Elizabeth, as well as the entire Edwards campaign, has won every round against Coulter. Coulter's disgracful actions are no longer accepted by a majority of Americans - so much so that we dig in our pockets to support someone or a group she attacks. Overwhelming support branched out for the gay community after continual attacks from Coulter - and now the same has happened for the Edwards campaign. When will Ann learn?

Watching that clip of Ms Coulter made me think of the famous exchange between Joseph Welch and Senator McCarthy:

"Until this moment, Senator, I think I never gauged your cruelty or recklessness...."

Followed by

"Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator.... You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

It appears that Ms Coulter is a worthy successor to the late senator and his defamatory mode of operation. The difference, 53 years later, is that in 1954 the American people were sickened by this kind of behavior, whereas now it passes for a form of entertainment. It would appear that in providing a forum for unconscionable behavior, Hardball is to political discourse what the WWE is to real sports.

"Coulter, though, is also benefiting from the confrontation. Over the last day, sales of her latest book are way up."

It's pretty clear who's NOT benefiting, and that's the GOP. Go Ann, go! You and Bush together can cripple the Republican party for a couple of elections.

Why is it that when a Conservative Republican makes a comment that makes a liberal mad it is broadcast across the Nation as hate speech but when a liberal makes a comment as in the case of bill maher "wishing Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack", it is dismissed as a joke. If the comment is so bad and in the words of john edwards wife "HATE SPEECH" why is it being used on her husbands website to get money for his campaign.

It is people like Ms. Coulter that drive the citizens of this country out of the election booths. If this is political discourse then why bother, most might say. And it works too. Look and the percentage of voters and buy how much Republican candidates win by. Truth is most only get elected by 30 - 36% of ALL elegible voters. It is a brilliant tactic and it has been working for the GOP and radical right for years. Just keep poisioning the system and drive all but the very die hard voters away and you will have an advantage.

As usual, the Edwards' and some of your readers don't get it.

First, Ms. Coulter is NOT a politician. Her language may not be appropriate for a polical candidate, but the voters would determine that, right?

Second, Ms. Coulter's "hateful" speech could easily be countered with reasoned responses. However, the Edwards' have none and utilize a bait-and-switch tactic to change completely the topic of debate.

Third, I think it's human nature to become more vitriolic in speech when the other party is disengenuous, overly ambitious or just plain stupid. I think Ms. Coulter could be more convincing without her "hurtful" speech, but then we all can't be Ronald Reagan, can we?

Finally, for those who think that parties always have to work together, get real. There comes a time when values and principles cannot be compromised. That's where the intelligent individual actually listens to what is actually being said, filters out the rhetoric, and aligns himself with one or the other.

Ann Coulter appears to be a shallow minded person. She has no intellectual subject to say so she resorts to disgraceful comments to gain attention. For someone who has written numerous book, I was appalled by her inability to defend her comments and the use of her language. I don't know what is convincing about her saying that "we should invade the Muslim world, kill their leaders, and convert them Christianity." Though I agree with most of Couter's ideology, I found her 'brushing off' of Edwards' request to be a bit of a cop-out. Like most bullies, she avoided the request before her, trying to turn the issue around in her favor, while not really approaching the topic at hand. Edwards asked 'stop the personal attacks' and Couter replied with rhetoric about the Edwards' fundraising tactics.

While one could argure that there is some ethical issues with the Edwards' fundraising tactics, it's not that much different from Couter using such publicity to sell books?

Edwards' had the ball in her court at that moment, and could have retorted by calling Couter a hypocrite, and challenged her intentions for the various 'personal attacks'. But in the long run, Edwards' 'kill them with kindness' strategy was successful, as I feel she came out as the better person in this conflict.

To sum up...though I agree with Couter's ideology, I don't agree with her strategy. In contrast, I don't agree with Edwards' ideology, but her strategy was appropriate and well timed - it's the age-old conflict between the big-city activist and the true southern belle. In this case, the south wins.

Ann Coulter doesn't speak for the Repulican Party. She's an author and a pundit. It's political entertainment designed to stir up dialog, make people think and sell books.
Most people miss the irony of all this.
Her post 9/11 comments about the Muslim word are a perfect example of this. That is what they intend to do to the West (and have tried for the past 1200 years, read your history).

I find it funny that she never can remember her own writings, in HER books, when a journalist brings up a passage from a book of hers. She always looks like a deer in the headlights. The double standard used to villify conservatives and thereby promote liberals is so blatant that it is a bit frightening. I want to preface this by saying that although I am a North Carolinian, I am not necessarily camping in John Edward's arena as of yet. However, I do applaud Elizabeth Edwards for standing up to the likes of Ann Coulter. I have NO respect for someone who makes a living using cynicism, criticism, and mud-slinging. She sat in front of the camera on "Hardball" with a big smirk on her face, which indicated to me she got exactly what she wanted. And what's with the hair-swinging? Was she flirting with someone? In my opinion, Coulter needs to find a REAL job instead of making her money at other people's expenses (sound familiar??).

I argue that Ann is actually a liberal. What better way to get support for a group than to stand venomosly against it. They thought they were better and more important than any other person that has lost a loved one wrongly. Zillions of people lose loved ones and are not compensated a dime.
