McCain is not personally comfortable with that kind of attack.

I think that’s going to get a lot of attention: John McCain would not stick it to his rival on the very issue that his campaign has been.

In the end, this debate was not a game changer for Sen. McCain. Because in tenor and appearance, Sen. Obama is gifted. He has a smile that seems to disarm, even when attacks are ferocious. McCain’s smile has a slightly menacing quality which makes you wonder what he’s thinking.

Obama comes across as a debonaire even under attack. I think he’ll stay in the lead.

Rachel Maddow
My impression of the debate was that Obama was not looking for a fight, and Sen. McCain was. Both candidates were confident, but McCain seemed edgy, even taking on the moderator Tom Brokaw, and once interjecting while Obama was speaking.

It left me with the sense that McCain was swinging and missing.

He may also regret talking about “joking with an old veteran-friend” when he sang “Bomb, bomb Iran,” because his campaign later adopted the same Beach Boys song, “Barbara Ann” as a campaign theme song. So if he meant it as a joke, he has a weird way of showing it.

Pat Buchanan
I agree with some of Rachel’s analysis but not all of it. McCain did come in with more heart and fight. He was the aggressor, as he needed to be, coming in behind the polls.  He threw punches and scored more points. But I also thought that he slipped on some of the punches.

I thought he won last time, and he did better today than he did at the last debate. He smiled, he looked at his opponent, and he talked to the audience.

Obama meanwhile, also came back very tough on some of the attacks and pointed out McCain’s statements on Iran and North Korea right after McCain questioned Obama’s judgment and words.

At times, Sen. Obama seemed a bit too laid back. It felt like he could have responded harder at certain times. But the Democrat was clearly not knocked out. Barack also succeed. He came off as presidential, a cool customer, and unfazed by these attacks. He gave people the assurance that he isn’t “some radical.”

Keith Olbermann
In the history of American politics, you would be hard pressed to find any candidate who after not looking his opponent in the eye in their first debate, finally chose to do so in their  second debate, but only to condescendingly refer to him as “that one.”

You would also be hard pressed to find any candidate who said of Social Security, "We are not going to be able to provide the same benefit for present-day workers... that present day retirees have today."

You would also be hard pressed to find a candidate who thought he would gain benefit from a format that him walk around a room like an ailing man, winding up walking directly in front of the moderator's camera as the moderator is trying to say good night.

At least you would be hard pressed to find any candidate who did those things... and wanted to win.

Senator McCain is ostensibly running on the McCain/Palin ticket, but had at least three references to the Connecticut Democrat turned Independent. One would be forgiven for thinking it might be the McCain/Lieberman ticket.

McCain is up to his neck in toxic campaign waste of his own creation. His choice tonight was to (a) attack Obama in person, with sleaze and to risk looking irresponsible and even irrational and (b) if he didn’t attack, he would risk looking hypocritical.

But though McCain's tone seemed to be vaguely reminiscent of his own campaign's weekend of descent into the muck, there was not a mention of any of the subjects or people about whom Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin obsessed.

Obama, meanwhile, was playing from ahead: was he cautious or defensive? The Democrat tonight was not just the first candidate to mention 9/11 directly tonight, he was the only candidate who did so. And for a second consecutive debate, Sen. Obama was running against not only Sen. McCain but eight years of President George W. Bush.

