Why not root for the Phillies?

by Chris Matthews

Newsweek had a down arrow in its Periscope column this week at the very prospect of the Phillies playing Tampa Bay in the World Series. It's followed by an "Ugh" - you know, "ugh" at the chances of it being an exciting Series.

Classic. If the Yankees or the Mets had made it to the Series - or the Red Sox - it would have been a dynamite Series. Why?

Because the Yankees or the Mets or the Red Sox made it. That's why.

Look, in all the years the Phillies didn't make it to the play-offs, much less to the Series, I rooted for the Red Sox as my East Coast team. That emotional time right after 9/11, I yelled like mad for the Yanks against the Diamondbacks. I've even rooted for the Mets when they made it to the World Series. You know: "love they neighbor." "If you're not with the one you love, love the one you're with."

So why is it that I haven't gotten so much as a phone call this October from my Boston and New York buddies rooting for my hometown team? Where's the reciprocity here? Where's the East Coast solidarity when our turn comes around? What do we get for our fabulous pitching, explosive hitting and a different hero every night?

Here's what: We get a downward arrow from Newsweek, followed by an "Ugh," followed by a series of cheering-on phone calls that never get made.

The next time you catch someone dumping on the over-the-top Philly fans, ask the guy "When was the last time you rooted for us?"

Chris, huge fan of yours and I couldn't agree more. Here's a shout for ya though man. Go Phillies!

Looks like they are going to seal the deal tonight.. So Pre-congratulations to your hometown Chris.
Hey Chris: I'm a Boston fan....but I'm rooting for your Phillies in this one. I hope they pull it out tonight....and I hope it makes your day. Thanks for rooting for my team when they're in the running....And thanks for bringing us the most interesting hour on telvision. We love ya man!  ;-)
Hi Chris:

Im a met fan and its not so much I'm not rooting for the phillies. It has more to do with the two year collapse of the mets. Which is why I'm not watching the series at all, however for you I will say go Phillies
Dear Chris,
We are diehard Fenway Faithfuls who are absolutely rooting for the Phillies in the World Series! We know that miracles can happen ..so keep the faith!!!!
We love your show and watch every night.  Thank you for your insight and intelligent dialogue.
                       Go Phillies!!!

Maybe...just maybe...if the Phillies were playing the Taliban in the World Series, I'd root for the Phillies.  Maybe.  But until the Taliban gets a better bullpen and a decent shortstop, it's a moot point.  So in the meantime: Go Rays!
Dear Chris:

How about those Phillies?  Now my husband really hates me, haha.  He turned me into a baseball fan with the Cardinals.  His whole family have been lifelong Cardinal fans and through the years have enjoyed watching the games and rooting along with him, but he has created a monster.  Being from PA, I am rooting for the Phillies and he is rooting for Tampa, hah just another friendly contention between us.  Anyway, loyal fan of your show.  Go Phillies.

Chris,
I've lived in RI 22 years and am now a diehard Red Sox fan.  But, I grew up 20 miles from Philly and learned about baseball from my Dad. He lived there all his life and fortunately got to see them win it all in 1980.  There ARE people out here rooting for the Phillies.  Philly needs and deserves a championship! GO PHILLIES!!My favorite national league team.  You Gotta Believe!
Hey Chris, Im originally from the Boston area and a die hard Sox fan, when i was a kid i loved the Phillies, Richie Ashburn, Robon Roberts etc, we watch you show every night, keep up the good work and GO PHILLIES!!!
Chris,
I totally agree with you but I must say that I would like the Rays to win the series (I'm an A's fan).  I would like to see a new team with a previously awful record do something good for their state.  The series are exiting either way, though, and with Pena's clutch hit, and the rain delay, the rest of the series promises to be interesting.

btw, I'm 15 so I might be a little biased against the Phillies because they are so old. :-)
Hey Chris,

