The promise to do better is good enough for me.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris:
Please keep messing up. Because as more males react with sexism, it'll just galvanize the women vote, which would be fabulous. Not sure what debate you'all were watching; but the one I was watching the big moment was Hillary's considered, and well thought out response to Obomb'em's "Yeah, sure, I'll go after them first and think later." As for Edwards, he's like the younger brother bleating, "me too! me too!"

There is ABSOLUTELY no question, that she's the most qualified for the job, and yes, wife experience counts. But she has a LOT of work experience and has handled herself superbly as a senator. Remember: right now the number is 16 and the magic number is 35 women senators. Don't think for a moment we'll give up this fight. There's waaaay to much machismo in the media and the senate and it absolutely needs more women and we need a women president. And, Hil is ideal.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris, what took you so long to admit your mistake. Up to this period of time, I have enjoyed your show and the up-beat you bring to the game of politics. With your consistent Clinton-bashing show after show, it was most wearisome! I find that my friends and I have great difficulty attempting to watch your show; you've lost a great deal.

At least you've taken ONE STEP at addressing SOME of the unkind and malicious attacks upon Hilliary Clinton - both for being a woman running for public office and being a politician you've decided you do not like!

In my community, you've lost a large and faithful-fan base! GOOD LUCK with the work to regain it!

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris Matthews seemed sincere in his appology. The problem is that he has shown a lack of respect to women at many other times. He is tough but he has to be to get answers and to make people think. We have too many people with the mindset that that they will vote for the candidate who "looks presidential", "is a woman", "is African American", "is a Christian" etc, instead of their solutions to problems and what in their background makes them a leader. I am tired of hearing about 35 Years of experience but no details, of tremendous amounts of money spent on advertising, while others can get their message across with little money, and of questions not being answered by the candidates. I am a 72 year female who has voted for 50 years, crossing party lines several times. This year I have not yet found the almost perfect candidate and I count on people like Chris and Tim to help me.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Cynthia from Deptford NJ,
No it was not Clinton pressure. Matthews has consistently said derogatory and sixist things regarding Hillary Clinton, all while attempting to build up his personal "favorites" Barack Obama and Rudy Giuliani...it's disgracefull. Chris Matthews isn't fooling anyone. Matthews has long been a political hack. Matthews cowardly bias and attacks on Hillary, backfired in NH, and he and MSNBC were left looking the fool...hardly a new experience for Mr. Matthews. In analyzing politics, the whys and hows of things may not be all that pretty. It's hard denying that Hillary may have used the '98 situation as a set-up for post-White House life. And so what? She made a bad situation into a positive start for herself. I say Chris Matthews was not out of line in his remarks. But it is another to be covering the news - the day before the vote in New hampshire - the day after the vote, etc. - and to inject such biases, and frankly what seemed like hatred of women. I can't imagine you want it to sound this way, but it seems so clear that you don't like Hillary, and not because of her views or ideologies - but because she is a woman trying to be in the game that it is ok for men to be in. Your comments rallied women voters in New Hampshire. They rallied me. If anyone actually thinks back to the days when Clinton lied about the definition of "is" ( and before everyone gets on my bandwagon I will tell you that I voted for President Clinton TWICE!), the country rallied around Hillary and admired her for sticking with her marraige ( which I can't say I would have done). She became a much more public figure than the First Lady in the background. The whole cheating/lying episode did thrust her into the public eye, more than before. Everyone watched as she, Chelsea, and Bill walked to/from the helicopter, across the lawn, she on the one side and he on the other, with Chelsea in the middle. We felt her pain and anger at what he had done. When she got up and pulled herself up by her bootstraps in NY, people rallied to support her again. Yes, she has proven a worthy Senator for New York, but Chris, you were right on in your observations of what had taken place then and how those events catapulted her to the spotlight of political office. Chris, you have a historial perspective and insight not seen in many political analyists. You ask probing questions ( your focus on the flop of yellow cake and subsequent lying by Scooter Libby was right on) and I would urge you not to change your approach. You manage to stimulate diaglogue which is imperitive in our country today so that our citizens make better choices for the future of our country.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris,
I've been a faithful viewer since 206 of my friends and co-workers died in the World Trade Center on 9/11. The only real mistake you made, in my opinion, was to put too much emphasis on the theatrical side of politcs and forgot that actual policies are more influential to voters. I do however wish you had called Tom Delay out when he made the comment on Hardball about "know it all women" - his comment was real misogyny and fully deserved scrutiny. In general, my only complaint about your political coverage is that it does tend to give more weight to style - you should help to illuminate us as to policies because you really have a terrific ability to make it understandable and interesting - and poll after poll shows that we want policy coverage, not theater reviews. Horse race coverage may jazz you up but its all worthless empty calories and you can do and have done so much better. That said, you are all heart and have the best laugh on t.v. and I laughed so hard I cried when you described the tribal nature of the Republican candidates on Leno!

