Whatever else you may think, it wasn't the Press that found Libby guilty on 4 out of 5 counts. Please remember that it was the Republican Party that insisted during the Clinton Years that Clinton's lying about Lewinsky was an imperachable offense.

If lying about sex is an impeachable act, how does lying about the outing of a covert, undercover CIA agent rank? As Fitzgerald said today, Plame's classified status was an unimpeachable fact.

Your response ignores the facts of the case. Lying to FBI agents is a crime. Lying to a Grand Jury is a crime. Shouldn;t you be thrilled that the Justice system has adequately recognized those facts?

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

How predictable - the press having a collective "orgasm" over this stupid story involving a republican. No way the American public would have supported the pre-emptive Iraqi invasion without being told Saddam had Weapons of Mass Destruction and/or strong ties to Bin Ladin. As Deep Throat said: You have to follow the money... US taxpayer's dollars used to tear up Afghanistan and Iraq, US taxpayer's dollars used to rebuild Iraq, meanwhile good business for Halliburton, EXXON, etc. We go from record surplus to record deficits. Meanwhile tax cuts on dividends. Meanwhile $2 and $3 a gallon gasoline (a very flat tax). The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Up to a hundred thousand seriously wounded whose lives will never be the same and a staggering increase in the divorce rate among military personnel. It is not just the soldiers who pay the price. Spouses and parents now have to deal with the loss of the person they knew both physically and mentally prior to this war. Their children are also victims, developing fears and paranoid behavior from the stress of long abcenses and fear of loss of a beloved parent. They are the victims in the skyrocketing divorce rate among our military families. If the information we gleaned from the Libby trial is correct then it appears that this snowball started in the Vice President's office. When will there be an investigation and when will this snoball be stopped?

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

Donald F. Don't even mention the name of TRUE patriots like George Washington. If we had not taken the war to the terrorists we would still be having 9/11's. It's a frightening thing to think about how most of America clamored for war after 9/11, and now that the going gets tough they tuck their tails and run. Perhaps they provoked us into this war because they new we wouldn't have the courage and conviction to see it through, and we would defeat ourselves. Quit whining and go and stick you head back in the sand. Soon a terrorist will end it all for you! He may have said “ASK HIM!” to you, but he told everyone else that President and the VP were never briefed on the CIA’s independent investigation of the British Intelligence.

“Tenet also said top administration officials -- including Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney -- were never briefed on the CIA's skepticism about the uranium purchase allegations. Nor did he tell members of Congress during briefings on Iraq last fall.”

Did you "ASK HIM" why he didn't brief congress on this issue?

The Berger case has NOTHING to do with the Libby case. The Bush administration opted to let Berger plead and walk. Put the blame where it belongs.

As for why Wilson was sent, in response to Cheney's office once again leaning on the CIA to find him some evidence he could use to sell the war, well Wilson is a former ambassador with extensive contacts in Africa, including Niger, and a knowledge of the uranium mining and trading processes. He was sent because he was frikkin' qualified...unlike so many political hacks this administration has appointed and protected.

And the larger question still remains: if Cheney did lean on the CIA to look into the matter of whether Hussein was trying to get uranium from Niger, why didn't he or one of his minions follow up and find out what the answer was? Well, maybe because he already knew it was a bogus allegation based on clearly forged documents that were delibered to Stephen Hadley, another of his minions, instead of being delivered to the intelligence community for evaluation.

Wilson NEVER alleged that Cheney or his office sent him to Niger. That's a red herring created by Cheney and Libby to justify outing Plame.

It's amazing how many continue to worship Bush and Cheney, no matter how much harm they keep doing to this country and others, no matter how many times they lie about life and death matters. So I guess it's not surprising that Libby will still have his defenders making excuses for him. I do feel sorry for him; he's just another flunky who was sacrificed to protect the White House, without a moment's hesitation or twinge of conscience. He's not the first and he won't be the last 'cause they still got two more years to lie us into a war with Iran, continue screwing up in Iraq and Afghanistan, let the Gulf State cities rot (as long as they're not governed by Republications, that is) and throw more minions under the train to take the blame. Then pardons all around.