obama won for looking and acting more presidential.  he looked at the people, interacting with them and seeming to really enjoy talking to the people, while mccain looked uncomfortable and not liking to be in the room.  and did anyone notice that at the end of the debate, obama was interacting with the people shaking hands and taking pictures with everyone, while mccain was not around.  Was that just my perception or was that real??
A few times now and again tonight. Senator McCann said,"I know how to get Osama Ben Laden, and when I become president, I'll get him. I say, whats the secret, why hasn't he told our generals or our President. So I guess if he doesn't win the election, he takes the information with him. Why hasn't anyone picked up on this.
No, John McCain did not win. He wanted to throws jabs at Obama, but his arms can't reach. Better yet, after reading the FACT check. Again, he was wrong. He and Sarah need to get together and get there acts straight. She is saying on thing, he is saying another. It seems like the Republican Party is always in an uproar and ready to fight. They are never calm. Also, McCain wanted to throw in Bill Ayers in but I'm sure he was told not too due to his encounters and interactions with the current president. What do you call the Iraq War. My husband served two terms and did not see a sense in going. Some of the soldiers are bored and have no purpose of staying. So in other Words, tell McCain to go and sit down and choose a house to live in for his family and Sarah's clan. I feel so sory for Trig,, the baby never have on shoes, nothing on his head, always in the smallest sister arm. That is sad. Sarah take care of your baby.
I don't know if you all missed this, but I didn't.  Just after the debate and during the meet and greet with each other and the attendees, Obama went to shake McCain's hand.  McCain wouldn't take Obama's hand!  Intentional or a fluff? Looked intentional to me.
Albert, I picked up on McCain's statement that he knows how to get him. I also, immediately thought, 'well, why hasn't he told anyone so we just go get him?' Maybe is just more idle talk :( Boo!
GO OBAMA! he did so well, he's very charismatice.  I hope he wins, again, GO OBAMA!!
Obama looked very presidential tonight. In contrast, McCain looks like a tired old man.
After Sen. McCain said that one of his heroes was Ronald Reagan, I quickly decided that I would vote for Sen. Obama on November 4th.
Mccain won this one again.  Osama Obama is anti-American sleeze and evil.  Look at his friends.
Leaving economics aside, all I can say is that Obama did not use or make a single note during the debate. McCain was just the opposite. He was checking notes and writing things down. Obama delivered off the cuff. That impressed me. I was undecided till 7:35pm (Pacific Time) today. No more. I will vote for Obama.I will also get my family to vote for him. And, he will win.
Albert:

The reason no one picks up on McCain's lie is that no one really believes it.  And I was delighted to see him tap dancing on the third rail of American politics tonight saying that you wont get out of social security what you put in.  Yee haw!  Hold on tight, McCain is crashing a campaign this time.
The biased media is doing their dammdest to get Obama elected. They gloss over him and hit McCain with sledgehammers. We, the common people dont stand a chance with media that is "supposed" to be unbiased. What a joke!
McCain did not give one straight answer and he keeps saying "My Friend" but it comes out like a bad word for some reason every time he said it.  He says he will fix everything but doesn't give one answer as to how.  He says he wants to help everyone but "HOW?" where is the money going to come from? What is he going to do about the deficit? NO ANSWERS FROM HIM...
Al, we did pick this up!!! Also McCain said he could fix Social Security. Said it was easy. "We all have to work together." No substance. He also did not deny the statement by Obama regarding the 4 Billion Dollar tax benefit to big oil companies. Overall, McCain was vague, and in many cases repeated what Obama had said.
McCain clearly lost the debate
We are all doomed.
McCann took so many shots he started swinging on the ref (Tom Brokaw)
What?  Obama won for "looking presidential"?  Is that the job description, just to look the part?  Obama supporters seem unable to look past the surface on everything, while blaming conservatives for being racist.  Who's being shallow here?
Why didn't Obama correct McCain's incorrect quote of his Hero?  "WALK softly and carry a big stick"
Obama was the clear winner. Not only did he look presidenital, his demeanor has "I'm ready to be commander in chief," all over it. McCain just reminds me of a bitter old man and he shows it with his erratic temperment. The one comment that will stick out in my mind is referring to Senator Barack Obama as "that one." There is nothing presidential in the thought process that was used to make that statement.
As a republican, I have to say that Sen. Obama won the debate tonight, and has my full support to win the presidency.  Sen. McCain showed no respect for Sen. Obama has he refered to him as "that one" and was pacing the stage when Sen. Obama was speaking.
I would like to revisit the question about a scenario that if Iran attacked Israel, would the US attack Iran or wait for UN okay. The question wasn't how to prevent an attack, but what if this would happen.  The answer from both Senators should have been a resounding, YES, The US will retaliate for an attack on Israel. We do not have to wait for approval from the UN to protect a friend of the US.
I just heard fineman say that the "that one" statement wasn't racial. I am a 54 year old white guy that grew up in NC and the rule was when you couldn't say N*****, you just said "that one" (or more acurately, that'n). Lots of people won't get that this was racist and like the comments I heard on the show wrtie this off as an old guy. Old guys grew up in a racist America and this is what is normal to them This is a note from a Texas newspaper from a week or so ago.

