The cold war has ended, we know communism is an ideology that doesn't work, and the new enemy is radical Islam. The war on terror will be necessary to fight for many years but we have other battles to be fought at home including a broken health care system, poverty, education and immigration. It makes me angry that my hard-earned tax dollars are paying to build the economies of foreign countries when I can barely afford to live. Also, my son is on his way to serve this country for people who neither understand or appreciate freedom or democracy.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

It is about time he will pay for what he did. 26 years of years of killings and mass executions and now he pays? He is as bas as a person can get. But, I don't even have a grain of trust in Bush and those republicans who give a new reason every day (still changing as we speak) to attack Iraq. The fact is that the social stucture in Iraq is run by religious thugs like Al-Sadr. To govern them and keep the country together, it will always take a bigger thug like Saddam and his brutal tactics. Once he is gone, we are now seeing the fighting that looks like street killings by rival gangs. If given a choice between and a secular but brutal Saddam and crazy religious fanatics like Al-Sadr (who are more brutal than Saddam),I choose the former than latter. Any leader who is like him, should be brought before the world's courts and stage and have pronouncment made and sentence carried out on behalf of mankind. This is for all of us believe it or not. I do see the impending execution as a ending of a legacy of hate. Though losing a life is a sad event, there is no mercy greater and no bigger gift that the people of the Iraqi nation need more than the closing of this chapter of their many years of torment and torture. I think the United States should not have abused the rights of fighting men and women and let nature take its course and end this tyrany of the wrath this person who deserves no name shall eventually get. We could have trained the citizens to form their own democracy and Bush being the pompous war monger that he is should have found another scapegoat but alas we are not able to turn the hands of time and his ignorance that also lead the to the death of many of our brave men and women who died for a cause not of our own, Bush will have the saddest legacy of a president and I am sure his ego will keep uttering the words of Hussien, like he did us a great favor even when NATO said there was nothing. Well maybe they had a 9 volt battery and to Bush thats cause enough to send our troops to die and this is something that bush should keep in his mind, Saddam killed millions and Bush's hands bleed red as well so he is not innocent himself. Sadly apointed by fixed ballots this was done and time can not fix the ills of both these men and history books will not allow us to forget either one of these men. I agree with the punishment and execution of Hussien and I also agree that Bush should be charged with crimes of Human Morality as he has none. I agree with that - I agree that he should be held accountable in a humane and just way.

WE in the US need to have a collective discussion -a serious one - about what we expect our role to be in the US in light of the Iraqi war. We need to decide what we have as resources when a country behaves as Iraq. Everyone in the global community needs to carve out what we expect our future to be and then uphold it.

I'm a democrat but I'm dissappointed in the democrats for highly criticizing the war but not offering an alternative to the sanctions. The sanctions weren't working and hadn't worked for over a decade. He was aloud to run amuck and, in essence, thumb their nose at the US and others. What are we to do?

We can't let a renegade national leader jeopardize the world economy by jeopardizing the oil fields and reserves nor can we let a national leader hold us hostage with them. Second to that, we cannot let a national leader cull out a race, or a religion, or any other faction and deem them "expendible" resulting in mass genocide.

I hear people say that we can't have a messianic view of our place in the world but neither can we stand by and let atrocities against humanity go unaddressed.

Perhaps Saddam's execution will provide some healing to the Iraqi people. Perhaps the healing will help them get past enough of the anger, pain, and hate so that they can possibly move forward in a more cooperative way to carve out a better nation for them all and their future. God willing.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

A member of the military was planning a coup, and he was caught and executed, and for that you think Hussein deserves to die? How can we be expected to point the way to a new moral order when we are engaging in the same brutality he practiced? Murder is murder. There is no distinction between methods or reasons.

I understand the need for retribution and closure for criminal acts is strong, but statements wishing for another human's death really do not strike me as any different than those from al-Qaeda.

