It is frightening to think that there is a possibility of her becoming President. I thought she was disrespectful of Joe Biden and of Gwen by stating that she would not answer the questions the way the moderator wanted. She definitely was just reciting what has been pounded in her head in preparation. There is no way some of the words and thoughts that she spoke were her own. I am tired of her "cutesy" ways and the fact that she stated that she would like the VP to have more power really turned me off.
Who won the debate?

I was frightened by Palin's obvious memorization of set answers to questions she was going to answer whether they were asked or not. I was insulted by her "winking" at the camera so much and her "vacant" smile. What in the world would we be saying if Biden had done that. I was stunned by her inability to really hear Biden when he mentioned HIS FAMILY experience. She seems mean to me and actually sneered at a dignified senator. I was mad that she so easily will lie and I was disgusted that she wants to expand Cheney's role as veep. We are in a lot of trouble if this ticket wins.

I think Biden was clear, passionate and gracious to her. She did not deserve his good manners in retrospect. Eleanor Herndon, Greensboro, NC

Who won the debate?

Palin dutifully recited some of her talking points, and changed the subject or refused to answer questions when they didn't fit. For that she gets credit. But can anyone say with a straight face that she won the debate, that she passed the "commander in chief" test (in the event something happens to McCain)?

Biden demonstrated his vast policy knowledge as well as his heart. He also showed a masterful sense of diplomacy. He'd be a great VP.

Who won the debate?

Definitions of Maverick.. It was apparent to me that Palin was more like the old TV add "I'm not a Vice President, but I play one on TV." She obviously could only repeat coached statements, and could not answer questions. She is incapble of stating actual policy. I am tired of her trying to compare being the mayor of a town with 5,000 people to being the Vice President of the United States. She does not have what it takes to be Vice President and McCain showed very poor judgment in selecting her as his running mate. While I have serious disagreements with Biden and Obama on the war - I believe in a more immediate end to the illegal occupation of Iraq - I will have to vote for them next month as McCain/Palin scare the hell out of me.

Who won the debate?

I have very serious doubts as to the professional aspects that is required by a VP and Ms. Palin. That "Folksy" attitude makes me cringe. It reminds me of a person who is not intellectal and so they cover it up with the "Folksy" attitude. I believe Palin was heavily coached, case in point, when Biden talked in great length about the housing downfall & the bailout bill & it went back to her, she couldn't talk about that. She quickly turned the subject to energy, one of her supposed fortes. She skirted around the issues that matter to our country at this time, but seemed to hit her stride when foreign policy came up. It appeared she was coached. She is nothing but a pretty face & a puppet for the Republican party. If I was on the fence about who I was going to vote for, she just blew it for the Republican party. It was her job to keep Palin on task, and had she, nuance and thoughtfulness would have won out over blatant appeals to obscure notions of American exceptionalism (since when is a good thing?) and "maverickness."

Biden won hands down as a wonk, but Palin probably appealed to "mainstream America" because the Obama campaign made a decision, apparently, to avoid any attack or response to attack, likely because of gender. This, combined w/ Ifill's failure to duly moderate, allowed Palin to get away with a pretty nasty yet fluffy performance that moves me, at least, from the "pity" side of the meter to the "yuck."

Ifill should have anticipated and responded more strongly to her evasion, although perhaps her hands were tied by the recent "controversy" over her book. I have been a fan of Pat Buchanan in the past but his purblind partisan support for the moral and cerebral inanity called Sarah Palin is something I find as confusing as it is astounding. While, I would support 100% the values Palin claims she supports - the minute she opens her brash and boastful mouth the incongruities abound. You know she is as alse as the silly winks she keeps giving to the camera. She is a nasty and foolish braggart that desperately needs to be sent back to the backwoods of Alaska as soon as possible. She has no respect for anything other than her unqualified belief in herself. She does all true conservatives a monumental diservice and she made Joe Biden, whom I have many issues with, look like a gentleman. May God help America that the day has come when such a grade-A, blue ribbon, genuine 'Made in America' mental and moral vacuum can make it on to the national stage as a serious contender for the office of Vice President of a once proud and powerful nation. It was so cold and selfish for Palin to go right on with her recital without showing any kind of human compassion for this man who lost so much. She showed her lack of sensitivity to us "Joe Six Packs." Her reaction was so not Christian. After she did this, it made her winking at the camera look so phony. How could someone so obviously inept and just plain dumb have gotten so far in politics? Tonight’s debate was the best she has come across publicly since her speech at the republican convention. I believe the reason for this is simple. In both cases she had a well written script in front of her to draw on. The reason she stated early on that she was not going to answer the questions the way they were asked, is because she flat out could not. Even her little cheat sheets couldn’t possibly contain enough info to allow her to do so and without them she is left to think on her feet or draw on her experience. That is why she not only avoided questions and/or gave rhetorical answers but she also recycled the answers she gave without even changing the wording very much at all. Bottom line; the only place this woman could effectively act as president, is in the type of fictional movie scenario Matt Damon alluded to, because then she will have writers to tell her what to do and what to say. That way if she accidentally blows everything to hell, at least the director can just yell “cut.”