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

Just another confirmation of the supreme embarrassment running this country. What did he do? He goes to Niger for a few days, chats up a few old friends from his days in the diplomatic corps, and comes back with a report that Niger was not selling yellow cake to Sadam. Maybe, but how could he know? UN inspectors never discovered the extent of Sadam's nuclear program running up to the first Gulf war, and Iraq is one third the land mass of Niger. Wilson is a joke, and Libby and Cheney were foolish for caring what he said.

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

Reading some of the posts above I can see that a few of us are still scared. We have lost all our friends in the world , even the Brits wised up and are pulling out of Iraq. Impeachemt is too good for these guys, they are just as bad, if not worse than Sadaam himself, at least he didn't pretend to be anything but what he was. BUT to equate Clinton's sex scandal perjury and the Libby perjury during the investigation of the CIA leak is beyond my comrehension.

Clinton's lie did not involve national security; Libby's did. Not only does it appear he put a CIA agent at risk but his motives were to hamper a national security investigation and protect the Vice President and President. His perjury reminded us all that our system of governament and our freedom depends upon the trust we have in the people who are privileged to do business on our behalf. He didn't place service to the Government's clients (citizens/profit) higher than service to an administration (employees/overhead). But, why am I not surprized... this administration has no regard for truth or justice.

Even Libby's own defense (Libby, who by the way wrote a erotic novel about child prostitution in 1903 Japan -there's your family values administration-) said that Libby took the fall for Carl Rove. I am so proud that my country has honest, dedicated lawyers like him, who truly believe in the ideals enshrined in our constitution. This trial is the closest that we will get towards indicting the miserable purveyors of this foolish war, the cost for which far exceeds the thousands of injured and dead servicemen in the long-term global instability it has wrought and the consequences to the safety of our citizens. Not to forget the horrendous death and destruction it brought to the people of Iraq. The actions of Cheney and his lick-spittle subordinate, and Armitage and Rove and the White House media elite WAS treasonous. By exposing Ms. Plame, they endangered all of her foreign contacts during her service, and all those who dealt with her cover company. A firing squad would be too good for these swaggering, incompetent, gossiping imbeciles! Starting with Cheney and going down to Armitage, Libby, Rove, Fleischer and Novak, they need to be metaphorically hung, drawn and quartered for their treasonous acts to the Republic!

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

Bill and Hillary have lied under oath... so whats the big deal???? Scooter's threat of "flipping" on his old boss will be greatly diminished, as going after a sick old man who is no longer in office will just seem like a waste of government resources and abuse of prosecutorial powers. And it just so happens that the timing of a VP resignation also bodes well for the GOP retaining executive power - why not have Bush hand-pick Brownback, Romney or even his brother and get a leg up on the next presidential election? When are you people going to grow up and understand the inherent nature of a process that tries to take care of, and please, a large number of people (what we call America's political process). It is dirty, back-stabbing, cheating, lying, cover-ups and scapegoating. It has been this way since the dawn of man and will continue to be this way no matter if under a republican administration or a democratic administratrion. And whose fault is it. Not the persons you elect to these offices, but YOU. What do you expect from people in which you place so much power. Power corrupts. You people don't want honesty. An honest person would never make it to such levels of power. They would have to tell you things that some of you don't want to hear and you would then throw them out on their ear. And then they would have to do some things you others don't want them to do, and you would throw them out on their ear. You all have your own pent up interests and expectations that are different from the interests and expectations of others, but yet you want those in power to toe the line to only your interests and expectations. How can a person or a group of persons serve and satsify all of you. It is impossible. Personally, I think anyone wishing to take on a high office is nuts. And if they were not worn out, gray, wrinkled and crazy before taking office they sure are after having served. I mean my God, they had to try and take care of and please all of you children, and worry which of you wanted jelly with their peanut butter and which of you did not. Justice may have been served and it may not have been served in the Libby case. But which of you really has the right and the all-knowing power to make that determination? Frankly, I feel sorry for Libby. It is you people that placed him and this administration, and the prior administration, and administrations before that, in no-win positions. Hell, some of you probably won't like how the next administration ties its shoes. And to try and please all of you they will lie and cheat and try different shoe tying methods. Lets just hope they get their shoe tying methods down so they are tying their shoes according to your expectations when in front of you. And as for those leaving elected office. They need not worry about their legacy. For our young people, many of whom today can't even name the first President, won't be able to recall who was in office when.