From Letters to the Editors @ Fort Worth Star-Telegram -

How racism works--

What if John McCain were a former president of the Harvard Law Review? What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class? What if McCain were still married to the first woman he said "I do" to? What if Obama were the candidate who left his first wife after she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Michelle Obama were a wife who not  only became addicted to pain killers, but acquired them illegally through her charitable organization? What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard? What if Obama were a member of the "Keating 5"? What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?

This is what racism does:  When there is a color difference, it covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another.

- Kelvin LaFond, Fort Worth

Both did well; we finally have two candidates we can vote for but McCain was unable to change the course of the election and it common knowledge that a tie goes to the frontrunner.  Obama won.
This was the first time I have been really impressed by Barak Obama. He seemed very presidential and knowledgeable. McCain, on the otherhand, proved to me...once and foreall...that he is a grouchy old man who is out-of-touch and says crazy things. "We need to build a bunch of nuclear powerplants"--WHAT?! He's off his proverbial rocker!
President McCain won this debate and showed spirit and strength by being on his toes most of the night, just like a good fighter. Mr Obama looked like a guy who wants Government to take care of all of us because we can't take responsibility to make our own decisions and be held to the decisions we make. Mr. Obama is a Socolist and President McCain is for freedom.
OH WHAT A NIGHT!.......I AM SO HAPPY FOR THE FUTURE OF THIS GREAT COUNTRY, I CAN HARDLY WAIT! GO OBAMA!
Obama - hands down. McCain was condescending. Even more annoying then his "that one" comment was his overuse of the "my friends" line. McCain is not my friend. I have absolutely nothing in common with someone whose spouse runs up a $750,000 credit card bill - and then can afford to pay it.
Hi, Chris,

I thought that Obama won. McCain's poilitical director, how obnoxious can you be? McCain made that remarks "That one" as a racial remark. It is obvious throughout McCain's campaign, especially with the mud slinging has lead me to believe that the McCain/Palin ticket are racist. The first debate I felt it, but the second debate, put the penny in the slot for me.

His political director is the exact same person who help do him in with President Bush, now I can see why there are negative campaigning going on.

These people are blind, and "out-of-touch" with what American truly needs and wants in a President and Vice-President as far as "character" is concern. Senator Obama has been totally consistent, we needs consistency, not sponataneous and erected behavior and judgment. If Mr McCain would just see what we need as a nation and get with the times. Maybe there could be some substance with what he is trying to convey.

In conclusion, McCain needs to just give up.

Thank you for your times and the considerate.
Nobody has told me how they are going to stop
the PORK BARRELING and control the corporate
greed and executive arrogant at the expence of
the public such as just what happened with AIG
There was one question in the debate (I don't recall exactly what it was right now) that Obama used to refute McCain's previous claim rather than answer the question. McCain started his answer with "I will actually answer the question" and then responded to Obama's non-answer. This was right after Obama asked if he could refute McCain's answer, so everyone knew what he was doing.
Did anyone notice that McCain beat it out of there as soon as possible?  He didn't shake hands with Barack, he didn't bother to meet and greet people like Michele and Barack both did.  Cindy McCain shook a couple of hands and then went to give her husband a hug and they then were gone.

In contrast, the Obamas went out of their way to talk to people, having their pictures taken with people and just listening and talking.

Another disturbing thing, is this new bailout plan of McCain's, even Romney one of his confidants didn't know about it after the debate.  More of McCain's grasping as straws, trying to do anything to win.

