Matthews: Obama will be 'the spirit that stirs the country'

We, Americans, live in the time of our presidents. As Franklin Roosevelt was to the 1930s and '40s, as Ike was to the '50s, Jack Kennedy to the '60s and Reagan was to '80s, Barack Obama will be to the oncoming 2010s. Like his predecessors he will give his name to our era. His will be the spirit that stirs the country.

Barack marked the instance of this new era late last night in Chicago. "Because of what we did on 'this' day, in 'this' election, at 'this' defining moment, change has come to America."

We awoke this morning to this new time, the time of Barack Obama and with it to the first crackle of his new leadership: the rustle of imminent high level appointments, the willingness to serve among the top ranks of available talent, all this heralding the arrival in Washington of a disciplined public service, of crisp, informed public action and, yes, more clearly than ever of, by and for the people.

Watch Barack Obama's complete speech.

Couldn't agree with you more, Chris. I came to Canada thirty three years ago and am a proud Canadian. For the first time last night I wished I could call myself an American. What a glorious moment and a new beginning for all Americans.
Thank you Chris for what you do..I was just listening to you on your show and felt the need to let you know how much I appreciate your opinion. I to think the election of President-elect Obama is historic, but I really believe it's people like you that have been instrumental in helping educate the public.. I am a 49 old white male, father of five (one son and four daughters), Insurance Agent, born and raised in Custer County, Idaho (maybe most conservative county in one of the most conservative states) and I am thrilled and excited to see the change of direction our country has decided to take.  My message to Democrats is this, though... Don't blow the opportunity.. Thank you again.. I will continue listening in.
I love your show and I thank you for the great coverage of the election.
we have just witnessed history with that acceptance speech.A great history in the making.Barrack is a leader that is destined to lead this nation.Nothing could stop it,evidenced by what he had to go through in the campaign and still got elected.I could not imagine a scrutiny more frenzied and hateful smear so persistent. But if one can stop a high speed train then destiny of a nation could be interrupted.
Chris, i just watched Hardball and you said Obama was almost "zen like" in running his campaign. I was so excited to hear that!

In the midst of the incredible high of the Obama victory we are being drowned in the hyperbole of the over analyizing of the campaign and subsequent election. Missing is the discussion of the "spiritual component" of what is going on now in America.  I believe that there is a raising of conscienceness accross the country--and the old political rules don't apply.  Yes, as Obama said in his historical message last nite, we are witnessing a new paradigm and a "new spirit" in this election.

I am not talking about religion. I am referring to spirituality. I realize this may be unfamiliar territory for many in the news media.  But please consider this as the "story that nobody is getting".

Obama has tapped into this, either intuitively or purposefully, and I believe it has played a huge part in his appeal to a wide cross section of Americans and consequentially his victory.

Hopefully, I will see and hear your conversation on the "spiritual aspect of the Obama victory" that will certainly light up the airwaves world-wide very soon on Hardball.

I appreciate your unique thoughtfulness and comments always on your show. It sets you apart from all others.

Sincerely,
Gregory Davis
Chris, on January 9, 2008 I became a US citizen; and, I can not say how timely it was for me to be a part of history by casting my vote for the first time in a major presidential election for Barack Obama. I must say Novemenber 4, 2008 at 10:00P.M. will forever be  monumental for this nation. May God bless my new country, the United States of America.