It's necessary for humanity to strive toward enlightenment. You may dismiss that as unrealistic but we will never survive the next century believing violence and killing is justified in any circumstance. In the United States, treason is punishable by death too . Severe interogation? Now that sounds familiar don't it . Oh they never were tried for the crimes they were accused of, you say? Ask someone in US custody in Cuba or the other secret prisons across the world. When will we learn that the US does not have a very good track record when it comes to regime changes or who we support? Back in the late 80's Bid Laden was actively sponsored by the CIA in his fight against Russia's occupation of Afghanistan. Were you in the CIA then? Anyway, should Hussien die for his crimes? yes he's probably getting what he deserves. But here in the US, we don't have the moral highground.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

I am so sick over everyones comments regarding how we (the united states) are the ones that are executing Saddam...he is back in Iraq!! His own country is hanging him, not us. Thy shall not kill, you are right, if you live in America, but he is not a practicing Christian obviously, he does not play by the same rules we do. He deserves to die. No I do not believe he should be put in prison for the rest of his life and let that country that he hurt so bad support him, he does not deserve it. While I am saddened by the soldiers that have been killed, they die with the greatest honor. PROTECTING us. You , your children, your parents. You have to understand that the "news" only airs the bad points of this war, but never the good points of the war. For example, our soldiers handing out school supplies to little girls, that previously were not given the same opportunities as boys. The villages that our soldiers are helping rebuild, the economy that has been boosted. If you are going to criticize the war, you must look at all aspects of the war. It is not fair to judge if you only have half of the information, it just shows ingorance. God Bless America, and rot in hell Saddam.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

I suppose we should all be sorry the colonel and his group "failed" in their mission in the mid 90's. The reality seems to be that a solution in Iraq
is a long term project. I suspect at least a good part of the "solution" is to promote some sort of willing co-existence between the various religious sects. I have a son who is on a Green Beret team and was off to Afghanistan two weeks after the 9-11 attacks and has served two tours in Iraq. His team may be scheduled to return in the fall of '07 and I am very ambivalent about the effectiveness of that effort. He has told of times when (on the first tour in early '03) his team would go into a school and observed educational materials for elementary aged children advocating the extermination of Jews and Americans. Undoing that sort of indoctrination is a generation away. One of the current difficulities is that where the extremists are concerned, at the end of the day "they" wish you dead simply because you belong to the "wrong" sect. I have to believe this is such a perversion of Islamic faith but that is the current reality. We should also keep in mind (and counters an earlier message) that people are NOT worse off today than under Saddam. In a majority of the country children are in schools where they were not before; roads, bridges and hospitals are functioning which were not before and people are not living under the constant threat of being murdered as they were before. Those positives are a by-product of the work of our military forces and that does not get the play in the mainstream media it should. I apologize for rambling but I have a personal stake in this matter. The republicans have done a poor job of articulating the objective and if the leadership has the courage to admit whether "the objective" can be accomplished or not, I hope they have the courage to save our men and women in the military from symbolic sacrifices.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

Death at the hands of anyone, except in self-defense, is wrong by any stretch of the imagination. An eye for an eye has never and will never solve anything. We have no business there and the soldiers know it. They don't even want to be there. Crimes occur due to greed, arrogance or some other ridiculous reason. The (supposedly) richest and smartest nation on earth and we still bask in the love of violence.

Nah, pity the US for its stupidity that will now rain down on the kids sent into Iraq to defend them and rid them of WMD.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

JUDGE NOT THAT YE BE NOT JUDGED

Saddam Hussein served a purpose both for us and his own country. We can clearly observe, since our occupation in 2003, the country has been turned into a Banana Republic, in which chaos is now the daily norm. Yes, he was brutal, but that is what was needed in such a country in which religious zealots are nuttier than the brutal leaders. WE, the US of A, trained him and put him in power, and overzealous nutters within our own government decided to play Rulers and Gods over Iraq. As a Republican, I have been shocked and amazed over our failures to see the massacre that will now ensue in that poor Banana Republic, if Saddam Hussein is executed. God save us all, for after his execution true chaos will reign in that entire region.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