Who won the debate?

Best overlooked line in the debate...goes to Biden when he discussed McCain's health care policies being a "bridge to nowhere"! But I was surprised, and pleased, to find that he acted like a gentleman, though he had ample opportunities to correct her mistakes, such as calling General McKiernan "McClellan" over and over again. Senator Biden exceeded MY expectations in that aspect, and certainly lived up to them in every other aspect. I would be beyond proud to call him my Vice President.
On another note, I, like many others, found Governor Palin's behavior and remarks throughout the debate extremely disturbing. First and fore most what on earth was Obama thinking in picking this person Joe Biden? Had Biden been called upon to testify in front of his own judicial committee, he would have fried himself on his plagiarism and comments about Obama not being suitable to lead this country. Obama should have put this thing to bed by picking a person in Hillary that had rightfully earned a place at this debate. Really this would be over. Instead Obama left the door open to McCain to select a woman who has actually done something and earned her own way and not through any appointment or because of who she was married to. True personal grit and empowerment. Then she proceeds to take Joe Biden to school on Iraq, energy, health care and taxes. She is a true outsider, I know you have to say she is stupid because she is a republican, this is a standard response since the days of Lincoln, and it seems a bit overused. On the other hand she left so much information and material on the table about Biden’s and Obama’s record that you have to wonder why she didn’t pull the big guns out, so to speak. She could have hurled Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd at Biden along with Obama’s trophy earning trough eating dinner table called Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. She also should have collared Biden on his vote in 1973 in voting against the Alaska pipe line. Could you imagine today what our country would be going through had his position won. Also she should have tagged both Biden and Obama with losing ideas on Iraq. First Obama would have been out of Iraq prior to the surge (March 2007) so we would have surrendered and had we simultaneously followed Biden’s recommendation we would have broken Iraq into three separate territories, Shiite, Sunnis and Kurds. Wow there is an idea we are glad didn’t come to pass. Yikes. Additionally she should have boxed Biden into a corner on the fact that a tax rebate to 95% of the people is a farce since only 65% of the people actually pay taxes, no real discussion on income re-distribution. Biden and Obama are clearly a one trick pony continue to discuss how McCain is a three-peat of Bush, the message is one that they need to deliver because they have nothing new it would appear. Biden is a solid international spokesperson and can serve this country just not as Vice President. Palin clearly won this debate on so many levels.

Who won the debate?

very intersting to read the posts and the tones from the different party supporters. Governor Pallin is frightening because of her narrow minded thinking, her manifestation for control over people, her inability to think deeply about important and very meaningful issues and because she clearly doesn't care to know the issues (I won't answer your questions not because I can but because I am uninformed and can't and I do not chose to know). Biden would have to be overly nice to Gov. Palin as not to appear a bully. As a woman, I was insulted for Gov. Palin (and I don't even support her) and women everywhere - that in this day and time, and certainly in light of our current economic and world crisis that women who are at a place and time in history to stand up and show that they too can be effective leaders are denied a chance to be debated as equal candidates. If this had been a debate between two male VP candidates there would have been no cautions to be "nice" and maybe then we would have had a real opportunity to see if Gov. Palin really could talk the talk and walk the walk. Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, and other women should have spoken up before the debates to demand that Gov. Palin be treated as any other candidate and not given preferential treatment as a woman. Shame on the women for not demanding this. So what we got was a debate that was clearly well scripted and left no room for Gov. Palin to shine or dim. With practice anyone can memorize lines with great vigor and vim and Sen. Biden having to play nice instead of really challenging a candidate that could hold the second highest office of this land.

Who won the debate?

WHY DINT THE MODERATOR REQUEST ANSWERS FROM PALIN?
PALIN SUCCEEDED IN SETTING HER AGENDA, BY IGNORING THE QUESTIONS AND STICKING TO HER INDEX CARDS FOR HELP..