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

I used to watch your show regularily. You were professional and neutral with straight talk and challenging all comers. Your comments regarding Senator Clinton demonstrate your current inability to maintain an objective perspective on politicians and this race. It was demeaning and a common form of sexism. Your coworkers are crying fowl for your being criticized. Hardball should really apply to you as well. It would though be better for you to restore your previous level of professionalism

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris, your program is a model for what we so desperately need in the United States--an uncensored
market place of ideas. Clinton's campaign? If they cannot take this sort of criticism in the campaign, what happens if they get to the White House?
Not to take anything away from you Chris. Evidently you are more powerful than anyone on the planet! I'm glad to see this now than a year from now, if she were to win.
Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris, I saw your show on Jan.17, in which you had on Allen Raymond, author of "How to Rig an Election: Confessions of a Republican Operative". In his opening statement, he admitted to entering into a criminal conspiracy with an as yet unnamed "agent of the RNC". This seems like a big story to me. Yet. You apologized for one comment. But you have also said Clinton resembled Nurse Ratched. You have alluded to her as a she devil. You have suggested that if a candidate surrounds herself with women, that candidate undermines his or her case to be commander in chief. You have likened Clinton to a strip teaser. You have doubted aloud whether she a "convincing Mom." You called her "a sort of a Madame Defarge of the left." And when you met her in person, you pinched her cheek. You may not have even realized it, but this is the language and the behavior of someone who is interested in belittling and debasing others based on their sex. Period. Make your argument based on facts and issues, if you can. For all the candidates, of both parties. THEN I'll believe you have the goodwill you SAY you have.

Clinton is about my eighth choice for President. I'm no fan of hers. I am not a feminist nor am I a member of a left wing organization (don't even go to their web sites). I am a common ordinary midwest woman voter whose favorite cable network is MSNBC. I watch you, I watch Joe and I watch Keith. However, I have noticed how much Hillary bashing goes on on your show. Even though I don't plan to vote for Hillary, I don't like the Hillary bashing. It gets old and everything you say is negative about her. Women notice this.

As I was driving to work this morning, I thought to myself that if I were to vote for Hillary, I would not be voting for her out of "sympathy" as you state the women of New Hampshire did, but I would be voting for her because I think she is "courageous and has guts" (just as you have described McCain). I think Hillary has those same attributes for what she went through. Only you describe it as a "sympathy" issue and I describe it as a "courage" issue. And if I were to vote for her...it would be that I respect her for her "courage"...not because I feel sorry for her.

The first thing that stood out to me when I saw your apology was that McCain was described by you as courageous....Chris...I don't see Hillary as a victim as you do...I see her as a courageous woman who overcame a lot of adversity....just as John McCain has overcome adversity. Men aren't the only ones who are courageous.