The right to live....the right to free speech....the right to practice whatever religion you wish...the right to do so many things here in our grand country that so many others are not afforded the right to do. A woman in the US...the right to tell her husband "I don't think so"....and if he hits her, the right to press charges and throw his butt in jail. A luxury the woman in Iraq did not have under Saddam's rule. A woman is an equal citizen in the US and not 2nd class like she used to be in Iraq. A man...the right to support his beliefs without fear of having his right hand amputated and tattooed on his head for having an opinion, contaray to a leaders thought. A sentenced many Iraqi man suffered for not having the same beliefs of his leader...a luxury many men exercise on a daily basis. A little girl...dreaming of being a doctor and having a family some day....the dream of every little girl in the US. The dream of finally being able to go to school and getting an education...now a reality for little girls in Iraq. When you think about Saddam being an elected official...Hmmm a Dictator who caused so much pain, agony, tourment, disaray, etc..Do you really think that so many people really wanted to vote for him or was it fear of loss of life that swayed their decision. You will be surprised what people will do to stay alive. Think about what Saddam did before he became dictator...He tortured people, some guilty but the majority of them....innocent people who did not agree with Saddam's Regiem. I am a firm believer that we should not kill people out of malice, however a death sentence, to me, is not malice. (God I love my first amendment right) It is a Government's way of punishing those who commited a crime. For those who quote the beautiful words of the Bible...remember how people were punished back in the time when Jesus walked the earth...stoning. I am not saying that every single crime should be punished by death...on the contaray. However, I do believe that for the crimes that Saddam and his Regiem have inflicted upon the people in the counrty of Iraq deserve nothing less. I realize many lives of our brave men and women have been lost. As a daughter and granddaughter of a Sailor and wife of a Marine, I understand the sacrifice's they are making....not just for their families but for your's and mine as well. They do it without THOUGHT, without COMPLAINT and with every ounce of HONOR, VALOUR, COURAGE, and STRENGTH they possess. I am so proud to say to all those American Soldiers and their families that: I appreciate everything you have done and will continue to do for me and my family. Everyday I say a prayer for their families because with out brave men and women such as them the freedoms, we so cherish everyday, would cease to exist. For instance, the ability for me to sit here and type this opinion statement..under Saddam's rule I probably wouldn't have it posted for 5 minutes before I was tried, convicted and executed.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

Saddam's death is no loss and good riddance. However it should have occurred totally at the hands of his people with NO help from the US. Iraq was not a threat to us. In fact Saddam’s Iraq was a counter balance to Iran and so served our purpose. We armed Saddam for years and treated him as an ally. The Iraqi people know this and know that while he was our friend we were complicit in his crimes and looked the other way while he killed innocent Iraqis. They have also seen the pictures of American officials including Rumsfeld shaking his hand and being his buddy. Makes me wanna puke. No, this is no revolutionary victory of an oppressed people. This is a puppet government of an occupying power carrying out a mutually gratifying task. If the Iraqis had been allowed to hit bottom and have a real revolution of their own then there would be some legitimacy. That legitimacy may not emerge until after they have their civil war. Unless we intend to do that for them as well.
Meanwhile Bin Laden, the real enemy, sits safe in Pakistan (our great ally in the War on Terror, Ha!) and prepares to celebrate the death of his enemy Saddam. Saddam's regime, in fact, was precisely the kind of secular Arab government bin Laden abhorred. Oh well, ya kill one, ya give aid and comfort to the other.
So it goes.

BRING THEM HOME!

It is a good thing all of us live in the United States or a free country that believes in the right to live life peacefully with limited Harrassment. Saddams rule forced his countrymen to believe that women are not to go out in public or better yet no rights to vote as men do, just to name a few. Saddams rule incarcerated individuals to force involvement in Iraqs armed services which was evident when large military units surrendered wihtout weapons being fired. The United States of America had its own revolution and civil war for some of the same reasons We are liberating the Iragi people. Thank God Some strong leaders of other countries and their soldiers came to our forefathers aid. Where would the world be ? And it is time the Iraqi people stand on their own feet and defend for themselves the rights that they desire in their own hearts. From what I saw, saddam got the fairest trial possible, considering all the circumstances. Our

After all a criminal is a criminal. Islam is such a misunderstood religion because of the Saddam and the Osamas of the world. And sure the reality of all this is because of our wonderful government who had these people on their payroll and when they turned against us then it was time to take them out. That is why I hate politics. We all come to this world without any sins and we all have the right to leave without any sins. The people who don't see this will be punished here on earth and the here after.

Islam to some seems curel but it is justice for one's sins. We are not God so yes we are not suppose to judge but we are suppose to punish individuals if they have been found guilty of their sins. It is Islamic law and the Islamic countries have to follow that law. So it is not curel it is the rights given to them. We one is not punished then someone else will become a murderer and a thief if they know they won't be punished for their crimes.