I also noticed that McCain didn't carry any of the personal attacks into the debate.  It makes him look two-faced, attacking behind Barack's back but not saying the same things to his face, where he would have a chance to refute the charges.

McCain looked and talked at times like a little wind up toy, the same things, over and over.   And lets not even talk about the "that one". comment.

And to those that think that Barack Obama isn't American, hello his mother was American and he was born in Hawaii.  That makes him an American, end of discussion.

For those that insist on making fun of his name, calling him Osama Obama, really don't you have anything better to do.
McCain chose wisely to leave out any mentioning of Ayers or Wright.  McCain has skeletons waiting to be let out of his closet if he chooses to start the blame game.  Overall, Sen. McCain had opportunities to rattle Obama, but he couldn't find that right angle.  Meanwhile, Sen. Obama took the jab about being an irresponisble talker and leveled McCain with a very strong and resounding counter
Obama seemed more relaxed and answered on the cuff.  McCain once again used the same tactic of relying on his military record and his supposed great knowledge of "winning with honor" and not accepting defeat.  Has he ever heard of compromise and diplomacy? The man came off fanatical, not to mention Palin the loose cannon.  Go Obama!
McCain mentioned Warren Buffett as a potential Treasury Secretary. Interesting, since Buffett is one of Obama's chief economic advisors and has endorsed Obama. Obama also consults with Robert Ruben, Paul Volcker and Larry Summers. McCain actually pointed out one of Obama's greatest strengths: all the great minds of the country are supporting and advising him. McCain's economic advisor? Phil Gramm! The deregulator most responsible for today's financial train wreck!
McCain hates two things.  Talking about his OWN confusing and very much hated healthcare plan in any detail (did you notice he used the old debater trick of over praising the question poser eating up clock time) and association with the republican president for the last 8 yrs George Bush.

Why disassociate so much from your party choice, the man YOU voted for and the President of 8 yrs?  I got to thinking about that.  I thought about how Bush got into office 4 yrs ago on the same premise McCain now desperately clings to.  1. I have a steady hand, I have been at the wheel.  2.  I have lots of experience and know what i'm doing as opposed to this "new" guy.

It worked out so bad in McCain's eyes, he and Palin wince when GB's name is referenced to the point that the only praise GB has gotten in the debates has been from the democratic nominee's.

I guess running under the guise (as McCain to me seems to be solely doing) that I have been here before and I have a steady hand is not all it's cracked up to be?  You need ideas, you need potential, You need the man Buffet spoke to and said "this is the guy", you need someone who has diplomacy, who doesn't wink every other question but has trusted advisors who he fricking listens to.

You need Obama.  I've already had a maverick for the last 8 yrs, and look how that turned out?  Ask McCain if you don't believe me... assuming he will even acknowledge a guy named George Bush even exists.
Barack clearly won tonights debate. His answers were clear consise and suscint.  He displayed calmness and when needed sparred wittingly.  I was particularly impressed that he was on his toes about the AIG fandango in California and hope there are some people fired.  Finally, McCain was so obviousley agitated and when caught off guard looked like someone who was ready to blow a gasket.  It annoys me when he says "my friends" please...we're citizens!
I don't understand where the line is drawn between democrats and socialists.  How is healthcare a right?  Your RIGHT is that you are allowed to go get a job that provides healthcare or pay for it yourself.  Everyone has the RIGHT to not buy a 46" plasma and instead pay for their healthcare (and don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about).  You set your priorities, don't let the government set mine.  It's not really that hard to grasp.
I wonder if anyone noticed that McCain walked around and made gestures behind Obama while he was talking.  I caught it a couple of time.  (He made hand and facial gestures that were very unbecoming.)  To refer to Obama as "that" man over there was very disrespectful as well as his never sitting down while Obama spoke.  McCain's lies worry me.  If he becomes president would he lie to the public each day and do sneaky and underminding things like the Bush administration did?  I think he would.  McCain is scary!
Obama... Hands down winner.