I think you should have apologized...many of us are offended by some of the things you say. And this was an appropriate time to try and get an apology out there. An "I'm sorry" would have been nice, but at least you have made this effort. I respect you for that. I'm hoping Hardball will be a lot more pleasant to watch because of what has happened. You said "I get it," in your apology. If you mean that, that can only make Hardball better.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris,

Why did you have to apologize to Hillary? It's rarely manipulative and it isn't a sign of weakness. It's just biology. Joe Scarborough's mom seemed like the only one around who understood what happened in New Hampshire. I think that it was not sympathy for her tears, but our anger at the press reaction that got all those women- uncomitted and/or not likely voters on Saturday- out to the polls for Mrs. Clinton on Tuesday. I hope you give your pre-New Hampshire shows another look. I'm a Barak supporter, but even I was rooting for her after your shows. But not any more. Somehow I feel that you want to be a King maker. And that colors your comments to a great extent. Honestly, I am not suprised that you said what you said about Hillary, coming from you doesn't surprise me. I am not a Hillary fan, but she has gained my respect over the past few months. I was rooting for Edwards in the beginning and still hope that he will do better. As to Obama, I have always wanted to root for him. But he hasn't given me enough to root for. After the past 7 years, I so much want a competent president, I don't have to like him or her. I still remember how you praised President Bush to the skies because he looked so good in that uniform while pronouncing "missing accomplished." He did look good, I will give you that, but I have always thought it takes more than that to be a predisent.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Your comments about Hillary made me very angry. Rabid feminists took your comments out of context, bitched about it on that vapid show "The View" and made you into the poster boy for misogyny, when clearly you are a good guy who made an honest an accurate political commentary of Hillary Clinton's rise to power. I am a Democrat and a strong believer in equal rights for all, but everything you've said about Hillary Clinton has been accurate and concise, based upon the facts, her statements and mistatements, and the political reality in which we all find ourselves.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

If you read these comments, please disregard the morons that put you down. He was once again way out of line. Always lets his mouth run away with him. I have always been amazed that MSNBC let him get by with the derogatory comments he has makes and his outright dislike of someone being televised. Not only was it insulting to the person, his comments are very disrepectful and he should be above that type of behavior considering his position at MSNBC. Sometimes it is best to keep our mouth shut and our own personal feelings to ourselves. This election is not about the candidate Chris Matthews endorses, although everyone can guess which person from both parties he excites him. Maybe Chris Matthews needs to seek another profession....doesn't MSNBC remove people from the air who make derogatory remarks about individuals? Seems like I remember not so long ago....may be that is exactly what should happen in this instance.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Your apology and clarification is no less insincere than most of your work. It's why I gave up watching these "news" talk shows a long time ago.

Your work serves the beltway, not the people, and is a tragic example of the depths our media has fallen.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Michael D. Your point, as qualified above, was a fair observation, pooly phrased. All consumers of shows such as yours must view these shows with some sensitivity to the role of a person who puts himself/herself out in the position you do, daily, talking about such highly charged issues, with no scirpt, just a heart to guide them through these minefields. Who among us has not made an insensitive comment, or formed a wrong opinion on the spot, when discussing such topics. The difference is the vast majority of us do it in a far less public forum, and the repurcussions are far less. I salute you and all others who are willing to actually say something of value in the wasteland that is TV in year 2008. It is not easy in the post Imus world, where one misstep can lead to a career threatening crisis.

Keep up the good work.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris, I have watched you for a long time and have been turning off your program more and more. The comparison between your viciousness against Hilary Clinton and you and G G Liddy praising the way the Bush crotch was framed during his carrier landing was the most telling comment on your attitudes toward women I have ever seen.
Perhaps your apology was sincere--I don't know. I suspect if it was, you will repeat the offense within the next couple of weeks.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