To me Saddam is not a martyr but a murderer of people and Islam - if he was a true Muslim and if he had only practiced to be a true Muslim he wouldn't be getting his earthly punishment right now.

As for the outcome of what happens after his death in Iraq - I pray to Allash for peace for every humanity and religions in this world. We are here for only a short time and shouldn't be made shorter because someone wants to fill their pockets with gold and will do anything to get it but they are only going to leave behind when they die!!!

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

I totally believe that Suddam Hussein is getting what he rightfully deserves. Saddam will burn in hell with the other tyrants that have preceded him, if he is guilty of all that he is accused, i have no personal knowledge of these attrocities but a jury ofhis peers have convicted him so let justice be and may GOD have mercy on his soul and show mercy to us all in this time of suffering and sorrow

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

It seems ironic that a supposedly lawfully elected president who invaded a foreign country, held people without benefit of legal counsel or trial, operated above the law without regard for the wishes of his people, and used his nation's army to further his own personal agenda, has now been executed by a supposedly lawfully elected president who invaded a foreign country, held people without benefit of legal counsel or trial, who operated above the law without regard for the wishes of his people, by using his nation's army to further his own personal agenda.

It is their decision to execute Saddam, not ours. We turned him over to their ruling authority, to carry out a sentence their court set.
That being said, I personally believe that until their civil war is settled, (don't be fooled, they are definately having an undeclared civil war), we will accomplish next to nothing in the region. You simply cannot try to deal with three seperate factions, who happen to despise each other, whom are all convinced that they are right and everyone else is wrong, and are willing to kill and die for their beliefs, vieing for the top spot. Until they hash it out amongst themselves, there is absolutely no possible way there can be a peaceful co-existance between the Sunnis, the Shiites, and the Kurds. They have been slaughtering each other since Biblical times, and just because the liberals among us are wringing their hands and saying they should play nice, it ain't gonna happen. And, obviously, you can't force them to play nice by pointing a weapon at them, because they they seem to have the nasty habit of shooting back.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

The religoius sects have fought for years and will continue to fight amonst themselves, though I have supported Bush for his stand against Huessain it might be time to vacate Iraq and leave the fighting to them, only they can retore peace, rebuild the country and lead their people

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

Thank you Gary Dulany, well said.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

Today is a day of justice and injustice. As much as I am happy for the justice, I am saddened by the position that United States has taken in forcing its views and way of life unto cultures existed hundreds of years before United States formed its culture. Victor Gill, a fellow commentator on this page has put it perfectly logical. People of our nation were mislead in the name of so called "democracy for Iraq" by the Bush administration. Who is Bush to want to change the way of life for Iraqis? If Iraqis wanted a change of lifestyle, believe me, they would have found a way. If they really wanted it!!!!! Yesterday, a man and his 3 year old nephew was hit and killed by a truck only because some cars stopped while the light was green to give them a chance to cross the street while the truck just followed the lights signal to go and did not realize they were crossing the street. If Bush thinks he is the great saviour of Iraqis, he needs to think again. He killed more than 3000 sons and daughters of this great nation of ours and he killed many more than that Iraqi civilians. To Bush and his family, close and distant, I hope that you will always remember with shame what you have done to further your own agendas not related to the people of this great nation of ours nor to the people of Iraq. I am appealing to you, PLEASE NEVER EVER ELECT ANOTHER BUSH OR ITS DESCENDANT INTO ANY OFFICE if you care about our GREAT NATION!!!!

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

The US people and US Government did not put Saddam to death. If an American attempted a coup, they would have a fair trial and a host of free lawyers, and would likely get a few years in prison. It is likely that all of the men in the coup attempt who were captured were summarily executed without a trial. Their families almost certainly also recieved some sort of punishment.