I'm a life long Yankees fan, and I am cheering for the Phillies... and Barack Obama!
Dear Chris...Buddy Greco here...Been trying to reach you. From one guy from Philly to another. My wife and I are your biggest fans. In case you might not know who I am, I am the singer/jazz pianist Would love to E mail you or have a phone number where I can reach you. I have a supper club here in Cathedral City. BIG PHILLIES FAN...You are the BEST.........
Hey Chris,
I grew up in Philly and now live in NY,a Philly fans are as die hard as any Yankee or Red Sox fans so I agree they should have their day in the sun. Whoever does the Rays payroll (the lowest in  baseball) should be in charge of the national budget.
GO PHILLIES
from WI  !!!
Sorry it took so long.

Obama 08
Hi Chris,

I don't know what it is with the baseball fans I know. They all want the Rays this year. I think it is the fact they were so bad last year and have come so far this year. A Cindarella story makes people feel good like the 2004 Red Sox.

I'm a die hard Red Sox fan who's first game ever seen was at Fenway on opening day 1968; I got a Red Sox tat on my shoulder after the 2004 season, I was so proud.

But I'm rooting for the old school Phillies this year. You aren't alone. Enjoy the wins and ignore the ignorant ;-)
Chris,
Always the great program. Die hard Red Sox fan cheering hard for the Phillies (Robin Roberts lives!). Let's get silly in Philly!
Hello Chris,

I'm a Mets fan, and I'm cheering for the Phillies, and of course Barack & Joe...go go go !
Chris,
Both teams have been great but I'm a Rays fan!!  And it's unfortunate that because it's not the Sox, Mets or Yanks that the Series hasn't gotten the same hoopla...in any event, again, GO RAYS!
Hi Chris!
Thanks for the great show!  I'm a Red Sox fan, but I am rooting for the Phillies!  You have more support out there than you realize!
Also, Obama/Biden on November 4.  Come on folks, get out there and vote.  Bring everyone you know with you if they haven't already voted early.  GET OUT THE VOTE!
Thank you!
Hello, I live in Philadelphia and the excitement in the air is so thick you could cut it with a knife. We Philly fans have waited sooo long for another World Series win, and this time we are gonna get it! Us TRUE non-bandwagon fans deserve it! Go Phillies!! Jaime from Phila, PA
Chris, Not a baseball fan at all--- but huge fan of yours!  I will be sure to root for the Phillies along with you!!!   :)   ((AND OBAMA---Let's hope the country is FINALLY heading for a real CHANGE & some real HOPE!))
Me too, lifelong Yankee fan, but go Phillies and you rock Chris, I love your show. Thanks for always saying what you feel and admitting when you feel you made a mistake.love ya

Apparently, "eastern solidarity" only applies east of the Hudson River. It's Philadelphia, which has been deemed an afterthought from a New York perspective for 200 years and has in more recent decades been eclipsed by the high-tech yuppies of Boston. Philly is negatively perceived as a city of overly ethnic, working-class lunkheads (the "yo" mentality). It's no wonder its teams are viewed the same way (and also unjustly lumped together; Phillies fans are tough, but higher on the evolutionary scale than their Eagles counterparts).