I am a very strong and vocal proponent of you and your program, actually switched from CNN mostly because of you, and now Morning Joe, BUT your obvious dislike of the Clinton's and your obvious delight in Obama can be unsettling. I am a political junkioe and luv watching the back and forth, glad u felt the desire to look at your "old" At this time, I do not intend to vote for Hilary Clinton, but the fact is that I have spent many days after watching Hardball asking myself if you and others understand that the recurring sexism actually pushes me to support her out of my own anger and frustration at your words.
I am a woman voter and I do not care about whether Mrs. Clinton's pearls are satisfactory; I do not care about claims that she has shown cleavage inappropriately on the Senate floor; I do not care whether her calves are too large in the judgment of Ann Coulter. And I do not care what part you think her role as the 'wronged wife' played in her Senate victory in New York.
Not only is it speculative and dismissive, it is irrelevant to the issues at hand.
The problem is that you have become, from where I am sitting, a repeat offender. Whenever an attractive woman (in your view) appears on your show, you make remarks about her appearance. All I learn from these remarks is how to discern which women you find attractive and which you do not.
These are serious times and there are too few places on mainstream media where concerned citizens can turn for serious analysis of the issues of the day. I used to think your show was such a place, but because of your barely concealed enmity towards Mrs. Clinton, expressed in terms of abject sexism, I had decided not to watch your show anymore.
Given your apology, I'll give it another try.
But please understand that your words did not 'seem' dismissive to some women; your words were dismissive.
Your listening public deserves better from you.
A practical suggestion might help: stop calling Senator Clinton 'Hilary'. It's a common happenstance across the media spectrum. Linguists and parents understand the importance of words. If you do not refer to all the presidential candidates by their first names (and you do not), then do not refer to Senator Clinton that way. Given your obvious dislike of the Senator, it only adds further insult to an already-dismissive posture.
Just a suggestion from a woman who is not particularly overly-sensitive, but who is old enough to remember how far we claim to have come in putting aside sexist attitudes in our country.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Dear Chris,

My husband and I watch you every night and rely on your good heart and fine mind. So to me, this mea culpa reads as a hollow attempt to save your own poll numbers. You did not just alienate women with your remarks, my own 82 year old father (whose is not exactly the most enlightened person in the world when it comes to sexism) was appalled by the way you've discussed her over the last month and a half. As for myself, I was not vocal about supporting Clinton until I saw your repeated sexist attacks on Hardball. Now I feel it is imperative to remind my friends and associates to focus on the issues, including the fact that it is still seemingly permissable to attack people on the basis of gender. By the way, we who respond this way are not being "sensitive" as you say, you are being a chauvinist. I have a real sense that he realizes what a charmed position he has and that he's lucky he gets to take part in it. I find him like a political fanboy that has a seat at the table and is unapologetically happy to be there! I see nothing wrong with him complimenting his female guests on how they look. Its humanizing, NOT dehumanizing. His recent interview with Elizabeth Edwards was stellar! He asked the tough questions of her and her husband's candidacy and didn't back down, and at the end of the interview he gave her a genuine warm smile, which was returned by Elizabeth, and he complimented her on her amazing smile and how GREAT of a woman she was. She was gracious and he was gracious. Similarly, he gave Hillary Clinton a hug after grilling her at a news conference. Would he give a male politician a hug? Probably not. Is he a misogynist who treats women as second class citizens? Get real! He always treats his female guests and fellow commentators (like AB Stoddard, Nora O'Donnell, etc.) with respect and professionalism, but at the end of the day, they're all human beings! Why not a wink and nudge and a "ha ha"? His show isn't a "news cast" anyway. Tongue-in-cheek is part of the Matthews appeal and is widely known. Besides, the women he has on his show are all strong confident women. They can handle themselves. Find a new bandwagon to ride, people.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris:
I have been stunned by the bias you show against Hillary Clinton. Whether you like her personally or not, as a journalist you have an obligation not to try and tip public opinion against a candidate you obviously do not like. My husband is apolitical but has commented several times while I have been watching your show "He really doesn't like the Clinton's does he?".