Bad news: McCain called him "that one"
Good news: He didn't call him "that boy"

Bad news: we sufferd through Papa Bush then suffered through Baby Bush.
Good news: looks like we won't have to suffer through
Grampa Bush.
"That One" will win the presidency!!!
"That One" won the debate!!!
"That One" is not "My Friends" friend, Thank God!!!
Clearly, Obama won. There is no debate about that, although you will not get that information on Fox News
All the respected anchors agree that is was a decided victory for Obama. Tonight I saw an old man grasping at anything to ease the loss. I had hoped for a more prepared McCain with vision and a message for America. What I got was more of the same I've had for the past eight years. I will vote for Obama for sure.
I was impressed with the presidential poise, demeanor, and calm of Sen. Obama;  by contrast,  Sen.  McCain  appeared angry, irritable,  and edgy.  He did not inspire confidence.  He appeared old,  and his ideas appeared tired, as well.
Obama won again. Let us see what the Mccain campaign comes up with next. Most likely race which will mean the death to his campaign.  Oh and John in Illinois? Not worried about your state Buddy, it is already BLUE!
I was offended a couple of times.  When McCain talking to Oliver and first saying he would probably not know about Fannie Mae till recently, was bad enough.  Then to tell Oliver that we need to work on plans to keep Allen from losing his home, assuming that Oliver did not own a home.  Talk about a oops, or not caring.  I could not believe he said "that one" about Obama either.
Senetor Obama was the better actor because that'what he does best but Americans this is not Hollywood. If you want flashiness and a lot of smoke,Obama is your guy.John McCain is the better choice.I am pretty sure that the American people are smarter then that but maybe not???my prediction is that if Obama gets elected it will come down as one of the biggest mistake this country has ever made! Please just think about it!
The media also loves Sarah,so what are you saying?McCain is to blame for not delivering, not Obama. If McCain would give his so-called straight talk then maybe he would get the attention he so despartly need. But truthfully,if it wasn't for Sarah he would be way behind, even though she don't know anything.
McInsane/Caribo Barbie is in a "death spiral" and picking up speed and I am ejoying every second of it!  The 3rd debate will be a total act of desparation for Gramps.
McCain is clearly more presidential.  Obama is clueless of the real issues.  Being vague is all he has because that's all he can muster.  I am sad we have such a poorly educated population that we cannot separate McCain from Bush.  Why not get ready for Obama and Lewinsky? Go McCain!!
I watched the town hall debate and the first debate
there is no one better than Obama macain he is been washington for the last 26 years and still he does n't get it . also if you seen the debate he has no plan and even no idea about any thing its a wasting the American people time. senator Obama's plan is work and for 90 % of american's. also senator Obama is a highly educated and true american example and he is a good leader . So he is the one and the only can understand the American people.
god bless him and his family
Barack Obama definitely won, he did not let me down.  He is connected and on target with the issues.  All I can say for senior McCain is, DESPERADO, WHY DON'T YOU COME TO YOUR SENSES?  The ways of old must go!
I thought Obama hit it out of the park tonight. McCain appeared off, stiff and almost robotic. Obama is much more presidential.
I applaude him for not attacking Gov. Palin, who has the capability of being a heartbeat away from the presidency as my 13 year old nephew. Check out her youtube address to the Independent Alaskian Party, whom her HUSBAND was apart of for many years. It seems her true view is Palin First, Alaska second, Truth Honest and Dignity and Country come after everything else.
The change we need is Obama, who went of the attack after the Palin McLame ticket went down in polls. And he had promised us a "clean campain". Geez, golly darn it; how times have changed. If you want a smart, calm, cool, slow hand then its Barack and Joe all the way. If not, shame on you! McSame & Failin are fakes, wanting to only further their political careers at their families (if not their souls) price.

Obama & the Great Joe Biden '08
Sen. McCain did indeed refuse to shake Sen.Obama's hand following the debate and instead passed Sen. Obama on to Cindy McCain to shake Obama's outstretched hand.  Doesn't that say something about character and the willingness to 'cross the aisle'?