It is that same sort of blanket punishment that was the crime that Saddam was tried and executed for. Perhaps with his exit from the world stage of affairs, we can begin to prosecute the rest of the war on the radicals and mass murderers.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

Thou shalt not kill, ...unless you tick off the rule makers and power mongers. I am tired of the LA gangbanging style of war going on over their, let the soilders do their jobs, with full quick force. Then call out the B-52. And let them end the war quickly. And let us as American citizens be apriecative of all are American soilders fighting to keep peace for us, so where ever we are, we can lay our heads down at night in peace.Because we know they have are backs. God bless America, and the American Soilders.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

C. First of all I completely agree that he was a tyrant and needed to be dealt with. The Bush family decided to go after him. NOT the US. NOT the UN. Not the International community!
How stupid was this decision to allow him to be tried by an IRAQI Court? Was he defeated by the Iraqi's? NO! He was defeated by the Bush family! Which by the way if George Bush Sr. had any balls the more than 2,000 American servicemen and women would NEVER have paid with their lives! He had an opportunity to oust Sadam with little to no bloodshed. Just ask Gen. Schwarzcoff (sp)!
It doesn't matter if the people serving on the jury (Judge) are 100% partial. They are an Iraqi court! This will always go down in history as the murder of Sadam by the Bush family! If he had been tried by a TRUE International Court and THEN sentenced to die this would have calmed everything down. Now this just looks like George Bush waved his magic hand and ordered the execution. I honestly believe that many more Americans will lose their lives now because of this stupid decision.
This "war" is looking more and more like Vietnam isn't it!

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

TO THE COL:

A lump of coal to you and those who worked with you in training those who were to coup Saddam's regime. Contrary to what has been said, the vast majority of our troops support our efforts in Iraq and believe to pull out now is not the answer. the loss of human life in this war is indeed a sad thing. Our men and women in uniform have sacrificed much and deserve the gratitude of the citizens of the world, but especially the gratitude and respect of the citizens of this great nation.
History has shown time and time again that there are some things worth fighting and dying for. Our President has been uup front about the reasons for going into Iraq. Weapons of Mass Destruction was only one of them. He was also up front about the long term commitment that was involved in going into Iraq.
For anyone to say that the Iraqis were better off under Saddam than they are now is beyond belief.
Whether you think we should have gone to war with Iraq or not is no longer relevent. We are there. Whether or not you think Saddam should be executed is not relevent. He was tried and convicted by an Iraqi court for crimes committed against the Iraqi people. He will be executed according to Iraqi law. It is none of our business.
That, under the most difficult of circumstances, the Iraqis were able to conduct this trial and now apparently carry out the verdict is a great victory for them as a nation.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

Honestly, these ramblings amuse me to no end! Then, there are those in our country who believe we were wrong to go into Iraq and "remove" Saddam - but those same people seem to believe we should go into those African countries and do what is necessary (i.e., "remove the warlords") to bring to those countries the same opportunities we are now attempting to bring to Iraq. We claim to be a "Christian nation," yet we eagerly clamor for the death of one we once supported when it suited us. The terrible truth is that we are really no different than the Islamic extremists. If we were, we would disengage ourselves from this cycle of death and destruction and truly embrace the message of the one we claim gives us our values. I have been convinced for many years that the Conservative Christian Right is as far away from God and Jesus Christ as anyone on this planet can be. I've always thought that thoe who shout the name of God the loudest, do so because they are the furthest from him. How can we celebrate the life of a gentle President and the hanging of a tyrant at the same time? we can because we do not believe, follow or even attempt to live anything close to the kind of truly loving life that jesus showed us. HOWEVER, after reading the comment from Butch Champan I felt inclined to put in two more cents worth. First of all, our military is VOLUNTARY. No one is forced to enlist. Those who do realize from the start that they will be placed in harm's way, and possibly even killed. Comparing Bush to Hussein is outrageous. You may disagree with the presidents choices but to compare him to a man who was responsible for some of the most brutal and disgusting acts toward human beings since the start of time is truly shocking. The horror stories I've heard and read concerning this monster, hanging him is much too mild of a way to die. You know Mr. Champan, it would be wonderful to live in a world where everyone is good and loving and peaceful. No wars, no fighting, no mass executions. But we don't. We live in a world where people like Hussein torture and murder human beings for the sport of it. Therefore, we need a military willing to give up there lives to rid the world of evil dictators like Suddam Hussein, and also the type of president willing to risk his reputation by sending them there. No military personel is over seas by force. They volunteered their lives to fight for America wherever and whenever they are needed. To suggest Bush go to the gallows for eliminating a evil, demonic dictator from the face of the earth is sickening. However, you should consider your self blessed for living in a country where you can make such statements with no risk of danger to your self or your family.

A personal note on the execution of Saddam Hussein

Thank you Stan Forron, Gainesville FL, David Wolfanger,Richard Nathan in Burbank, CA.