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

Just watching Libby, with that stupid smirk on his face, walking into the courthouse, made my blood boil. Has nobody else imagined some country, or group of countries, justifying attacking or invading the US because our leaders are lying, despotic, and thieving (just as we portrayed Saddam Hussein)? I have, and I think it would be pretty easy to convince a populace that our leadership is a threat to world security. Most of the world already believes that about us, given our behavior in the world lately. This government needs to be taken back, BY the PEOPLE, FOR the PEOPLE (rather than by the fatcats and the corporations).

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

This proves that this administration is corrupt to its core. However, we all need to ask the follow-up question –WHY? Why would the vice president’s chief-of-staff lie? Why would the administration move swiftly to discredit a former ambassador? Why would they – the most patriotic men in the world – out a CIA operative? Why –because the entire run up to our war in Iraq was based on false, misleading information drafted by this administration. Let us not forget that from the days of the last Bush Admin – there were two no-fly zones in Iraq; one in the north, the other in the south. Under Clinton, our pilots were regularly bombing military installations –on several occasions we fired off cruise missiles. Iraq is a distraction – Osama is still hiding out in the mountain range bordering Pakistan. This administration has wasted time, money and our loyal soldiers on a gambit to secure more oil, instead of attacking the real enemy. been a "non-issue." There were a lot more persons

the NY Times ran a series of photos with names & unit

Some of the papers don't know how or don't care about
"opsec" because they wouldn't have a story. NY Times

Since when has "politics and power" produced honesty? All are traitors, liars, thugs, corrupt. You name it and as for "Prosecutors" they lie more than any group of people walking the streets of the U.S.A.

It is their greed and power that corrupts. Once the prosecutor feed lies to a jury you can only expect to gain guilty verdicts.

I hope you get the chance to ask Fitzgerald if there was no underlying crime (akin to treason) or if he just can't figure out who to charge. I have heard no good discussion as to if there was a crime. It seems clear that if Mrs. Wilson had a clandestine operation that was compromised for political gain then some ones head should roll.
I have heard both Mary Matlin and Orin Hatch both claim on Imus there was no underlying crime - several times. (interesting contrast to Hatches discourse in the importance of perjury when the underlying crime was comparitively trivial in the Clinton impeachment.

We've seen how little regard the Bush administration and their echo chamber have for the truth. They just make up lies whole cloth. Well, think back. They practiced those techniques for 8 years on the Clintons and we "leftists" just let them get away with it.