I think Hardball is a great show, but am getting increasingly turned off by the lack of balanced reporting.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

It's pretty remarkable when Pat Buchanon has a more objective view of Hillary Clinton than Hardball's host. I watched all night during the New Hampshire primary coverage, and the vitriol he was spewing about Hillary Clinton turned by stomach. He is right to apologize, and I think that anyone who watches the show all the time like I do could not fail to notice his discrimination toward Senator Clinton. I am not saying he feels that way because she is a woman, but I have never seen such distorted coverage. It has eased up considerably, and I feel much better about watching the show. Readers, make no mistake...Matthews was heavily biased against the junior senator from New York. The difference is a person (like Hillary) who has spent the years she has in and around Washington but has little show for it; particularly things with a national impact. A good politician is one who puts the interest of the nation first. Hillary does not fit into the last category. She claims to have "many good ideas and opportunities for America" but with her 15 years in Washington, as the first lady and as senator, she has not brought these out. She has been a part of the mess in Washington that has all but ruined our economy and quality of life.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

I find it interesting how Hillary keeps taking cheap shots at Obama's character. If he wanted to play dirty politics he could bring up the fact that Hillary sat on Tara Bank's show and told the nation's young women that there was never a doubt in her mind Bill loved her even though he cheated on her over and over again. What is that telling them?

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris, don't disappoint those of us that dislike dirty politics. Keep fighting for us and don't cave in to the Clinton's. We're having to experience the ugliness of what they are capable of every time they're behind in the polls. And, make no mistake, it is the "Clinton's" who are clawing their way to the nomination anyway they can. In New Hampshire it was the emotional breakdown and, now, in Wisconsin it's accusing Obama of stealing everyone elses words. Which is ironic when you go back and track their campaign since the beginning. They have changed slogans and used any verbage that was working for other candidates in that moment.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris:

I'm a huge fan! For better or worse, and when I don't always agree with you, I'm still a fan.

I really wanted to commend you for your questioning this evening in the primary coverage for Wisconsin. You interviewed a Rep. from Ohio who is for Clinton and a Dem. from TX. that is for Obama. The Rep. from Ohio was spot on in her endorsement of Clinton and spoke well to all the specifics of the Clinton platform. The Dem. from Tx. was dreadful in backing Obama. Thanks so much for staying with it and insisting that this guy tell us what legislative successes Obama has accomplished - he couldn't recall any. You Rock! Keep playin' Hardball!!!
Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Wow, Chris, what a great question tonight to the Obama supporter about what legislative success he has had! The response was great: silence. My criticism is that you missed a great opportunity to ask the very same question of the Clinton supporter. The response would have been the same. I've been waiting for a year for that question to be put to the Clinton camp, but you media people never ask it. I'm really tired of hearing about Clinton's "experience". Just EXACTLY what has she done to effect change on any issue she so regularly talks about? Some of us really want to know. How about some fairness here?

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris you are my favorite anaylist. Here's my question. You say that we should look at Obama's senate record to predict future success as a leader. Should we also consider the way both Clinton and Obama have managed the primary process? She never admits defeat and she attacks when she is down. Financially she started out with a huge lead and had to dip into her own funds to continue. Does that sound presidential? Let's look at what Hillary has failed to do in the past...healthcare ring any bells?

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

With Obama's success, some of the umph has gone out of my desire to vote. I am a Hillary supporter. I believe she would do the best job as President, because she has something to prove; don't all women? Obama on the other hand is a usurper, and I don't respect him at all. I will probably go for McCain. I believe the people will not be happy after all the brouhaha passes over. As for your comment about Hillary, I have decided that you are biased and sexist and I do not watch your show anymore.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Chris, your treatment of a State Senator from Texas on an interview last night showed your bias for the Clintons. You let the Congress Woman from Ohio respond with a general answer on Hillary and beat the heck out of the State Senator from Texas when he was supporting Obama with a genral answer. You need to be more impartial.

Matthews: Clinton proves herself a 'great politician'

Why do men hate a confident and strong woman? Why are other women threatened by Hillary's achievments?

Men have ruled for 232 years and look where we are, in the abyss of destruction. I like Senator Obama and think he would make a great President, but not while we are still in a "State of Emergency." This is not the time for "on the job training." Obama is just another man trying to rule America.

Clinton DOES have the necessary experience and might to reverse 8 years of "Dark Ages" rule by Bush and stand up to rogue govt's on day 1. As a participant in former Pres.