The Phillies have a lot going for them -- some talented stars, a fine new ballpark (though one wishes it were in Center City, not marooned in the desolate south Philly sports complex) and one of the great baseball announcers in Harry Kalas (who, unfortunately, is probably better known nationally for his NFL Films work). And with but one World Series title to their credit (still one fewer than their fellow pre-expansion Cubs and Indians), not to mention more than 10,000 losses, they are certainly an underdog story of their own. But they're not New York or Boston, so the Ivy chattering class doesn't care (even Philly's Ivy institution, the University of Pennsylvania, is disparaged by its counterparts).
Chris, I moved to rural north-eastern Maine from New Jersey with my family when I was 4. I'm 34 now. I'm the only person in my family not born in Maine. My Dad was a Mets fan. My uncle was a Yankees fan. My brother is a Red Sox fan. Baseball games were always "interesting" at my house. They all used to make fun of me for being a lifelong Phillies fan from "Away"....Who's laughing now?!?!?!?!!! So, don't worry, you're being represented in New England juuuust fine. I've got enough pent up Phillies Phanaticism for both of us. I got your back.....GO PHILLIES!!!!! WOOT!
Go Phillies!
Chris,
Checking in from West Valley City Utah,
GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Phillies.  I am a long suffering Pittsburgh Pirates Fan and have enjoyed watching the Phillies beat the odds and the media favorites.
The guy from Bronxville NY sounds a litte jealous that none of his teams even made the playoffs.  Sorry his allegiance lies outside the USA - but we don't need him anyway.  Go Phillies!!
Chris I live in the NYC area for 25 years now after growing up around Princeton NJ where I was between the Yankees and Phillies. It is amazing to me to find that no one around my area is following or interested in the World series one guy told me it was a relief not to have his team in the series. I find it un-American to not get behind a team. They really about baseball they are only about the concept of their team. Being a tennis player and skier I relate to the amazing ability of these talented people who are the best in the world at what they do. Come on Route for your team go phillies
Hey Chris - I'm a Connecticut girl transplanted to Minnesota 37 years ago. I have always rooted for any east coast team playing in the series, except when the Twins played (about 20 years ago !!) I'm with you, so Go Phillies !!
I watched you make this plea last night on the repeat show, trying to find something to watch after Game 5 rained-out.

Give 'em hell, Chris. Fight the good fight!

Go, Phils!
Chris - here is why I am routing for the phillies. It's not even because I have lived in PA for the majority of my life and my teams are the sixers, the flyers and the eagles during their prospective seasons, it's because I cannot stand Tampa, or their fair weather fans. This is from personal experience. I was in attendance at game 7 of the stanley cup playoffs a couple of years ago between the flyers and the lightening. The lightening won and I was heartbroken, BUT I will tell you, I bought those tickets the SAME DAY as the game. Something totally unheard of it that game had been in PA. And after the game the group of us went out in Yebor City(or however you spell it) and started talking to the people celebrating their teams big win. Yeah - no one even KNEW any of their players names! They were celebrating something they knew nothing about. Phillies fans are die-hard loyals who watch every painful summer - all summer long. This team has an entire city, and most of a state behind it - filled with people who know the entire roster, the team history - everything. The Phillies and the Phillies fans deserve this win.
I fell in love with politics and baseball in 1960 as a nine year old girl in Beaver, PA. It was an over the top summer! Not only did I get to see JFK up close, but there was that awesome grand slam by Bill Mas in the World series. Since then every election and every series has had importance to me, it broke my heart last night that you of all people had to beg for Support for your great team. Slogg on Phillies.
Hey Chris,
I'm a huge fan of Hardball. I'm also a die hard Red Sox fan and as such, owe you an apology. I'm rooting hard for the Phillies in this one, not only because they deserve it, but the Rays bumped off my beloved Sox! GO PHILLIES!!!
Hey Chris,
Thanks for your comments Monday night on Hardball re: the Phillies in the Series.  In 1980 I was living and working at my alma mater, Penn State, with my then grad student husband.  I worked at a radio station in town writing ad copy.  Penn State's about evenly split between Philly and Pittsburgh people, but the Pittsburgh people have zero respect for Philly or their teams.  In 1979, I cheered my heart out and celebrated along with them when the "we are family" Pirates pulled off their exciting win; it was awesome to see Willy Stargell get their due.  In 1980, when it was the Phillies turn, I expected the same excitement and "hey, I'm happy for you" feeling from my co-workers and fellow Happy Valleyites.  But all I got was flak, and plenty of it.  I was not only saddened but really aghast at this lack of civility and humanity on their part.  Nothing is ever easy for Philly or its fans.  I'm hanging in there with you; it's truly the country's loss because it has been a great series.
I think even uber-Mets fan Keith Olbermann might be pulling for the Phils here. Oh Chris, by the way, if you run for the Senate in 2010, my vote is yours.