If we have learned anything from the Libby trial, it is that truth and honor mean nothing to these people. We can't change our letting them get away with the boatload of lies and filth they spewed when Clinton was in office or the first few years of Bush's reign, but let us hold them accountable when they lie about this group of presidential candidates. Our government seems to only run well with good misinformation that is turned into fact. The fact that Saddam wasn't buying uranium from Niger was available to the White House a year before Lil' President Bush made his state of the union address to strike fear into a nation driven by the media is just ludicrous, I'm sure the White House was aware of everything that was going on and didn't have enough information to present to the people of the United States to make them want to support a full invasion of Iraq but with the use of this misinformation and telling the public that Saddam had and could use weapons grade uranium against us in a strike, drove the public into a anti-Iraqi frenzy and after the bombs are dropped and thousand upon thousand troops were deployed does the truth come out and I use the word truth loosely only because it is the truth that the government wants us to believe. The two truths of the United States the one that is fact and the one the general public gets. You asked who is outraged by all that has taken place with Libby, Cheney and Bush? I AM! I've watched with amazement at what this Administration has been able to get away with. It's deplorable and I'm angry. Bush and his administration has played fast and loose with the constitution. I do think Libby is guilty, but I also think he is the fall guy for Rove, Cheney & Bush. Cheney claims Libby is a close friend? Then why doesn't Cheney step up and tell the whole truth? If Cheney is a friend, then I'm Queen Elizabeth. It's time this whole administration is called to accountability! Unfortunately the average Joe Shmoe would be rotting in jail if he or she perjured themself to a Federal grand jury, but Libby was just doing dirty work for his bosses, and they will feel compelled to see that he gets off! You have a few like Martha Stuart and the Enron execs, and some others who don't buy there way out, but the odds are definately in there favor. A poor American might as well just plead guilty and hurry and serve there time to get it over with, because there will be no pardons comming there way! Vietnam war was started on a false pretense, the results were 3.5 million deaths, including 58,000 Americans, several millions maimed, hundreds of thousands continue to die even 32 years after the war was over, and several American billionaires. Yes, war is "the" business for folks like Cheney and others. Vietnam war only stopped when China became a more lucrative money making opportunity than fighting the war in Vietnam. One just have to wonder how many more billions have these billionaires gained from this war? The idea of putting the military under the command of civilians is a great one, AS LONG AS THEY ARE NOT THOSE WHO DIRECTLY, AND INDIRECTLY BENEFIT FROM IT. These war profiteers work or have their agents work in Washington, Pentagon. The power of war should not rest on the politicians, not the president, certainly NOT the vice, not Congress. The power should be given to the American people, who have to eventually bear the consequences and losses. The American voters must fight for a chance to vote to authorize war. From here on out, the American people must not allow people like Chenney (and may be Bush) to take the high office. Those who have benefit from wars ought not to be trusted w/ power to star/run wars.

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

This administration is bankrupting this country, destroying our international credibility, and killing thousands, all in order to line the pockets of their buddies.

Who can you trust when everyone lies?

That is really the question that America faces. Joseph Wilson claims that Bush lied, but his own account in the joint probe on WMD contradicts that assertion. Nigeria affirmed to Wilson that Iraq sought to purchase uranium. Democrats claim that Bush lied, but their own words echo what Bush said all along. The quote above is not from George W. Bush. Rather, it is Senator Jay Rockefeller, the Democratic Vice Chairman of the Intelligence Committee. And he was not alone in his assessment of Iraq before the war. Both Al Gore and Hillary Clinton spoke in similar fashion.

The media has, for the most part, upheld the Wilson/Democrat assertion that Bush lied. How can educated people (as I firmly believe most members of the media to be) view the aforementioned actions and decide that only Bush has lied? It just seems as if to catch a red liar, the blues have decided to lie as well. And when you lie to prove that someone else is a liar, all moral ground is lost.

What happened to the mission to "report" and to "search for the truth"? We all expected the politicians to lie to further their agenda. The greatest travesty of this ordeal was to learn that we now should expect this type of behavior from the media, as well.

Scooter Libby lied under oath and got caught. It’s as simple as that. Perhaps the Bush administration has become so practiced at spinning the truth that it has became second nature to them. Patrick Fitzgerald proved once again that no matter how high up in the government you soar that perseverance, a sharp mind and the laws of this nation can reach out and bring down to earth someone who attempts to hide the truth.

In his own unique way Chris Matthews has the soul of a prosecutor, always trying to uncover the truth from those who try to conceal and spin.

I was flabbergasted when Bush won in 2000. All, or most of the exit polls had Kerry ahead by a good margin. Think there was any fraud involved there? Only takes a Computer wizard to install a chip in each computerized voting machine. Mr Wilson' investigation should have been accepted and our main objective shoul've been to find Bin Laden and deal with him first. Instead Bush had the gall to go after Hussein because he "tried to kill my Dad". Bush did what he wanted to do. Not what the evidence proved to be the right path. As a Viet Nam Veteran and a proud American I am ashamed to admit that our Government has sunk so low. The International community sees just what is going on here and they don't like it either.

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

What can you say of an administration that uses the tragedy of nearly 3000 american souls only for it's own political gain? Libby will sit around for 20 months, get pardoned and then become a political analyst for NBC.

Nixon's deal was faster, because it isn't everyday one gets to become President without ever being elected to the job and the time factor was critical for Nixon and Ford.

Valerie Plame's name was outed to Bob Novak by Dick Armitage from State. Armitage admitted this to Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald, knowing who did it, continues his investigation and gets someone "caught in a lie". Then prosecutes them for trying to obstruct an investigation in which he KNEW the answer to? Hmmm, this seems fishy to me. I just hope the FBI never has to question me about something they already know the answer to and that if they do I sure hope I can remember who I told what to and when. Would it be fair to say that if Scooter Libby had intentionally lied to investigators about a discount he got on a new car that they could have charged him with perjury? This just sucks...and it scares me....and by the way all you progressives, if a woman has a right to choose an abortion, why don't I have the right to tell the FBI a lie?

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

There are people who feel that Libby should not be punished. It would be another story if we didn't have all these "inconvenient" FACTS with which to base our judgements. However, the facts are there, in plain sight, for all who want to see the truth. Ignorance is exclaiming on a national forum that "...Plame setup Wilsons trip so he could come back and lie about it..." It has been WELL established by ALL investigative branches that Ms. Plame had nothing to do with her husbands trip - nothing at all! Last but not least: to those who still quote the mantra "we're fighting them there so that we don't have to fight them here", I wonder if you are aware that it is now a recognized fact - (even admitted by the President)IRAQ had NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11, nor did IRAQ have ANY ties to Bin Ladens or any other terrorist groups. So am I to believe either A) you are totally uninformed but willing to make yourself look like an idot, or B) you do know the truth but believe it is totally ok to start a war on an unprovoked nation, bomb the hell out of it, kill 3000+ of my brothers and sisters in arms, kill possibly hundreds of thousands of innocent non-combatants, and ruin our great reputation as a nation - all to "possibly" drag a few thousand "terrorists" into a rangefinder so that we can kill them "there"? Obviously I don't believe my little paragraph here will have any effect on those of you who refuse to see the facts or have been too frightened by now to even open your eyes. As a soldier I just feel that I have EARNED the right to speak my mind.

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

Fitzgerald was brilliant I can prove Libby committed perjury beyond a reasonable doubt and thus expose Cheney. without any legal machinations (covert or cover etc)

Chris Matthews reacts to Libby verdict

Why did the CIA ask for an investigation of the outing if Ms Plame was not covert? After reading these opinions...very few facts are actually presented...one thing is clear: the dumbing down of America is progressing at warp speed. Rather than analyze facts for ourselves and come to a conclusion, we prefer to adopt a political agenda from those that we like (either media talking heads or members of Congress...who will say or do anything to get elected). The fact that no-one was "outed" since she was not a covert agent is conveniently forgotten so some can rant about treason and impeachment. The fact that Bush stated in his address that "british intelligence..." has been ignored because it is and was a fact. And we immediately forgive some members of Congress who complained about being "mislead"...were they all asleep during their intelligence briefings, to dumb to understand what they were being told, or just employing selective memory techniques so they can distance themselves from an unpopular war and thus gain personal power? The real lessons from all this are: 1. "Follow the money"...when someone wants to convince you of something, what's in it for them? Money, power, or both? 2. "Don't believe everything you read in the paper or see on TV"...think for yourself, examine whatever facts you can uncover, and reach your own conclusions. Watch both CNN and Fox, you'll get all the opinions from the edges...the truth is somewhere in between. Read both the Washington Post and the Washington Times for the same reason. 3. We no longer have the will to engage in a war, no matter the justification. Wars are ugly things and our military is trained to kill people and break things, not act as good-will ambassadors to whatever country or people who got into trouble. Wars, once begun, are not games with reset, pause, or quit buttons when things are not going our way. Let's not forget that we haven't won a war since WWII because of incessant meddling by those least qualified to manage a military action: members of Congress. And this situation isn't likely to change as long as they can walk out onto the Capitol steps and knowingly lie to us to promote their own agendas...especially since we reward them for this action by re-electing them! 4. We should challenge all those "investigative journalists" who make their living following politics: Determine how members of Congress, no matter the party, always manage to increase their personal wealth while in office even though their pay is barely sufficient to live in the DC area. Now there's a program I'd watch!
